The State of the State: 2013 Legislative Season a Busy One
Vermonts 2013 legislative season is in
full-swing in Montpelier; the Bennington
Free Press caught up with State Repre-
sentative Brian Campion, who represents
Bennington and North Bennington in
VT House District 2-1. Representative
Campion is also a Bennington College
employee.
On Thursday, the Vermont House of
Representatives passed a $173 million
spending bill in what Representative
Campion called an overwhelming roll-
call vote. Everyone that was actually in
their seat and voted, voted for it nobody
voted against it, Campion said. The bill
contains $69 million in spending related to
the ongoing recovery from Tropical Storm
Irene and includes allocations to rebuild
both the Waterbury State Offce Complex
and the Vermont State Hospital, both of
which were effectively destroyed during
the fooding which followed Hurricane
Irene in 2011. The bill is a close match
with Governor Shumlins budget proposal
and is expected to pass the Senate with
little diffculty. The State is still negotiat-
ing with FEMA on the exact compensation
it will receive to fund some of the Irene-
related projects; the States $69 million
spending fgure is technically a placehold-
er, but accounts for $56 million the State
believes FEMA and insurance agencies
owe for Irene-related damages.
On the revenue side, the House has
also passed an $0.08 increase in gas taxes
through the Transportation Committee, as
well as a $0.50 tax increase on packs of
cigarettes through the Ways and Means
Committee. The gas tax was not passed
without controversy, Campion noted, but
said that Vermonts roads need a real
infusion of cash and work. Both the ciga-
rette and gas tax bills are awaiting senate
approval.
Representative Campion made waves
in the House Education Committee re-
cently by questioning the constitutionality
of how Vermont pays for private pre-K
education in school districts that do not
offer it. The Vermont Department of Edu-
cation does not track which private pre-K
programs actually receive public funding,
and the DoE has admitted it is possible
that some of the money has been going
to religious institutions. Whats happen-
ing is that [pre-K providers] are renting
spaces from religious organizations, and
that money is going towards messaging
and clergy, Campion says. He offered
that the arrangement is problematic even
if the money in question isnt being fun-
neled directly into religious programming.
'It`s not unlike somebody who`s going to
rent a classroom at Bennington College
all that money is going into different
Y NIKE GCIDIN 'T4
funds, it gets lost in the shuffe. Even
if the money doesnt go directly towards
messaging, its going towards mainte-
nance, and that frees up other funds for
whatever else. Campion asserts that the
practice is a clear violation of Church
and State.
Campion pushed to add language to
the Committees pre-K education bill
which would prevent the possibility of
these kinds of things happening in the
future, and the House Judiciary Com-
mittee bolstered those additions. House
Judiciary actually strengthened that piece
of the bill by emphasizing that not only do
people have to interpret the State constitu-
tion, they also have to take into consid-
eration the US Constitution. The reason
the [Judiciary] Committee pushed for that
is because at one time or another, one of
these constitutions could be weakened,
and so the stronger one will prevail.
The Education Committee is also work-
ing to pass its miscellaneous education
bill, which has drawn scrutiny for its
inclusion of language that would prevent
independent schools from replacing public
schools in Vermont; the bill is traditionally
used to make minor corrections to existing
legislation. In regards to the bills implica-
tions for the Village School of North Ben-
nington, Representative Campion is con-
fdent that the bill 'is not going to effect
North Bennington [.] North Bennington
is still going to be absolutely fne.

CLASSIC FILM SERIES
Departing Director of Field Work Term Tammy Fraser: Interview
Tammy Fraser, Director of FWT at the
College, announced last month that she
will be leaving Bennington on April 30th.
The BFP interviewed her about her time at
the school.
BFP: How did you come to fnd this job at
Bennington?
Tammy: I was working at Vassar College
at the time and my husband was work-
ing at Albany. We were both commuting
about an hour, so I needed to fnd some-
thing with a shorter commute. I actually
saw an ad in the paper, believe it or not,
and decided to apply, and I started in May
oI 2004.
BFP: How was FWT diIIerent when you
started?
Tammy: The program itselI was similar
in that students Iound their own jobs,
completed essays and evaluations. Ev-
erything else was on paper, which really
surprised me. The frst year I was here
there were all diIIerent colored Iorms Ior
everything a pink Iorm Ior registration
oI housing, a blue Iorm Ior grants - ev-
erything. The computer system was this
old access database on the intranet, so you
could only access it at Bennington. There
were binders in the oIfce Iull oI sites, so
people would come in and look through
all the papers to fnd jobs. The processes
were very diIIerent, and there was no
primary or supplementary hours, it was all
just one job. There was also no summer
deIerral. Everything just had to happen in
the winter.
BFP: What were your thoughts on FWT
coming in Irom outside Bennington?
Tammy: I was really excited about it,
because I worked with career develop-
ment beIore I came here, and one oI the
biggest challenges in career development
is getting students involved in the work-
Iorce beIore the spring semester oI their
senior year. This seemed like a really
good way to get students to think about
the next step. I don't think there's a diIIer-
ence between the 'college world and the
'real world - it's all real. I see the value
oI students working oII campus or having
summer jobs, etc. There are students who
aren't necessarily successIul in school who
oIten shine in applied learning. It's a re-
ally nice thing to go hand in hand and can
really boost someone's confdence.
BFP: What was the hardest thing about
the job?
Tammy: Then, I think it was just deal-
ing with the paperwork. Now, I think a
challenge is just looking at what FWT's
role can be at the College, and to really
fnd ways to better integrate it into the
plan process. Sometimes it Ieels like it's
not as integrated as it could be. Things are
sort oI geared by calendar, which makes
it really hard. The challenge is knowing
that not everything we do is eIIective Ior
student learning. We are bound by certain
constraints, but I don't know how to over-
come that.
BFP: There's a consensus with at least
some oI the students here that while FWT
is a great idea theoretically, the rest oI the
Y TENAkA CAIEN 'T5
world just doesn't operate on Bennington's
calendar. What are your thoughts on that?
Tammy: I absolutely agree. I would love
to see and again, this is a calendar chal-
lenge FWT be longer. I think that would
be great Ior students and Ior sites. In all
honesty, I wish more people had taken
advantage oI the summer deIerral option
when you do have a bigger period oI time.
Maybe that'll be something that could
be more institutionalized in the Iuture. I
think those are real legitimate concerns.
It's a question worth looking into: what is
so sacred about winter?
BFP: What was your Iavorite part oI the
job?
Tammy: I love working with students, I
really do. I love it when students come
in questioning. People think that they're
complaining, but I love it when people
contact me to question the late Iee, and I
explain: alright, this is why. Do you have
suggestions Ior a better way to do it? I
Iound that 90 oI the students here are
just Iantastic and the 10 here that are
challenging, that'll all wash out in the end
too. I'm sure there are plenty oI people
here who fnd me to be challenging too,
and that's okay! That happens in the
world. But the student involvement at any
college, but especially Bennington that's
what I love the most.

BFP Updating Management Structure in Fall 2013
The recent drug busts in the town of Ben-
nington were not this winters only scan-
dal: police are currently investigating an
alleged prostitution ring that could include
up to six women. Search warrants and an
affdavit, fled by the police in December,
were released in February after being re-
quested by reporters at the Bennington
Banner.
The documents include a transcript of
a Facebook chat between Jennifer Onora-
to, 31, a Bennington resident, and Jason
Balsh - a fgure local police believe to be
a fctional alias. The transcript suggests
that Balsh used his account to solicit
various local women to perform sex acts in
exchange for money or drugs, often crack
cocaine. He also encouraged his contacts to
recruit other women, offering to pay back a
portion of the new recruits earnings.
One of the search warrants released to
the public was served on January 21 at
the home of Thomas Lyons, the owner of
Bennington Subaru. Lyons had been un-
der investigation for involvement with the
prostitution ring since early January: police
believe he is behind the Jason Balsh alias.
Audio recordings of an interview be-
tween police and Kayla Foucher, 23, an
alleged prostitute linked to the ongoing
investigation, were also released. In the
interview, Foucher names six male clients
and at least fve other women also involved
in the ring. In a separate interview with the
Bennington Banner, Foucher names the
owner of Foster`s Cannery, Preston Foster,
50, as one of the men with whom she ex-
changed sex for money and drugs.
Onarato, Foucher, and Lyons have not
been charged with any crimes, and Foster
has pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor
of soliciting a prostitute. Investigations
into other potential offenders are ongoing.

Beginning next term, the Bennington
Free Press will be undergoing a number
of important changes. Currently, we are
seeking applicants for several staff edi-
tor positions that will be vacant in the
Spring. We will also be reconfguring our
staff model, and adding entirely new paid
editorial positions. We are now looking
for people interested in managing Cam-
pus News, Local News, Arts, and Student
Life. This new structure is being imple-
mented in preparation for the Bennington
Free Press`s complete transition from
a print paper to an online paper, which
is slated to take place in the Spring of
2014. Discontinuing the production of a
print paper will allow the BFP to, among
many other things, conserve resources, and
expand content to include digital media.
Our budget is currently under review, but
hopefully this transition will allow us to
reallocate printing funds to compensate the
hardworking staff and writers that make
the survival of this paper possible. Many
of our regular writers will be graduating
in May as well, and we encourage anyone
who is interested in contributing content to
the BFP to be in contact with us. If you
would like to become involved with the
BFP in any of the abovementioned capaci-
ties, or if you have comments, suggestions,
or questions about this transition, e-mail
us at bfpeditors@gmail.com or talk to us
in person at our next writers meeting (the
date and location of which will be posted
on our Facebook page). The next few
years are going to be a pivotal time in the
history of Bennington College, and it will
be more important than ever for students to
keep themselves informed. We encourage
you to become part of the ongoing effort to
make this paper a powerful vehicle for the
voice of the student body of this college.
Krista Thorp was the costumer for this pro-
duction.
This term`s student production, Vinegar
Tom, directed by seniors Abby
Beggs and Eric Marlin, will open
this weekend.
The show is by Caryl Churchill
and set in 17th century England. It
follows the story of a community
in their daily struggles, which,
upon the entrance of a famous
witch hunter, quickly become
blamed on the poor women in the
town. The show includes interrup-
tions in the form of songs. The
interesting thing about this play is
that we get our naturalistic scenes
about witch trials in the 17th cen-
tury, and they`re interspersed with
songs that function as very sharp
feminist commentary thats set in
the contemporary time. One of
the biggest questions that always
comes up with anyone who does
this play is that they always want
to cut the songs, because they feel
like they aren`t necessary, they
feel they`re too pointed, too ob-
vious, too bitchy, Marlin said.
However, Beggs, Marlin, and the
original composer feel it is impor-
tant to force people to draw the
connection.
The play consists of seven
women (Laura Miller, 16, Cathe-
rine Weingarten, 14, Erica Baffa,
13, and Isabel Miller, 15, Kim
Kirchner, `13, Maia Villa, 15 and
Caitlin Brzezinski 14) and two
men (Patrick Harnett-Marshall,
`16 and Rory Cullen, `15). This is different
than the usual gender ratio for plays. Since
Angels in America in the Fall of 2011,
theres been a move towards casts that are
more evenly distributed or that have more
female actresses. The student production
from last term, Dead Man`s Cell Phone,
had a similar makeup, with two men and
four women. One thing that really pisses
me off, said Beggs, 'and I`m not rag-
ging on the theater department here, this is
about the theater world in general, is that
there are a lot of plays out there with a lot
of men in them and not a lot of women,
even though the ratio on this campus is
30% men and 70% women, [.] so [choos-
ing a show with more women] was a con-
scious decision for Eric and I.
Many of Churchills plays have a femi-
nist slant, and Vinegar Tom is no excep-
tion. It was created with the British theater
company Monstrous Regiment in 1976,
and deals specifcally with the problems
presented to women at the start of the
womens rights movement during the sev-
enties. The sad part about this play is that
it was written forty years ago and its still
relevant today, and this is when the second
wave of feminism was going on. Churchill
was a radical Marx-
ist feminist, and the
fact that the things
a radical Marxist
feminist was say-
ing in the 1970`s
are still relevant
today is really sad,
said Beggs. The
play pulls text not
only from the script
and songs cre-
ated by Churchill
and the Monstrous
Regiment, but also
from the Maleus
Malefcarum, a
1486 book on the
systematic perse-
cution of witches
written by Harold
Kramer and James
Sprenger. The title
comes from a fa-
mous woodcut of
esteemed witch
hunter Matthew
Hopkins, who fnds
the names of old
womens famil-
iars.
Vinegar Tom will
be performed this
Friday and Satur-
day, April 5th and
6th, at 8:00 PM in
Margot Tenney. The
creative team includes Abby Beggs and
Eric Marlin, with stage management by
Rebecca Warzer and Kelly Nichols-Hoppe,
set design by Ashley Connell, lighting by
Ranleigh Starling and Brady Williams,
and costume design by Krista Thorp. The
music was composed by Abby Beggs. For

How Does Advanced Work... Work?
Y KkI5TA THCkP 'T5
Its that time of year again. Seniors
are but 57 days away from graduation
at the publication of this article (sorry
guys) and juniors have just turned in their
plan confrmations. About ffty percent
of the school has been plunged into the
end result of the plan process: the ever
mysterious advanced work.
The Plan Process document distributed
by the college defnes Advanced Work as
the realization of work in one or more
areas of study that moves well beyond
the introductory level and demonstrates
a broadly formed understanding of your
stated areas of study and their connection
to your educational goals. While this
functions as a conceptual defnition, no
actual procedural guidelines are outlined
in the document. In fact, the section that
elaborates on how students can build their
advanced work seems to be deliberately
vague: 'Generally, the document reads,
each students work will be assessed
in relation to how successfully she
has realized the Expectations of a
Bennington Education [] Beyond
these expectations, each discipline may
have additional methods of assessment
and/or opportunities for engagement
within that particular community of
inquiry. This may include a review
process, performances, thesis work,
lecture series, colloquia, and more.
It is the students job to discuss and
clarify with their faculty advisors
how to do advanced work across
disciplines, and the only responsibility
of the plan committee is to provide
guidance. Ideally this would mean
that students have the freedom to work
independently and create the kind of
project they want to. However, it can
also give the plan committee enough
power to stop the student from doing a
project that they don`t agree on. While,
hopefully, by their sixth term, students
trust those three or four faculty
members with their lives, they are
still given complete veto power over
anything the student may want to do.
Provided a students plan and advanced
work proposal is passed during sixth
term, the plan committee can call a
seventh-term plan meeting (which
happens only in unusual circumstances,
the document points out) if the work that
the student is doing is not acceptably
advanced. The document lacks a list of
requirements or traits that might defne
something as 'acceptably advanced,
and interpretation is left entirely up to
the plan committee. Faculty work from
the same document and one additional
set of guidelines, a one page document
titled Expectations of a Bennington
Education. It has two vague points
about senior work; by the time a student
graduates, their 'skills can be applied in
multiple contexts, and are 'expect[ed..
to] explore this breadth of application in
sophisticated and integrative ways. The
document also says that By the time
they graduate, students should be able
to employ these skills individually and
collaboratively, demonstrating a capacity
to act creatively and effectively. While
this perhaps implies some requirements
about advanced work, specifcs are
explicitly left out.
Theoretically, all of this seems very
progressive and in line with the idea of a
Bennington educationit functions on the
same building block that every system at
this school depends on: the conversation.
While these 'conversations that are
so integral to the way students provide
input to the school can be useful for
brainstorming and getting ideas fowing,
they have their drawbacksnobody is
held accountable for the information that
is given and nobody is required to give
any specifc information or answer any
specifc questions. They are far from an
ideal form to address the questions that
students simply cannot answer themselves
about their advanced work. When is my
plan progress essay due? What are my
options? What projects am I working
on right now that I can get credit for as
advanced work?
It is also important to note that not
all disciplines are created equal. The
avenues through which one can pursue
advanced work are signifcantly clearer
in some disciplines than others. For
instance, Visual Arts has four classes
titled 'Advanced, Dance has two
projects classes, and music has two.
Last term a Literature projects class was
taught. Special Projects, a class taught
this term by Eileen Scully, covers all the
social sciences, though it was originally
intended to deal only with history. Drama
has a number of avenues for completing
advanced work, but those that give credit
are very exclusive and can only serve a
few students at a time (directing a student
production during senior year, serving
some role in the faculty production) or
only come around every so often (like
Sitcom, or Directing II). Students who
wish to create a production for their senior
work are, more often than not, unable to
get credit unless they are selected for the
few aforementioned opportunities. While
science does not have an abundance of
projects classes, they recently held a
Science Workshop about how to complete
advanced work in the sciences, and the
path seems very clear. In terms of the
science faculty communicating with
science students, a lot of that happened
during ffth term seminar, said Joseph
Kendrick, a sixth-term science student.
Kendrick was away last term so he did
not take ffth term seminar, and through
being proactive and asking often about his
senior work (a project supervised by long
term faculty member Kerry Woods), he is
having a fne time starting. An anonymous
science student who took ffth term
seminar has a different point of view. I
keep hearing conficting things about what
advanced work is from the same person,
I keep hearing that it doesnt have to be
new, cutting edge work that is pushing
the boundaries of science, and then they
also tell me on my proposal that its been
done before and I cant do it. They say I
have to improve it, but they don`t explain
how to improve it, he said. His project
advisors are both new faculty members,
and he says that it`s clear that they, and his
faculty advisor, who does not work in his
discipline, are not working from a shared
set of criteria. Luke Dowling, a senior,
has had a similar issue. He said that it
did not at all seem as if the two faculty
members advising him had a consistent
idea of what advanced work should be.
Especially because theres a visiting
faculty member who doesnt know any
of the criteria, he said. Dowling also
said that, though there haven`t been any
issues, the two faculty members advising
him have had differing opinions on what
his advanced work should look like.
In an email interview, Associate Dean
of the College Duncan Dobbleman said
As you can imagine, advanced work can
take a range of forms, depending on the
student`s Plan, so it is very diffcult-
and generally undesirableto prescribe
as a fxed set of specifc criteria that
students in a given area must adhere to,
While discipline faculty regularly meet
to discuss advanced work procedures
and requirements, there is no 'offcial
criteria or guidelines as to what senior
work needs to be. I should add that Im
not suggesting that we dont need more
clarity, Dobbleman said.
This fexibility should allow for students
to work on projects that are self-generated
and inspiring to them. However, that is not
always the case. Sofe Sherman-Burton, a
December graduate in the class of 2012,
spent much of her time here leading,
with Bryan Markhart, the creation of the
Bennington Sustainable Food Project as
we know it today. Soon after completing
a garden internship after her frst term,
she began thinking about her work on
the food project, the farm, and the co-
op as something that might turn into an
advanced work project. 'As I was listening
to campus community members talk about
CAPA and its intentions and melding those
with my understanding of Bennington
culture, I started to think that the best
realization of my time and projects at
Bennington was a real, living project that
was trying to do something great for the
community. Sherman-Burton worked on
the project her entire time at Bennington,
but was unable to use that as an advanced
work opportunity. 'What would have been
wonderful about the opportunity to focus
my senior work on the BSFPs various
endeavors would have been to do those
things more vigorously and to devote even
more time and energy to them. And also
just to have everything that I was doing,
the practicality and real-ness of what I was
doing validated, realized in the same way
that I think other students projects are.
The other students Sherman-Burton
is referring to are students mainly in the
visual and performing arts, who create
performances or pieces in their discipline,
usually in advanced classes or projects
classes for credit. Sherman-Burton,
however, never received any credits for her
work on the BSFP, although she said that,
realistically, it often took priority over
her academic work, often in the form
of the practical application of ideas she
learned about in her classes, mainly in
environmental studies.
This brings up the issue of students
in all years that complete something
that might, in another context, be
considered 'advanced work, but is
done for no credit and outside of class.
Tonight, in fact, the student production
that goes up each term will premiere,
and the actors as well as much of the
production crew are underclassmen.
Only the directors, who are two of
three senior drama students who will
get class credit for an individual project
this year, have the production as a
supervised tutorial.
There are some activities that
students see as being part of their plan,
but are paid jobs rather than something
that students receive class credit for,
such as Sherman-Burtons summer
farm internship. Most of these jobs,
however, function at the same time that
classes are in session, and therefore
can often take away from the classes
that are evaluated by professors and
show up on transcripts. However, these
students often consider their work at these
jobs part of their classes. As someone who
has recently gained an interest in journalism
and media studies, the BFP has been a very
useful tool in exploring that newfound
fascination, said Celene Barrera, voices
editor of the BFP, 'It is rather unfortunate
that I cannot receive credit for this very
much academic endeavor.
The fact that individual projects make
up a signifcant amount of work for some
students and not others does not have to be
a complaint about being busy or having an
unreasonable amount to do. Those asked
to do more also have more opportunities
than others. Because advanced work can
mean anything from taking an advanced
class to creating or collaborating on a
complex original project, some students
graduate with experience leading a public
action group, putting on a show, or creating
a newspaper. Students who dont seek
out or do not, by chance, discover those
opportunities, graduate having done less
practical work than others, which isn`t
fair for them. The lack of clear pathways
towards completing individual projects,
not only for credit but with the support of
the faculty, creates an unequal distribution
of the type of education that Bennington
professes to offer.

Bennington, these nights, has a provincial
meanness that only bright lights expose.
After dark, she is like a governess gone to
the bad, all tarted up in a Woolworth tiara.
A man and a woman stood talking against a
lamppost. In this pre-spring cold snap they
had chosen to make a long summerlike
pause, hesitating like ghosts with no beat,
like conspirators. What to do?
Dandelion and Burdock, Cloudy
Lemonade, Bitter Shandy. Are these A)
English codenames for various intelligence
projects throughout the Cold War; B)
nicknames of football clubs; or C) favors
of soda available at Lil Britain Fish and
Chip Shop (116 North Street, Bennington)?
Everyone has a story, an incident about
the war. The minesweepers on the lake. The
hundreds of barrels of paint in a burning
warehouse going up like rockets. The
woman with her skirt blown off staggering
down Pleasant Street in her suspenders. At
the close of these reddened evenings one
especially trembles, feels the proximal
dark. The answer is C.
A spot of something? she asked.
We struck our boots to the lino foor like
matches, bones alight with what seemed
the onset of spring, a break in the bombing.
Dennis Rodman was making an appearance
on the television with Kim Jong-un, but the
set was muted, there was only the sound
of BBC1 coming in over the radio. Cans
of Heinz spotted dick and baked beans.
Raisin-flled candy bars. Bisto, 'the
Nations favourite gravy. Could Rodman
diplomacy really work? We were skeptical.
Fish and chips ($7.75) comes with a side
of pickled beets, a roll with butter, gravy,
coleslaw or mushy peas. Expensive for a
simple beige meal, but war rationing has
the best of everyone. $10 for a large, but
who can justify that. The choice between
tartar and cocktail sauce is a false one - get
both, they make the meal. Consider the chip
butty ($4.00), because one does not come
into these shops to lounge, and maybe
one only really even needs a Freedom fry
sandwich these days.
I am thirsty, she said. The tea was
served in Styrofoam but good. A bomb fell
somewhere across the middle distance and
we looked pensively at our dishes.
She ordered the vegetable curry pie
($5.50), an item not on the menu, and
perhaps for good reason. Irritably hot and
lacking in spices. How many thousands of
men lost their lives in the Merchant Navy

to the sodas. The fowery fzz of Dandelion

curious to try the other varieties.
The telephone rang as we mulled over
the last scraps of pie and fsh. The staid,
inexorable woman at the counter briefy
lifted her eyes to me before turning back to
her hands. I wiped a spot of batter from my
chin before making my way to the booth
and picking up the receiver.
Yes no, its all there yes... might be
worse...bye.
I left the booth and she already had a
cigarette in her mouth. I think the raids
over, she said. In that case

Dr. von Doin'it - What are the hawt new
pubic hairstyles for the 2013 spring/
summer season?
Love,
-Hirsute Harriet
Im oh so very glad you brought this up
because I am actually trimming mine as
I type these words! Essentially, anything
you can do to a mustache, you can do to
a puss-stache. And please be very creative
with that. That means you can go with a
curly-cue handlebar, an upside-down soul
patch, maybe even some mutton-chops if
your inner thighs are furry enough. What
I am currently working on in my personal
bush is a classic fu-manchu, but that would
not look good on just any genital. So I
guess what I am saying is go with your
general genital shape and composition.
Complexion and color are things to think
about too. Maybe some bleach? Is that
safe? Try it and let me know. Is your pubic
hair light enough to dye pink or green?
Red white and blue? Also consider new
and innovative shapes: a heart, a smiley
face, if youre really talented you can make
another vagina on top of your regular one.
Needless to say, traditional landing strips
are so last century. You could take a tip
from that kid I saw in the dining hall last
term with a reverse mohawk and do what
Moses did to the Red Sea, but with a little
skinny nosehair trimmer and your carpet.
If you wanna be really economical about it
try this whacky idea: use the trimmings in
french tips on your nails when youre done!
Textured nail polish is so in right now. So
youve got lots of options, and feel free to
email some pictures to all your friends. But
whatever you do dont try to google image
search mustaches on pubes or pube
mustache, because I just tried that and got
nothin.

Dear Hermione,
I have no idea. Maybe it can be if you light

Dr von Doin'it,
Do you think a long distance relationship
is worth the trouble?
Long distance relationships, like
everything else, have their goods and their
bads and ultimately it comes down to what
you and your partner are willing tolerate.
The bad parts speak for themselves: No
kissing, cuddling, holding hands, cutting
each others hair or doing the nasty all
the time. Maybe once every other week if
youre lucky. This is especially tough for
those who fnd themselves in monogamous
long-distance relationships. But the good
thing, maybe the only good thing, is that
it tests your strength as a couple. Why stay
with someone when your relationship is
basically functioning on text messages,
instagram, phone tag and the occasional
skype sex? Youre obviously not together
for geographical reasons, so why? I hope
that in your case the answer is love,
because as cheesy as it sounds, theres no
other logical reason to stay together. Not
to say that love is logical, but thats beside
the point. In my experience, the long-
distance thing doesnt work unless theres
hope for both people to be living in the
same general location in the near future,
but thats not to say that ongoing long-
distance relationships dont exist. Either
way, summer is only half a term away (the
faster half) and our winter break is almost 3
months long. It takes planning and when
you start planning to live around another
person, it makes you think about how
important they are to you. Long-distance
relationships are very rare in the animal
kingdom because the sacrifces that human
beings are willing to make to sustain them
are simply not options for most animals.
We are capable of being with another
person who isnt around, but still many
relationships dont pass that test because
the choice for a long distance mate, in a
biological way, is an unnatural one. So
basically dont be a nerd asking me if your
relationship is worth it because how the
hell should I know?
If you have a question for Dr. von Doin'
It, leave it in the drop envelope in the
Commons mailroom.

After the tragic shootings last
December in Newtown, Connecticut,
there have been increased calls for tighter
regulations on the sale and distribution
of frearms. While some of the suggested
measures are more controversial and
others more politically feasible, requiring
universal background checksor, at least,
increased background checksfor gun
sales is a common sense approach that
would increase our ability as a society to
keep dangerous, military-grade weapons
out of the hands of those who should not
enjoy an unlimited right to bear arms.
While the Second Amendment
guarantees the right of the people to
keep and bear Arms, we obviously have
to draw a line somewhere if we hope to
avoid a Warriors-esque, Hobbesian state
of nature in which every man, woman
and child double-fsts assault rifes. We
must respect the rights given to us by our
Constitution, but must also ensure that
society is kept safe from gun violence.
A universal background check
is the best way to ensure the safe and
responsible selling of guns. The bill that
the Senate is currently considering would
expand the requirement of background
checks to all advertised gun sales, including
those posted on the Internet, and would
also make checks mandatory at gun shows.
Today, only 60% of gun salesthose
conducted by federally licensed frearms
dealersare subject to background checks,
and the remaining 40%, typically sold at
gun shows, do not require such measures.
The Senate bill would expand oversight
dramatically.
However, it is important to note
that the bill would still fall short of a
universal background check requirement.
The expanded gun control laws would not
cover unadvertised, person-to-person gun
sales, transfers within families, or clearly
temporary transfers. But I`d gladly take
increased checks over the status quo.
Under the Gun Control Act of
1968, it is illegal for anyone meeting
the following descriptions to purchase
a gun: [Anyone] under indictment or
information in any court for a crime
punishable by imprisonment for a term
exceeding one year; convicted of a crime
punishable by imprisonment for a term
exceeding one year; who is a fugitive
from justice; who is an unlawful user of
or addicted to any controlled substance;
who has been adjudicated as a mental
defective or has been committed to any
mental institution; who is an illegal alien;
who has been discharged from the military
under dishonorable conditions; who
has renounced his or her United States
citizenship; who is subject to a court order
restraining the person from harassing,
stalking, or threatening an intimate partner
or child of the intimate partner; or who has
been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of
domestic violence.
Is it crazy to work harder to make
these individuals unable to legally purchase
frearms? After deciding as a society that
people ftting the above description are
unft to ship, transport, receive, or possess
frearms, it seems reasonable that we
actually restrict their legal commercial
interactions with dangerous weapons.
The question here is whether
the right to bear arms should really be
as sacrosanct as the NRA wants it to be.
If the Second Amendment upholds that
right in order to support a well regulated
Militia, maybe we should consider what
elements of society would detract from
one. Rapists, felons, domestic abusers, and
the violently insane would probably not
contribute to such a militia, so we must
question whether their right to buy and
hold weapons overrides their victims right
to peace, happiness, and life.
More than 90% of Americans
support the expansion of background
checks to all gun sales, because they know
that it will limit the movement of guns into
the hands of criminals. Both houses of
Congress should heed public opinion and
reason, and move to expand this common
sense rule as soon as possible. I hope
that Congress acts strongly and swiftly to
pass measures that will make it harder for
potentially violent individuals to possess
frearms. And I understand that it is not
so easy to determine who is potentially
violent. All the same, more background
checks will keep weapons out of the hands
of many who would misuse them. They
will make life safer for many people.
Let me be clear: an expansion of
the background check will not eradicate
gun violence. Violent criminals who try
to access frearms may still succeed, but
they will not do so as easily if all legal
gun purchases are subject to a background
check. The goal should be the restriction
of gun purchases and ownership by those
who will use frearms for violence, without
infringing on the right of law-abiding
citizens to buy and bear arms. If you don`t
break laws and arent of defective mental
constitution, background checks will not
limit your right to lawful gun ownership.
For the last month, people all
over the country have been watching and
voicing their opinions on the trial and
outcome of the Steubenville rape case.
The case concerns a sixteen-year-old girl
in Steubenville, Ohio who was raped
last summer by two high school football
players, Trent Mays and Malik Richmond,
who were also both sixteen at the time. I
wont go into detail, but needless to say,
the act was abusive and violating, and the
two boys were found guilty of rape on
March 17. Among the charges brought
against them was digital penetration,
which, under Ohio law, constitutes rape -
both were sentenced to time in a juvenile
detention center, one for two years, the
other for one. Besides the horrifying fact
that a young girl was attacked by her peers,
the case has brought to the surface intense
attitudes about rape culture, rape apologist
culture and their prevalence today.
No one should have to live in
fear of being attacked because she dresses
and acts how she pleases - that should be
a given. But even more heinous is that if a
woman is raped, her entire sexual history
along with other less-than-relevant details
about her life are up for scrutiny. I`m angry.
You should be angry too. The current rape
culture that were totally accustomed to
not only makes it possible for things like
Steubenville to happen, albeit generally
with a different judicial outcome, but also
for governments to decide that forced
intrauterine ultrasounds for abortion
seekers are not only appropriate, but
necessary.
While the Steubenville verdict
may represent a triumph for the victim, it
should not be a case for celebration - both
the crime and the media reaction make that
clear. Of reactions in the public realm, one
of the most signifcant came from CNN,
which aired a report stating that those
poor boys lives are ruined in regards to
their fourishing football careers. Yeah,
I`m with you, CNN. These boys really
fucked up. But pandering for sympathy
is totally unnecessary and truly upsetting.
They knew exactly what they did - their
actions between the incident and the trial
designated that. The confdence with
which their football coach told them that
they wouldn`t be punished showed that.
We need to be educated. The fact
that she was asking for it validates rape
in anyone`s mind is utterly despicable.
It needs to be internalized that a short
skirt does not automatically indicate an
invitation for a hand up it, and that a tipsy
stumble does not make an opportunity. The
girl in the Steubenville case was too out of
it for anything she said during the attack
to be considered consent. She did not
remember anything the next day. Adults in
the two boys lives knowingly participated
in a cover-up, trying to prove that yes, she
was essentially asking for it. This girl went
through an intense scrutiny and abuse of
her character and life. So why didn`t CNN
mention the weight that she will have to
carry with her, which the process of a trial
could have only exacerbated? Why do
they only speak to the ruined lives of the
perpetrators? I don`t doubt they are sorry.
But were they sorry before or after they
faced sentence? They were responsible
for their actions, so they should be able to
take their punishment, and so should our
damned news sources. I am so exhausted of
rape apologists grasping so desperately for
every excuse possible that the perpetrator
becomes a victim too.
This case has brought to the
surface a dialogue that we need to have. All
of us. There is too much of a gray area in
peoples` minds as to what rape is. How can
we expect a judicial system to work if we
are collectively so confused? But beyond
a clearer defnition, which was most
recently changed in early 2012 by the FBI
to include men, we need to internalize that
sexual assault of any kind is not okay. The
Steubenville rape case could have served
as a platform, or even example, on which
to show that sexual assault is not a vague
problem, but something that needs to be
taken very seriously. Instead, the show that
the media has put on tells rapists that they
deserve our sympathy.

The structure is a cube encased in
marble, an inscrutable block. Its interior
is an echoing void. The only apparatus
is a wheel, set into a panel inscribed
with symbols which depict, among other
more arcane phenomena, the phases
of the moon, or the blinking of a silent
eye. Above, a skewed pyramidal ceiling,
coated with a pebbly royal blue dermis,
terminates in a squared oculus. Below, the
foor`s imperceptible inward tilt terminates
in a drain. Four walnut pews, arranged
in another square, overlook the drain in
anticipation. The Lens waits, a reticent,
vigilant cyclops, for the day when it will
be called to fulfll its true purpose.
The enormity of the calculations that
have gone into the construction of the
Lens and its mysterious calibrations can
be observed in a number of seemingly
inexplicable changes that have occurred
at this college in recent years. Read no
further if you wish to remain suspended
in the warm yolk of ignorance. In fact, for
your own safety, I would advise you to stop
now and destroy this newspaper.*
But if you feel as if you have been
lied to for too long, if your hunger for the
truth is stronger than your instinct for self-
preservation, you will be satisfed to know
that your suspicions are more justifed than
you could ever have imagined. However,
even if you are already among the
awakened and paranoid few, when you
understand the extent of the corruption that
I have discovered, comrade, you are going
to shit your tin foil pants.
My investigation began in 2010, when
I became curious as to why the sign at the
end of Second Street had been (and still is)
missing the letters P and S since before
I came to Bennington. Every day I passed
the rusted iron protrusion which declared
that I was approaching Main Camu
with growing irritation. I mentioned
this blemish in a conversation with my
faculty advisor at the time, who has since
disappeared from the college. Blanching,
the now-vanished professor said, I would
encourage you, Emma, not to explore that
matter any further. You would do better
to think about other things. Your Plan, for
example: have you considered bringing
agrarian feminism or Cambodian modern
dance into it at all? Let`s talk about that
now.
That night, I received a call on my room
phone. The speaker on the end of the
line, speaking though a voice modulator,
delivered this brief message and hung
up: 'When the rats begin to fee from
below decks, dial extension C-R-A-Y; the
password will become known to you by
then. Beware the fog.
In light of this alarming phone call,
I received the news of the release of
the plans for CAPA`s construction with
foreboding. When I learned that there
was going to be a building known as The
Lens, with no apparent purpose other than
meditation, my concerns multiplied.
But the turning point came with the
torrent of changes that have taken place
this term, most notably the evacuation of
several high-level administrative positions
in the months leading up to Liz Coleman`s
imminent retirement. Concurrently,
the College began to prepare for
the transition to Aramark as a food
supplier. The Presidential search proved
to be more obscure than the election of
the new Pope. The offerings periodically
interrupting the emptiness of the shelves at
the student center, and the bookshelves in
the bookstore, became increasingly sparse.
On Tuesday, David Rees made a proposal
to the Bennington Food Coop that offered
them full use of the now-essentially-
defunct bookstore, school support in tax
and legal matters, and salaried positions in
exchange for the organization`s absorption,
and subsequent surrender of autonomy into
the jurisdiction of the college.
That night, unable to sleep, I began
searching through the Bennington
website for answers. I came upon a
video, CAPA Construction: Two Years
in Two Minutes. In the video, a time
lapse of the fabrication of CAPA whirs
merrily away; that is, until 0:31, when an
impenetrable white fog descends upon the
site, and obscures the entire shot for a full
second. My heart pounding, I went to the
phone booth and dialed extension 2729.
What she order? asked a gruff
voice. Confdently, although frightened by
the anachronism, I answered, 'Fish fllet.
'So you haven`t forgotten, said the
voice, and I had a fash of recognition.
...Eileen? I asked, not necessarily
surprised.
'Let`s leave names out of it, the
voice answered, and get down to brass
tacks. We don`t have very much time.
I don`t expect you to believe what she
told me. But in the face of the changes
that have taken place here recently,
this explanation answers questions that
otherwise seem insoluble.
Years ago, a young Elizabeth Coleman`s
car broke down during a long, lonely
drive down a desolate stretch of highway
in the Mexican desert. Nothing is known
about the hours that passed before another
motorist, fnding her car abandoned by the
side of the road, followed her tracks away
from the vehicle and found her standing,
arms outstretched, staring up at the night
sky. But afterwards Coleman began to
show a sudden fascination with a small,
reportedly dysfunctional liberal arts college
in the mountains of southern Vermont. We
know what happened next, more or less. For
years, the subterranean motivations behind
the Coleman Administration remained
invisible from the outside. However, too
slowly to be perceived, the school began to
make plans for scaling down on expensive
things like student resources, tightening
control over student life, and throwing a
protective veil over the operations of the
administration. After all, when you`re
going to build a portal between the
underworld, outer space, and the twilight
realm, you`re going to want a certain
degree of privacy.
Because that is exactly what the Lens
is: a receptacle for energies otherwise
foreign to this plane of existence. Directly
beneath the innocuous drain in the foor of
the Lens, a great void opens: this is where
the inverted, 18-karat-gold-lined pyramid,
with which the drain is perfectly aligned,
lies silently in wait. As you can imagine,
that much gold is very costly, and it has
been laboriously purchased at the expense
of your textbooks, grants, and grab-n-go
lunch choices.
And if you are excited to learn more
about the Presidential Search candidates,
you will soon be disappointed, because
the next President of Bennington College
is not among them. Look instead to the
sky, or do some DMT and ask around in
the nightmare realm that you will briefy
inhabit before the return to sobriety.
Wherever It currently resides, before the
Summer Solstice, It will make Bennington
College Its new home.
This is where Aramark comes
in. Aramark is the only food supplier with
access to the enormous quantities of the
phosphorescent aquatic vegetation that
the new President will require in order to
feed Itself. Aramark is also the only food
supplier with the capability to ensure that
all food provided to Bennington College
students, faculty, administration, and staff
contains the psychotropic chemical that
will allow humans to perceive the new
President in the physical realm. Any food
not tainted with this chemical will be banned
from campus, making the absorption of the
Coop essential, and getting off the meal
plan out of the question.
Although they have been taking part in
the preparations for this transition for years,
senior administrative offcers have begun
to feel nervous about their place in the
new hierarchy. There are rumblings that
the new President will be bringing some of
Its own staff with It, and this may result
in a situation that the disembodied voice
that speaks to Liz Coleman`s secretary
describes with a word that translates
roughly to redundancy, but has slightly
more disturbing connotations. One by
one, members of the administration have
decided to escape while they still can, and
have cut all lines of communication so
that It cannot pursue them. However, as
the disembodied voice tells Liz Coleman`s
secretary, 'they`re going to have to do
better than that.
Soon, the time will come when the grate
covering the drain will be unscrewed, and
the light of a full moon will flter down,
blue-tinted, and the beam will illuminate
the inverted pyramid beneath the Lens in
a terrible, brilliant fash, and Bennington
College will be forever transformed. The
ramifcations are inconceivable.
On Tuesday night, I was almost too
shocked to remember to ask about the
missing P and S; anyway, in the face
of all of this, it didn`t seem to matter very
much anymore. But I asked anyway. There
was a moment of silence on the line before
my informant went on.
Yes... I am afraid that this is the worst
part.
Before she could go on, the line exploded
into static, and then went dead.

The BenningTon Free Press / April 5th, 2013 > Vol. 19 No. 2 A R T S
The Brattleboro Museum and Art Cen-
ter calls its latest Chinese art exhibition
Hot Pot, after a Chinese stew of vari-
able ingredients eaten communally. In a
short preface on BMACs website, Mara
Williams defnes the display`s theme: the
reworking of traditional artistic norms in
the service of new, rapidly forming identi-
ties. Chinas leading intellectuals and art-
ists, she writes, are questioning, probing,
exploring, pushing back against, and even
outright condemning |.| oIfcial policy.
The artists exhibited do not reject this
policy entirely but subvert it, using its own
terms against it. In a society like Chinas,
Williams continues, where the communal
is privileged over the individual, an aes-
thetic that Iavors continual refnements
over invention is unsurprising. Theres a
strange tension in her words, since dissi-
dence and subversion should mark the rise
of the individual over this hackneyed trope
of Chinese collectivism, current in the West
since well before Mao. The contradiction is
real, though, present in the society of Chi-
na itself. If Chinese postmodernity exists at
all, its nothing like the liberal-democratic
Western kind: it`s a society with clear limi-
tations and taboos, set by the ruling Com-
munist Party, so that a baseline level of lip
service to collectivism and to the state is
de rigeur.
Still, things are changing, and new
channels for protest are opening up. Liu
Bolin, an artist from Shandong, created his
Hiding in the City series to protest the
government destruction of a Beijing artists
colony in 2005. The series has garnered
much international recognition. Originally
photographed in Beijing, the expanded set
consists of photographic self-portraits of
the artist blended chameleon-style with
the assistance of a full-body paint job
into a variety of urban settings, including
New York City and Venice. The Beijing
series can be found at BMAC. Many of the
pieces have a distinctly industrial fair: Liu
is seen lying on a pile of bricks and in an
old watercourse, or standing in front of a
bulldozer and a stack of coal. In two fur-
ther images, Liu is painted into the fashy,
repetitive displays of an upscale toy store
and a supermarket soda aisle. In some of
these photos, the blending is so good that it
takes a moment or two for the eye to catch
Lius outlines, the subtle shading around
his face. Recognition brings on a jarring
moment of alienation, a questioning of
modernity itself. Liu becomes, quite liter-
ally, a city ghost, a common term for dis-
placed peasant workers or nongmin gong.
As industrialization advances in Chinas
countryside, these nongmin gong leave
their peasant communities for the cities,
laboring in factories and on construction
sites, living in slums, all but invisible to
native urbanites. The city conceals, indus-
trialization conceals, modernity conceals.
In Hiding in the City, Liu puts him-
self in the place of these casualties of in-
dustrialism, emphasizing the glamor and
virtuality of the new Chinese supercities.
This substitution is intensely personal:
while Liu is present in all of the photos, in
only one can other painted ghosts be dis-
cerned. Liu, a sacrifcial fgure, serves as
Chinas half-hidden conscience, an appeal
to humanity in the face of inhuman indus-
try. Still, there is a strange contradiction in
this symbolic martyrdom. Arguably, indus-
trial modernity itselI, frst communist, then
quasi-capitalist, brought about the permis-
sive attitude toward individualism that al-
lows Liu`s work to fourish. A country oI
peasant communities, as China was a cen-
tury ago, cant afford to allow its youth to
break tradition, much less to give them a
life as art-world superstars. Even a second-
world, Maoist China, under siege from Ja-
pan and from the capitalist side of the Cold
War, couldnt afford much toleration for
individual dissent through artistic expres-
sion. But an industrialized and partially
liberalized China can. If Liu is a martyr to
modernity, hes a very successful one.
What makes Argia different from other
cities is that it has earth instead of air. The
streets are completely flled with dirt, clay
packs the rooms to the ceiling, on every
stair another stairway is set in negative,
over the roofs of the houses hang layers
of rocky terrain like skies with clouds,
reads one passage from Italo Calvinos
Invisible Cities. The work of experimental
fction, which sweeps the reader through
urban fantasies described in 55 such short
prose poems, is the basis for an upcoming
devised theater performance coming soon
to the Vermont Arts Exchange.
In much the way that Calvinos work
rejects a traditional narrative trajectory
in favor of a structure that fragments and
recomposes stories in collaboration with
the reader, this stage adaptation has no
script, no predefned set, or even a linear
story. Currently being developed by three
Bennington College performers, one
sculptor, and one stage manager, Invisible
Cities is unusual even among recent student
drama productions. Its form and content
will be mostly the result of a collaborative
process of learning, experimentation and
group decision-making.
The production has been in
development since it was frst conceived
almost a year ago. Rehearsals began
immediately at the beginning of this term.
I read the book after coming back from a
lot of traveling myself and it really struck a
chord, explains the works director, Sarah
Matusek 13. The cast includes Matusek,
Sean-Patrick OBrien 14, and Maria
Jacobson 14. Their team also includes
Caitlin Brzezinski 13 as stage manager,
and the fnal work will include a special
sculptural set by Sarah Fetterman 14.
Im interested in the concept of cities
as containers of experience, and how cities
are designed and continue to be constructed
and deconstructed based upon desires,
fears and memories, Matusek says of
the performances overarching theme. At
the time of our interview, the performers
were developing a storyline around the
characters of three royal siblings who each
construct a city within their shared space.
Matusek, who has studied in some
devised theater hotspots including
the Odin Teatret in Denmark and Dah
Teatar in Serbia, explains how this
practice emphasizes that the actor can
also be a creative artist. This notion, in
itself, is at least as old as Stanislavskis
groundbreaking naturalistic acting
methods developed over a century ago.
Whether devised theaters approach stems
from more recent innovations or this
deeper legacy, it`s clear the feld makes
collective participation the prime motor
of artistic work. Here at Bennington,
Matusek notes, performing arts students
frequently explore different roles within
collaborations, fuidly switching between
writing, designing and performing.
Working toward the fxed perIormance
dates at the Vermont Arts Exchange of
May 17th and 19th, the cast and crew
have to trust the process as each rehearsal
nudges closer to opening day. Despite the
Iragmented and oIten diIfcult nature oI
the source material, cast member Sean-
Patrick OBrien mentions, we wanted [the
performance] to be accessible... to people
who dont go to the theater a lot. With
high hopes and higher ambitions, Invisible
Cities the performance, like the book,
promises to defy certain laws of gravity.

Liu Bolin, The Invisible Man
Collaborative project to perform Invisible Cities at VAE
The senior concert is among the most
visible of all types of advanced work
that Bennington students complete. For a
month leading up to the end of term, music
students and their multiple, volunteer
perIormers fll the various campus music
venues with a showcase of skill developed
over the course of four years. Seniors
often feel compelled to get involved in
this work not just as musicians, but also
as facilitators, designers, and directors of a
total work of art. Its easy for the choices
to become unmanageable. In a cultural
climate that places increasing value on not
just quality of experience but also novelty,
its a challenge to strike a balance between
old and newbetween exploring with
ideas about performativity and just making
the damn music. Riley Skinner 13 has
taken much of this into consideration, and
shes resolute. The idea of Psychonaut
is... to have some kind of experience with
my ensemble and with the audience that is
a shared dreamscape.
Skinner is adamant about using the
work to open up space for her participants,
and to create something together that we
couldnt create without all of [us]. The
same way a psychonaut, an explorer of
the unconscious, exhumes a dreamworld
into waking existence, Psyconaut,
Skinner suggests, will achieve a musical
communion of performers, audience and
collaborators. No wonder then that its also
the largest group Skinner has ever worked
with. Its a large ensemble. Im working
with six female singers, cellist, trombone,
drums, synth, electric, upright bass...
myself and whatever Im playing, and
four male vocalists as wellsometimes a
fddle player... Skinner pauses to consider
additions to the list, and then explains that
this concert is much more curated than
something she could show performing
alone. She also believes it will mark a clear
contrast with her current musical reputation
on campus. I feel like Ive been pretty
pigeon-holed here as the person who does
singer-songwriter music, you know the girl
who sings and plays ukulele. But I dont
study that here, thats not actually what
Ive done in the music department... This
is a chance to share what Ive done here
academically and personally. Psychonaut
aspires to be one total experience, or as
Skinner puts it, a journey.

Since the late 1970s much
contemporary art, from music to sculpture,
has emphasized this focus on experiencea
refection on the audience, context and the
construction of social life around the art.
Rosalind Krauss was one oI the frst critics
to note how minimalist sculpture heralded
a transition from the museums status as an
encyclopedic collection of objects to a
site of encountera place where space and
time themselves play out through the art.
Similarly, much contemporary music has
sought forms that act on its environment
by demanding new kinds of interaction
from its audience. John Cages 433,
which instructs performers to play nothing
for that length of time, might remain the
purest gesture in this tradition. Leif Inges
9 Beet Stretch, a version of Beethovens
9th Symphony stretched to 24 hours, is
often the centerpiece of daylong gatherings
where audiences listen, sleep, eat and
dream together.
For Psychonaut, Skinner is intentional
about her context. Im trying really hard
to get it exclusive to Bennington. I dont
want it to be like, this infnite thing that
could be performed anywhere else. I want
to use the resources that are here, and the
people that are here and the talent that is
Recently, someone approached us and
asked if we only did negative reviews.
After being tremendously taken aback
we said NO! Dont you remember that
time we reviewed Mansome? We gave it 8
beautifully crafted toupees!
This comment really hurt our feelings,
and after harping on it for a while, it only
hurt us more. We dont hate movies, we
just refuse to tolerate mediocrity. Sue us.
And NO we do not look for the worst
movies possible; we have genuine hope for
all oI the flms we watch. We`ll admit that
Snow Beast was a set up. We knew it was
going to be bad.
In response we decided to choose a
movie that we KNOW we like: Big Fish
(Tim Burton, 2003). Haters gonna hate.
Leave your Tim Burton prejudice at the
door, this movie is fawless and just shut
your mouth. There is no logical place to
begin, so well start with the synopsis from
Netfix: 'In this disarming fantasy told
largely through fashbacks, young reporter
William Bloom attempts to learn more
about his dying Iather by fnding the truth
behind a lifetime of his fanciful tall tales
and legends of epic proportions. This is
accurate. But it is oh so much more than
that.
Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney
take turns being the perfect protagonist,
Edward Bloom. He tells his stories, often
more fantastical than real. Whether the
stories are true or not, the realizations of
them on flm are. We can`t think oI a
word, and Ior the frst time in a good way.
The best moment oI the flm, however,
takes place not in an elaborate story, but
in the present reality. An old and dying
Edward Bloom sits fully submerged and
clothed in his bathtub. His wife sees him
and approaches the tub, climbing in with
him (also fully clothed). They share a
moment in the bathtub that we can only
describe as beautiful; a moment that every
spouse dreams of.
We laughed, and some of us (Lily) even
cried (but really Greg only made it without
teardrops on his pillow because he was
stuIfng his Iace with cookies). It`s true, it
gets rough there for a minute, but once you
succumb to the sadness, you are at once
lifted up again by a beautiful ceremony
that ties everything up just right. So well
end by saying, that even though weve seen
it before, Big Fish does not disappoint. It
fully deserves 10 surprise Miley Cyrus
appearances out of 10 (Oh yeah. Shes in
there).
Whatever his personal stake in things,
Liu deliberately shows usand uninten-
tionally personifesthe tensions oI Chi-
nese post/modernity: between the individ-
ual and the collective, between the old and
the new, between capitalism and social-
ism. Before he makes us think about these
contradictions, he makes us feel them.
Hiding in the City successfully induces
in the viewer a feeling of uncanny distance
and discomIort, a diIfcult achievement in
a gallery setting. This sense of irremedia-
ble alienation and helplessness has walked
Dreaming up Psychonaut (cont.)
here to make something that could only
happen here, rather than something that is
bigger than all of us.
In her time at Bennington, Skinner
has worked with most of the permanent
music faculty as well as spending a Field
Work Term with visiting sound artist Jeff
Feddersen. During Spring Term 2012,
Skinner developed a site-specifc sound
installation constructed of a dozen lamps
she borrowed from friends. Turning on any
one of these lamps would trigger its bulb
to light up and at the same time play back
a looped recording a different individuals
singing, acapella, the theme song from
the 1995 flm Babe. Turning on all or
some of the lamps produced the effect of a
disembodied chorus, sound rising with the
light.
Paradoxically, Psychonaut doesnt
aspire to offer a single, uniform
interpretation even as it addresses the
seeming impermeability of the inner mind.
Unlike some academic music that appeals
almost entirely to the rational mind in lieu
of the ears or emotion, Skinners work
asserts an intellectual message that will
engage the audience in many capacities.
hand-in-hand with industrial modernity
since it frst came to Great Britain, having
appeared in the work of authors as diverse
as Victor Hugo and Thomas Hardy, Upton
Sinclair and Charlie Chaplin before reach-
ing us here through Liu, its latest mouth-
piece. Freud came up with a name for the
sensation, the unheimliche or uncanny;
Marx called it alienation. Its a scary feel-
ing, but it strikes a chord with all of us from
time to time, Chinese or not, industrial or
post-industrial. That, I think, is what gives
Lius series its power.
