Alexis Nagley Lesson Plan Grade: Kindergarten ELD 375 3-28-13 Rationale: I am teaching this lesson so students get

t better understanding of counting by tens

CORE Standards: K.CC.1-count to 100 by ones and by tens K.CC.2- count forward from a given number within the known sequence. This lesson is important because it introduces the concept of counting by different increments. Objective: Students will be able to count by tens up to one hundred. Lesson Progression: I will introduce the lesson by explaining to the students that when we count we use numbers. As a class we will practice by all counting up to one hundred. After we review, I will engage the students by asking I wonder if there is a different way of counting to get to one hundred? This will engage the students by having them give suggestions of different possibilities of counting to one hundred. This will encourage them to expand their thinking.

This activity fits into the big picture because it allows for constant progression in their math knowledge. I took the skill of counting in sequence they are used to and made it more complex by changing the way they are counting

This lesson is for kindergarten and it is appropriate for the grade because when choosing the activity, I first looked at the Common Core State Standards for kindergarten. While looking through them I chose two standards and made my lesson around them.

In order for me to proceeded, I must see that my students understand the lesson. If they are struggling to the point of frustration, I know I need to find a different way to explain to them how to count, or maybe I am going too fast and need to slow it down for them to understand better. If this is happening I would explain the lesson again or go to the individual students who are really struggling. If our students understand the lesson, I can move to counting by tens starting off at different numbers like twenty and ask them to count by tens starting at that number

I plan to work as a group with the opening activity. Then students will go to their seats to work on a worksheet to practice what we went over and being able to apply with what they learn by themselves or with a partner if needed.

The lesson will close by challenging students to see if they can continue on their worksheet using the same sequence what number they think will come after 100.

Other Considerations: I will use the counting chart to show students visually how many spaces you skip in counting by tens and showing them the pattern. I will also a worksheets for studnets to show they understand the material.

The source of my lesson came from and idea I came up with on my own. It also worked well with the curriculum for this grade.

I will make sure that students use math words during the lesson. I will ask them questions while going through the lesson like. What was you self-talk? this allows students to model orally for their peers the thought process they used to obtain their answer. I will also ask students What pattern did you use? Allowing students there are a variety of ways to achieve the correct answer.

When considering classroom management I will dismiss students from the carpet to their desks by asking students to get up by the color they are wearing. Students desks are also in groups so if they need some help they can talk to their peers.

I expect the lesson to go well. Students should have a smooth transition from counting by one to counting by tens. I will make sure students all have the basic knowledge of counting before transitioning to counting by tens.

Differentiation I will plan differentiation by allowing students show answers by drawing a picture or writing the number out. I will also use the counting chart allowing students to see visually the pattern of counting by tens I will also plan my worksheet to go from easy to harder problems I will give students bonus problems for students who are willing to take the challenge. Students will have the option to work with a partner if they are struggling with the work.

Assessment The assessment is linked to the objective of the lesson because students will be able to successfully count by tens to one hundred. I will specifically see that students were able to do this by having them count by tens individually to me while the other students are working on their worksheet.
