Number 1 A Coursebook in English pays attention to both the mechanics of English such as those explicit grammar rules and word stress while paying closer attention to the use of English as it occurs amongst various groups of native and non-native speakers of English.
The coursebook aims to develop all four skills, namely, Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing in a connected manner. While doing that, students' motivation and development of their autonomy is given special emphasis. Short readings, controlled writing, matching the verbal to the visual by using many photographs and drawings, putting sentences and dialogues in order, and sentence completion activities characterize the methodology of Number 1 A Coursebook in English. On behalf of 22 writers who have made this coursebook possible, I would like to extend our best wishes to our students and colleagues in their language learning and teaching journey.

Fruits and vegetables have a lot of chemicals. The chemicals in fruits and vegetables are called phytochemicals. Are these chemicals bad for us? No! Not at all. In reality, these chemicals are good for us. The word "Phyto" is a Greek word and it means "plant." So, phytochemicals means "plant chemicals." Why am I talking about this? I think it is important because it explains why we should eat fruits and vegetables. Phytochemicals are very powerful. Fruits and vegetables have vitamins and minerals. Vitamins and minerals help us protect our body from serious diseases.

1. Look at the table on health statistics. What are the obesity rates for the United States, Germany and Turkey? 2. Is obesity a problem in Turkey? Why/ why not? 3. What should we eat to have a healthy body?
About 14% (percent) of people in the world are overweight. These obese people are one big problem of the world because they have an unhealthy life style. They eat food with unhealthy fat. They eat unhealthy food, but do not exercise to burn calories. In the world, children are getting obese, too. The reason for that is so clear! They spend too much time in front of the TV and computer. With no exercise or physical activity, they start getting bio! Unfortunately, they do not go out and play with friends. They play video games, watch TV and eat junk- unhealthy food like potato chips. In the United States, 80 percent of commercials during children's TV programs are for food. In four hours of Sunday morning cartoons, there are nearly 150 advertisements selling iunk food. On the other hand, in Japan and South Korea, the obesity rate is only 3.2%. Especially on the Japanese island of Okinawa, there aren't any overweight people. The Okinawan diet is so low in sugar and salt. So, their food is low in calories. Okinawans eat fruit, vegetables and fish. They usually drink green tea and water. Okinawan people live more than 100 years.
