In the year of 1979, revolution was sweeping the streets of Iran.

The citizens of Iran were determined to end the reign of the Shah and take control of their country. The Iranian Revolution was a major turning point in history and would greatly alter Irans position in the world. We initially decided to do Watergate but, decide to change topics because we did not think it would be a good choice for our project. The ramifications and revolutions after Irans still are extant today, as in the Arab Spring. We were awed by the fact that the people were able to come together and overthrow a monarchy that ruled Iran for centuries. We began our research by reading a variety of books that helped us to learn the depth of the revolution and the tension that led to the unrest. Our most important source for images was 44 Days by David Burnett. This incredible source gave the story of an American photojournalist in Iran, and his images were beautiful and graphic windows into the Revolution. Some very valuable sources are our numerous interviews, including numerous refugees and two professors. These interviews helped understand the mood of the people during this time of change. Our interview with Babak Rahimi, Associate Professor of Communication, Culture and Religion at UCSD was probably the most beneficial. He explained to us how Iranian fundamentalism was already around before 1979 but instead was complicated during the revolution. It explained the role of the CIA during the revolution and the aftermath of immediate revolution. We also spoke with a distinguished CIA agent who played an instrumental role in the hostage crisis: Tony Mendez. He talked about the dual nature of Iranians in and out of their country, and what we can do to repair relations with Iran. We chose the medium of a website because it is the perfect blend between text and multimedia. It allows viewers to interact with the material at their own speed. It lets us perfectly integrate text and visual elements. It provides an easy way to separate different events and topics efficiently. To begin our website we began by adding text then slowly started adding visuals to each of our pages. This revolution was a turning point in the Middle East and also in the greater world beyond. It complicated the notion of Islamic jurisprudence, and set a model for other theocracies and other revolutions. Though Persians and Arabs consider themselves radically different, the reverberations of the Iranian Revolution still echo today in such protests as the Arab Spring. Irans revolution could be viewed as a model revolution for generations later. Behind the banner of the Ayatollah, Iran killed relations with the US, with whom they had previously been best of friends. Even today Iran is still something to worry about for American politicians. Obama even said he would do everything to stop Irans nuclear program. He was talking about a country that 30 years before had been nothing in the eyes of the US but a massive oilfield. Irans Islamic Revolution was an amazing example of a turning point, and its effects will doubtless be felt in years to come.
