PREFACE
Dowry is a pernicious system of evil which must be wiped out from the society sooner than later. How many girls are killed, how many are maimed or how many are forced to return to their parental homes every day is nobodys guess. Of course, we get some statistics of violence from the National Crime Bureau. But do those figures give a true picture? No, because those are based upon reported crimes. But the funniest part of this issue is, dowry has been prohibited by law in India, and prohibited not with effect from yesterday, but from 1960s. Even before that, i.e. when Mahatma Gandhi was alive, he had spoken strongly against dowry, child marriage and such social evils. In fact, Gandhiji had laid down his law that the expenses of a marriage shall not cross the limit of Rs. 5/-How many takers are there even among the so called Gandhians for the piece of advice the Mahatma had given? Now-a-days, there is a competition to exhibit pomp and show in connection with marriages. This mostly affects the poor people because out of false prestige, they too want to spend lavishly and convince others of their worth, but have no cash in hand or in bank and hence they go for loans. And you are ruined once you take a loan. So the society must advert back to the views expressed by Gandhiji and others in the past and a few others including some individuals and youth/women organizations in the present. It is also to be noted that laws alone cannot cure the social maladies. There has to be a strong campaign for creating awareness among people and the campaign must be conducted in such a way as to sway the public opinion in favour of the slogans raised. With these words, we too join others in the campaign to end the social evils including the evil system of dowry.
