With the help of Analysts Notebooks Social Network Analysis (SNA) features, Kilmarnock Prison intelligence analysts disabled an organized crime ring supporting a high profile prisoner.
Situation
Kilmarnock prison is a 500 cell maximum security prison in Scotland with a maximum capacity of 692 prisoners. With such a large number of prisoners, the inhabitants in this prison function as a small criminal community with organized crime rings and even illegal trafficking of drugs and mobile telephones. When a notorious member of an organized crime group from Glasgow was sent to Kilmarnock, he quickly took advantage of this small community and began organizing a new network to conduct his illegal business from within the prison walls. Shortly after his arrival, the prison officials and analysts noticed an increase of drug and mobile telephone activity and quickly set out to break up his new crime ring. However, this high profile prisoner had experience in leading a national crime group and was well distanced and protected from the illegal activities he conducted in Kilmarnock. Therefore, the prison officials did not have enough evidence to justify segregating the prisoner from the rest of the prison community nor could they find another prison that would be willing to take him. This left the investigators and analysts with the challenge of breaking up his crime ring without touching him.

contact with the head of the network, attribute weight to the more significant players and also begin to monitor how information flowed through the network to the various supporting players. The more information the analysts got from their sources, the clearer the organization of the criminal network became.
Outcome
By leveraging the SNA features of Analysts Notebook, the analysts at Kilmarnock were able to develop a cohesive picture of the organized criminal network and break down the network without having to segregate the head of the network or transfer him to another prison. In addition, the insights gleaned from this investigation and analysis continue to serve the prison officials in a live document, helping them to monitor the networks leader and his relationships, preventing him from reorganizing his network with new players.
Solution
HMP Kilmarnock analysts had always used Analysts Notebook as a briefing tool. However, upon attending an i2 webinar on Social Network Analysis, intelligence analysts at Kilmarnock quickly learned that Analysts Notebook could be an integral asset in breaking up this organized crime network. By leveraging the intelligence gathered from CCTV, other prisoners and the prison staff, the analysts were able to create a visual depiction of the network, highlighting the more important players and downplaying the less significant ones. For instance, by applying Analysts Notebooks SNA capabilities to this information, the analysts were able to determine which players had the most

By applying Analysts Notebooks SNA capabilities, we were able to disrupt an organized crime ring in Kilmarnock and continue to use those techniques to ensure there is no reformation.
