City Vitals addresses the most critical issue facing American cities today - What does it take for a city to succeed in todays global economy? In an increasingly global and knowledge-driven economy, the ingredients of success are changing. City Vitals analyzes the four key characteristics to economic success today, that spell CITY: Connections, Innovation, Talent and Your citys distinctiveness. Cities succeed because they are well-connected, both Fellowally and to the wider world, because they are fertile places for innovation and entrepreneurship, because they nurture and attract talent, and because each city has distinctive characteristics and strengths. Current Action Agenda The Talent Dividend (TD), a signature program of CEOs for Cities, fosters success among our network cities to increase the post-secondary attainment rate among their residents. In a move to increase the political and civic will to produce more college graduates and thereby help cities capture real economic gains, CEOs for Cities calculated The Talent Dividend. We entered the conversation on education from a place of focusing on the economic success of cities. Our research, accompanied by a 32-city tour, helped place talent development on the civic agenda of many cities across the country. We are currently in the middle of a $1million prize competition with 57 cities competing to see which city can raise their college completion the fastest in three years. We convene regularly through our virtual network and annually for a Talent Dividend conference. The Green Dividend: CEOs for Cities understands that global climate change is a profound threat to humanity. We have witnessed an increasing number of cities pursuing green policies in recent years. City residents earn a green dividend because they save on cars and gas. This means local residents have more money to spend on other things they value, which in turn stimulates the local economy. CEOs for Cities coined the term Green Dividend in 2007. Following our initial report Portlands Green Dividend, we have prepared city specific reports for New York, Chicago, and San Diego. In 2008, the Green Dividend was incorporated into the broader City Dividends report, which estimated that reducing vehicle miles traveled in the 50 largest US metropolitan areas by one mile per person per day would produce savings to US consumers of $31 billion annually. Since publishing the Green Dividend, CEOs for Cities has produce several supporting pieces of research that provide complementary insights about how cities provide economic advantages by enabling greener lifestyles. Driven to the

Brink showed that core city real estate tended to retain its value better than exurban real estate in the face of rising gas prices. Walking the Walk showed that walkability adds measurably to the real value of urban housing.
