Image Notes 1. This column has the times. Notice that times between hours are fractions (1:30 = 1.5, 1:45 = 1.75, etc.) 2. This column has the "t" values of each time (1:00 = 15, 1:30 = 22.5, etc) 3. This column converts the angles into radians. Equation: [=((PI())/180)*B:B] 4. This column calculates the angle that the line should be on the dial (in radians). Equation: [=ATAN(SIN(H1)*TAN(C:C))] -------------- "H1" contains the Latitude value 5. This column converts column D's values into degrees (these are the numbers you want). Equation: [=(180/(PI())*D:D)] 6. This column converts your Latitude value into radians. Equation: [=(47.5)*(PI()/180)] ----------- 47.5 = my Latitude. -------------- NOTE: All cells in this column have the same value. Only the top cell "H1" is actually necessary.
Image Notes 1. Noon will be this direction -------> 2. This angle must be equal to your latitude. 3. This edge will sit on the face of the sundial 4. This edge will cast the "time telling" shadow 5. This edge will be perpendicular to the face of the sundial 6. The gnomon

Image Notes 1. All of my time lines. Every 15 minutes from 4am to 8pm 2. All the time lines meet at this point Image Notes 1. This is where the compass goes
http://www.instructables.com/id/Pocket-Sundial-1/
Image Notes 1. This corner of the gnomon must be at the point where all the time lines meet. This insures that the gnomon's shadow will fall on the correct line. I placed the compass circles here so that this point will be easy to find later 2. This picture shows the dial face with the gnomon folded down. When the sundial is in use, the gnomon will be up, perpendicular to the dial face.
Image Notes 1. Look, its 2:00! 2. Notice that the gnomon is pointed at true north, not magnetic north. The magnetic declination is about 20 degrees 3. This is not the design I ended up going with, but it shows how to test your design

Image Notes 1. Dremel 2. Sanding attachment (the kind actually made of sandpaper)

Image Notes 1. After cutting and sanding 2. What it looked like before

Image Notes 1. Coaster 2. Using the pencil from my compass 3. Spin it, slowly
Image Notes 1. I wear gloves so that I can really go at with with the hacksaw. DO NOT wear gloves if you are using a band saw. 2. Freshly cut. Not too pretty (yet)

Image Notes 1. Dremel with router bit and routing attachment 2. Circle drawn in pencil with the compass
http://www.instructables.com/id/Pocket-Sundial-1/
Image Notes 1. After the first rough cut using the router bit
Image Notes 1. I cut this extra notch so that, when the top is made to match it, the two halves will only fit together one way and will not spin.
Image Notes 1. After using the router, followed by the sanding attachment
http://www.instructables.com/id/Pocket-Sundial-1/
Image Notes 1. The pencil line was traced with the two halves pressed together, using the shape of the bottom half as a guide 2. Start at the center with the router and work you way outward.
Image Notes 1. Looking good after using the sanding attachment. A little hand sanding will clean it up even more

Image Notes 1. The design for the gnomon must fit within this triangle Image Notes 1. These "pegs" will be used to hold the gnomon in place on the dial face.

Image Notes 1. Use this end to pound two slots for the gnomon to fit into 2. This end is used to open and close the dremel collet
