Germantown student wins boys individual bowling title
Main St. Germantown

After finishing near the top at the state bowling championship in previous seasons, Germantowns Tyler Tschetter took home the title this year. Tschetter won the Wisconsin High School Bowling Club State Championship boys single title March 1-3 in competition held in Schofield. Hospitals spring fundraising event offering variety of prizes A $2,000 cash prize and an assortment of $100 gift certificates for 10 of southeastern Wisconsins most notable restaurants are the top prizes in the 2013 Spring Splendor raffles, coordinated by Community Memorial Foundation. Imagination Theatre presenting Barefoot in the Park in April The Imagination Theatre of Germantown will open its sixth season by presenting Barefoot in the Park by Neil Simon. Richfield Lioness Club fashion show fundraiser set for April 18 The Richfield Lioness Club presents Rolling Out the Red Carpet, a fashion show and charity fundraiser, Thursday, April 18 at the Washington County Fair Park-Ziegler Building. The eventwhich will have an Oscar Night feelwill include live and silent auctions, a treasure chest, introduction of the Ultimate Fashion Makeover contest winner, food and beverages and more. Washington County to hold Clean Sweep collection May 11

Washington County will hold its next Full Service Clean Sweep Saturday, May 11, 8 a.m. to noon, at the Washington County Highway Facility, 900 Lang St., West Bend. This is an opportunity for county residents to properly dispose or recycle unwanted hazardous chemicals, electronic goods, pharmaceutical medication and used tires. There will be drive-through collection stations for convenience. A $10 pre-registration fee is required for the hazardous waste and electronic goods; participation is limited to 250 vehicles per event. Pre-registration is not required for the drug collection. The used tire collection is also unlimited; however, a maximum of 20 tires will be accepted per participant, and per tire disposal fees apply. To pre-register, one can download a form from www.co.washington.wi.us/cleansweep; stop in at the Land and Water Conservation Division, 333 E. Washington St., West Bend to submit cash or check; or by calling (262) 335-4808. The following items will not be accepted: television sets, appliances, latex paint, oil, batteries, needles/sharps; radioactive items; smoke detectors; cylinders; and gas grill propane tanks. This is the fourth consecutive year this event has been coordinated by of the Planning and Parks Department, partnering with the health, sheriffs and highway departments.

NOTICE TO MENOMONEE FALLS WATER CUSTOMERS

FLUSHING OF WATER MAINS

The Menomonee Falls Water Utility will be cleaning and flushing water mains from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. beginning April 15th and continuing through May 17th. The flushing will remove most of the natural minerals that have settled in the mains such as iron, a harmless-reddish brown mineral that discolors the water. If you observe the Water Utility personnel working in your area, refrain from using water or use as little as possible for one-half to three-quarters of an hour to insure that the water has settled in the mains. This will also help prevent any iron from being drawn into your water piping system. If you do find that your water has become discolored, refrain from using it for an additional one-half to three-quarters of an hour. Then draw off the remaining discolored water through the COLD WATER FAUCET ONLY. Your cooperation during this flushing procedure will benefit all water customers. Medved wins seat on School Board

Brian Medved won the open seat 4 on the Germantown School Board April 2, defeating Jill North for the post. Medved received 2,726 votes (60.92 percent) while North received 1,739 votes (38.86 percent). Medved will succeed Diana Kline in the post. This is his first election for public office. It was a little surreal when I went in to vote for myself being my first go round, Medved said a day after the election. It feels good, I know there is a lot of work to do and a lot to learn, but I am looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting to work. Medved said the key to the election was getting his conservative message out to voters. I think this was accomplished through friends, family, getting out and talking to voters, as well as newspaper stories and flyers. I had many supporters and it was truly a team effort, I could not have done it without all the help, Medved said. Looking ahead, Medved noted the board has a lot on its plate right now. I will be lending a hand as much as possible and is allowed. I know there is a lot to do and more to learn. I have been doing my homework and will continue to work hard to get up to speed, he said. I have some training to attend, and I will be talking to everyone I can in the district from staff to parents getting the pulse on where we need to go as a community. I have many ideas of my own and will be working hand in hand with the other board members to keep moving the district forward to be the best it can be. Washington County lived up to its reputation as a strong Republican-leaning area. Rep. Don Pridemore received 15,540 votes (66.55 percent) in his bid to become state Superintendent of Public Instruction while incumbent Tony Evers received 7,773 votes (33.29 percent). Evers won the state as a whole with 59 percent of the vote. North cited the countys conservative position as a key to the election. Washington County is the most tax conservative county in the state of Wisconsin. Candidates aligning themselves with that platform win votes in Germantown, she said. Education spending is already capped through revenue caps, thus in reality a moot point. North added that she will continue to be involved with the schools and organizations that serve youth, but is undecided if she will run for the School Board in the future. By Thomas J. Germantown Chamber presents civic awards to notable business, community members

The Germantown Chamber of Commerce announced the 2012 Community Awards winners at its annual dinner and meeting event held March 26 at Nardos Passport Inn in Germantown. The recipients are: Business of the YearHappy Hounds Doggie Daycare & Dog Training: In business for eight years, Happy Hounds was nominated for their participation in events through various organizations and charitable involvement in the community. They were the perfect fit for the award, said Germantown Chamber Executive Director Lynn Grgich. Whether a large or small business, Happy Hounds Doggie Daycare & Dog Training exemplifies the criteria that are looked at in choosing a winner for Business of the Year, she said. Citizen of the YearGermantown Police Chief Peter G. Hoell: Not just anyone can receive this prestigious honor, said Grgich. Qualifying to be Citizen of the Year isnt an award the recipients have aspired to, it comes out of simply seeing things that need to be done and stepping up to the task, she said, noting that Hoell has done exactly that, both in his role as police chief and as a community member. Not only is he a member of several local organizations, but the chief organized the Germantown Civic Group and donates his time to Mai Fest, Relay for Life and various Kiwanis events. In his unique position, he sees a lot that needs to be done, and even outside of those requirements he has stepped up to meet some of those needs, said Grgich. Lifetime Achievement Award winnerJohn Gehl: Gehl, who retired in November 2012 as President and CEO of Gehl Foods, Inc., was the third generation of this family-owned company that has been in Germantown since 1896. In the position since 1963, Gehl deserved this special honor, said Grgich. We did not want this occasion to pass without recognizing his contributions to both the business and the community, she said. The executive director expressed pride and gratitude for the honoreesthis year and in years pastthat have made the village a better place. Each year I am amazed and humbled by the accomplishments and dedication of the recipients, said Grgich. They are not motivated by glory, but by passion.

Local salon owner lends services to cancer patients

A cancer survivor two times over, West Bend resident Barbara Justmanowner of BJ & Company, located at 446 S. Main Street in downtown West Benduses her personal story to be a mentor to others in need, but has a heart for people in general. I just like helping people, whether they be cancer patients or older people, or anyone, Justman said. Hairdressers are like bartenderswe listen to everyones problems. A graduate of the Adele Ballou Cosmetology and in the field for nearly 50 years, Justman is known as a trusted professional in cosmetology and wellness. While she has a special gift for making those going through cancer treatments feel beautiful, Justman offers her extensive services to everyone. BJ & Company offers the full line of beauty products and serviceshaircuts, coloring and styling; wigs, hair pieces and extensions; facials; body waxing; aromatherapy; body wraps; tanning; ear piercing; massages; manicures and pedicures and morehowever, the salons best asset is clearly its owner, who approaches every trial with a wry sense of humor. When diagnosed with colon cancer in 1998, she was running five minutes behind for an appointment with a client. I said, Sorry Im late, I just found out I have cancer, she recalled with a laugh. And when telling the story of how the beauty shop was gutted by a fire in 2009, Justman focuses on the positive, cheerfully explaining how a former employee offered the rental of part of her own building down the street until Justman could re-establish BJ & Company. The fire happened on Monday, we were open for business on Wednesday, said Justman. We didnt skip a beat. Aside from the business she has run since 1979, Justman also donates her aesthetic services to cancer patients, both as a trainer for theLook Good...Feel Better program for the past 22 years and, more recently, at the Small Stones Wellness Center located in the lobby of the Kraemer Cancer Center at Froedtert Health St. Josephs Hospital in West Bend. For Look Good, Feel Bettera free nationwide program for cancer patientsJustman trains other hairdressers in beauty options for women undergoing cancer treatment. We start out by putting makeup and wigs on the model and then everyone follows and does it on themselves, she said. It starts out serious, but pretty soon everyone is having a great time. Justman volunteers two afternoons each week at Small Stones, a new addition to the community that is slowly but surely attracting interest, she said. We can shave heads there, we have some wigs on display and can order wigs, we have make up, she said. People are starting to peek inside and see what were all about. The wellness center also offers books focusing on inspiration, self-help and nutrition, meditation CDs and unique jewelry and gift items. "It makes everything easier, more accessible (for individuals dealing with cancer), she said. This is something Justman can appreciate as nine years after her colon cancer diagnosis, in 2009, for which she underwent chemotherapy, Justman found out she had breast cancer and had to go through radiation. Justman said her difficult experiencesboth personally and with many family members who have faced cancergive her a unique perspective in helping others going through the same struggle. I think people feel more comfortable with me, she said. You live through it and its such a pain, but then you can help people and give them hope. Justmanwho has been married to husband Homer for 47 yearsstays busy and involved in many other ways as well. She is the past chairman and director of the Wisconsin Hair Fashion Committee; has served 30-plus years as an Ambassador for the West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce; and has been a West Bend Rotarian for more than 25 years. But more than anything else she identifies herself as a people person. I like being with people, she said. I feel like I am uplifting to the clients. Were always laughing about something. Fifth grader leads school in raising $800 for hurricane victims

Amy Belle fifth grader Tess Miller is no stranger to personal challenges, so when she saw others in need of a helping hand, she was eager to offer one. The 11-year-old Germantown residentwho underwent several heart surgeries as a toddlerwas spurred into action when she saw the devastation of Hurricane Sandy last fall. I saw on the news how bad it was and how much damage was done, and I felt really bad for all the people there, she said. Because she had been the recipient of so much kindness following her early health issues, Tess decided she would pay it forward and start a fundraiser for the American Red Cross efforts for Sandy victims. When I was little, the Make-A-Wish Foundation made me really happy by giving me a Winne the Pooh bedroom (makeover) and I wanted to do something like that for others, she explained. After discussing a game plan with her parents, Mike and Tracy, Tess created a PowerPoint presentation to get her class involved in her idea for an all-school coin drive. Tess said she got the inspiration from her older sister, Lauren, who had organized a coin drive for the victims of an earlier hurricane. Tess teacher, Liz Diedrich, and Amy Belle Principal Maria Kucharski both really liked the idea, Tess said, so she set the plan in motion. With the drive underway, the entire schoolfor several weeks from November into Decembercollected change in milk jugs in their classrooms, and Tess took careful measure to include all of her classmates. They were excited to do it, she said of her peers. They were really happy for me that I was able to start (the drive). Indeed, classmate Logan Kotke said he had a lot of fun collecting coins with Tess. Each Monday morning throughout the drive, Tess and classmate Hans Stelpflug rallied the school with the total to date, as one of Tess main goals was making the collection a true team effort. I wanted it to be non-competitive, she said. I wanted everyone to work together and help because they wanted to, not just to earn a prize or extra recess. Diedrich said Tess approach of incorporating the whole school community in an act of kindness is typical of the fifth grader. Our entire school is proud of Tess, she said. As an educator, it is always rewarding when, in addition to meeting educational goals, I see a student exhibit a willingness to be of service to others. This is a life goal that will serve Tess well. When all was said and done, a total of $845.36 was raised, and the accomplishment was announced at an all-school assembly as a life-sized check was presented to local Red Cross representatives. Its present and future community members like yourself that makes our organization and the work we do so successful, Mallory Markham of the Red Cross wrote in a thank you card to Tess. The girl also received accolades from Sen. Alberta Darling who stated, It is inspiring to see such generosity and kindness from

the members of the community. Tess mother said her daughters most recent actions were noble, but not all that surprising. Tess has gone through more in her life than the average 11-year-old, but instead of complaining that life isnt fair, she continuously focuses on the positive and finds ways to make a difference in the lives of others, Tracy Miller said. Tesswho also organizes teams for the Make-A-Wish Foundations annual run/walk, regularly participates in the Briggs & Als Run and Walk for Childrens Hospital and serves in her schools K-Kids student leadership programplans to continue using her servants heart to benefit more people in the future. It makes me feel good that we helped (the Sandy victims) out, she said. Its really fun to help people.

Germantown HS grad receives Academic All-America honor

Ben Averkamp (Germantown, Wis./Germantown), a senior forward on the Loyola University (Chicago) mens basketball team, has been named Capital One Second Team Academic All-America earlier this year. Averkamp is just the eighth Loyola individual, and the first-ever member of the mens basketball program, to garner Capital One Academic All-America accolades. Averkamp was joined on the Capital One Academic All-America Second Team by Matthew Dellavedova (Gonzaga), Nathan Healy (Appalachian State), Peyton Siva (Louisville), and Andrew Smith (Butler). Aaron Craft (Ohio State), Kelly Olynyk (Gonzaga), Mason Plumlee (Duke), Matthew Sullivan (Brown), and Cody Zeller (Indiana) comprised the first team. As a junior in 2011-12, Averkamp collected Second Team All-Horizon League honors to become the first Loyola player since 2007 to be a first or second team allconference pick after putting up 15.4 points per game and 7.1 rebounds per game, both career-best averages. The biology major is a two-time Capital One First Team Academic All-District V selection (2012, 2013), and also has been named to the Horizon League Mens Basketball All-Academic Team (2011, 2012), I-AAA Mens Basketball ScholarAthlete Team (2012), National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court (2012), National Jesuit Mens Basketball AllAcademic Team (2012), and Horizon League Academic Honor Roll (2010, 2011, 2012). During his career, the 6-foot-8 forward has been a four-time Horizon League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Month honoree and in addition to being a member of Loyolas Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), he is also the president of the Horizon League chapter of SAAC.

The golf team has made it to the National Meet due to winning their conference meet, which is to played in May in Florida. Stapelman swam the 500 yard freestyle, 100 and 200 yard fly. She placed 16th at the conference meet in the 100 butterfly. Scenic Run & Walk set for April 20

The 5th Annual Scenic Run & Walka 2 Mile Walk or 5 Mile Runwill be held on Saturday, April 20 in downtown Hubertus. Races begin at St. Gabriel School, 3733 Hubertus Rd., Hubertus, at 9 a.m. There is a special family rate of $60. Proceeds support the education programs of St. Gabriel Parish.
