Form 5 Chapter 4 : Electronics

Definition
A process involving the emission of electrons from a hot metal surface A apparatus to demonstrate thermionic emission, it also allows electrons to flow in one direction An assembly of cathode and anode in a vacuum Minimum energy required to eject electrons from the surface A fine beam of electrons A measuring and testing instrument used in the study of electricity & electronics Materials which allows current to flow through them easily Materials which do not conduct electrical current A material whose resistance is between those of good conductors and those of good insulators Positive charge carriers (a vacancy caused by the leaving of electrons) Negative charge carrier A process of adding a small amount of impurities into the crystalliine lattice of semiconductors to increase their conductivity A semiconductor with holes as the majority charge carrier A semiconductor with electrons as the majority charge carrier A semiconductor made up of a p-type and a n-type semiconductor The bounding region where a p -type meets a n -type semiconductor The potential difference acting from the n-type semiconductor to the p-type semiconductor across the junction The arrangement where the anode end of the semiconductor is connected to the positive terminal and the cathode end is connected to the negative terminal The arrangement where the anode end of the semiconductor is connected to the negative terminal and the cathode end is connected to the positive terminal The conversion of an alternating current into a direct current The process of rectification using a diode which allows current to flow in the half cycle The process of rectification using 4 diodes to allow current to flow in a complete cycle and in the same direction To smoothen the output direct current from a rectifier circuit using a capacitor Consists of a layer of p -type semiconductor sandwiched between two layers of n -type semiconductors Consists of a layer of n -type semiconductor sandwiched between two layers of p -type semiconductors Terminal which supplies charge carriers to Collector terminal Terminal which receives charge carriers from Emitter terminal Controls the flow of charge carriers between Collector and Emitter terminal Current which flows in the base circuit Current which flows in the collector circuit

A resistor where its resistance varies according to light intensity A resistor where its resistance varies according to surrounding temperature A Circuit made up of many components to carry out certain functions Switching circuit that handles high or low signal

Definition
Switching circuit that handles analogue signal Electronic switches with one or more inputs and one output only A table which shows the result of every possible output given every possible input of a logic gate The input is either 1 or 0
