Entrepreneurship, Employability& Business Education

Organized by AIMA-CME

29-30th November 2012, New Delhi

Entrepreneurship, Employability& Business Education

BACKGROUND Business Education has been provided by institutions of higher learning for more than century now. It has primarily helped people acquire requisite skills, knowledge and competencies for lucrative jobs in the corporate world. Despite recent turmoil in job market, many of us still believe that MBAs continue to command a premium in the market: they are more likely to get jobs than people without MBAs and, on average, receive a higher salary. But with rising skill-gaps across the economies, the pertinent questions that comes quite often to our mind is whether Business Education is meeting the needs of the coming of age Indian society? What is the real gain of students in Business Education in terms of gained competencies at various levels? Business Education should merely focus on employability of its takers or it should also enthuse entrepreneurship amongst them. Is there any relationship of business education with entrepreneurship? And this question becomes even more perplexed when we try to seek answer to another question: Do entrepreneurs really need a business school education? Is there a dichotomy amongst entrepreneurship, employability and business education? Among the thousands of business schools now operating around the world we would be hard pressed to find one that does not teach the skills of entrepreneurship. However, of the people who immediately spring to mind when one thinks of entrepreneurs Bill Gates, Richard Branson or Oprah Winfreh, for example-few have done more than deliver a speech at B-School. Indeed, recent studies suggest what many intuitively suspect: that entrepreneurship may be in bloodmore to do with genes than classroom experience. It has also been said that Business Schools work on the factory model, and is in many ways not suited to training entrepreneurs.Entrepreneurship works on the apprenticeship model. There is also need to understand the relationship between the needs of the contemporary Indian Society regarding Business Education and the extent to which these needs are reflected in the demand for being trained as Business Professionals. What should the business education aim at from the societal point of view? Should it provide only theoretical knowledge about the business

processes and procedures or should it also provide opportunities of gaining practical knowledge and skills to the students. If skills are to be provided, the question is what type of skills should it concentrate on? What kind of skills and competencies do the employers demand from business professionals and what are the factors which they keep in mind while recruiting people? Also what skills and competencies play a crucial role in functioning of people and professionals in the field? In light of these divergent views, the seventh National Research Conference of AIMA would take up theme of Employability , Entrepreneurship, and Business Education for debate and discussion by all the stake holders viz; the bonafide participants to Business Education Programmes, Research Scholars, the Business Academics, People from Industry and Government ,Policy Makers and others from a larger Intellectual Community.
