Introduction to gCaptain.com
Here at gCaptain, we specialize in introducing and promoting new tools available from
Web 2.0 to the professional mariner. Web 2.0 is the integration of information, tools and
services that promote communities on the web. On the most basic level it means we
aggregate and extract information in the form of news, photos and video from external
sources throughout the web. At the highest levels, itʼs sharing ideas internally (e.g.
between the gCaptain forum and blog) and externally through our social media outposts
(e.g. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc,).
Blog
This is the premier section of our site. The blog is regularly updated with
news reports written by seasoned mariners who are focused on reporting
issues that influence the maritime community. What makes the blog
interesting is our active recruitment of industry participants. Many of the
posts are sent in from officers located thousands of miles at sea; a truly
unique trait.
Forum
The forum has the most engaged readership within gCaptain. It allows our
readers to start and participate in discussions on topics of personal
interest. With over 700 active members, it is a great place to ask for
advice, network and joke with industry insiders.
Tools
The majority of the pages contained within the tools section are links to
navigational charts, weather forecasts and data, operational calculators
and other reference material. This section also contains our RSS Mash-
ups, the most popular of which is the Job Section.
Discover
The Discoverer section provides readers with breaking news stories fed
automatically from all around the web. Aggregated from all the top
authorities in the maritime industry, the news Discover keeps readers up-
to-speed on all the latest news headlines with the use of RSS Feeds.
Since our launch in April of 2007, gCaptain has quickly grown to become one of the most
widely viewed maritime sites on the internet, receiving more online visitors in the U.S. than
even LloydsList, Fairplay and TradeWinds. So far, we have recorded over 2 million
pageviews and 800,000 unique visitors with now more than 200,000 pageviews per
month.

Tools
Since gCaptain.com does not require membership or visitor login to access content, it is hard
for us to get an exact read on who our visitors are. However, through the high concentration
of visitors around most major ports throughout the world, amount of visitors we obtain
through targeted searches, and the quality of discussion in our forum, we are able to
determine that the majority of visitors are shipboard officers, maritime industry executives
and other professionals associated with the maritime community.
