Adoption in Islam

Adoption of an orphan / helpless child was a very popular and moral practice amongst
pre-islamic Arabs.
By adopting an orphan, they used to consider the adopted child as their own and pass on
the adopter's genealogy and name, inheritance, and the prohibition of marriage on
grounds of consanguinity

Muhammad, the Prophet of Islam, had an adopted son named Zaid.
He proudly presented him to his tribe saying: "This is my son"
Tafsir Al-Qurtubi 117/14

Translation:
"O people of Quraysh, I let you bear witness that he (Zaid) is my son, inheriting
from me and I inheriting from him"

Zaid had a beautiful wife named Zainab.
One day, Muhammad the Prophet of Islam walked into his adopted son Zaids house.
Zaid was not there but he caught a glimpse of his voluptuous and beautiful wife
Zainab
Zainab Muhammads daughter in law, was in her birthday suit.
The admiration aroused him instantly, which Zainab also noticed and mentioned it to
her husband Zaid later.

Translation:
"One day Muhammad went out looking for Zaid. Now there was a covering of hair
cloth over the doorway, but the wind had lifted the covering so that the doorway
was uncovered. Zainab was in her chamber, undressed, and admiration for her
entered the heart of the Prophet"

Zaid rushed to his fathers house and offered Zainab to him.
Muhammad worried about possible bad press and refused to accept it. But...
But Allah will not take no for an answer and insisted on their union by revealing, as
usual, some ayas (verses):
Qur'an 33:37 - 37












But when Zaid had accomplished his want of her, We gave her to you as a wife, so
that there should be no difficulty for the believers in respect of the wives of their
adopted sons,

This led to many accusations against Muhammad:

"Muhammad prohibits the wives of the son while he himself marries the wife of his
son Zaid."

Translation:
The dissimulators said: "Muhammad prohibits the wives of the son while he himself
marries the wife of his son Zaid." So Allah revealed the verse "Muhammad is not
the father of any of your men." Quran 33:40
Feeling the need to justify his intervention, Allah reveals another verse in which he
simply cancels the adoption of Zaid by Muhammad!!!

Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah
and the Last of the prophets; and Allah is cognizant of all things.

They also said:
"We only called him Zaid Ibn (son of) Muhammad till the verse 'Call them by (the
names of) their fathers' was revealed."

Sayyidina Abdullah ibn Umar (RA) reported that they used to call Zayd ibn
Harithah, Zayd ibn Muhammad till this was revealed:
Call them by their fathers; that is more equitable in the sight of Allah. (33 :5)

Allah cancels all adoptions.

In Islam, one can and is encouraged to care for an orphan, but it is only as an act of
kindness and there can never be any legal relationship.
In matters of inheritance, the Quran does not recognize any claim except those
based on relationship through blood and marriage.
It is permissible for a man to marry the divorced wife of his "adopted" son.

Note: In the verse (33:37) there is stated a particular purpose for this revelation and
action of Muhammad.
Lets have another look at Quran 33:37

"Mom" or "Dad"
