February 25, 2013 Ben Schlansky Sportime Facilities One Randall's Island New York, NY 10035 RE: Building Light Transmission Dear Ben, I understand you are looking for information about the light transmission through the envelope of our air supported structures with regard to the replacement structure at your Harbor Island facility. Using that structure design for indoor tennis, the indirect 1000 watt metal halide lighting system, and translucent fabric for the dome I have estimated the light transmission through the dome. My resulting calculated light intensity at the surface of the dome is123 lux. This is roughly equal to a dimly lit room or a very dark overcast day. The interior light fixtures are 1000 watt metal halide fixtures with a light output of about 87 lumens per watt. The hang light is located 8 feet from the dome surface and emits the light at a 60 degree angle thereby covering an area of 63.2 square meters. With the fixture lighting efficiency of 74.3%, the light output shining on the inside of the dome is 1026 lumens per square meter (lux). The exterior fabric is 12% translucent, and so the light intensity on the outside surface is 12% of 1026 lux, or 123 lux. The light fixture data sheet is attached for reference showing the light output and fixture efficiency. In order to understand what these light levels mean, the table below describes light intensity of various common conditions. Illuminance Surfaces illuminated by: 4 Moonless, overcast night sky (starlight) 10 lux 0.002 lux Moonless clear night sky with airglow 0.271.0 lux Full moon on a clear night 3.4 lux Dark limit of civil twilight under a clear sky 50 lux Family living room lights 80 lux Office building hallway/toilet lighting 100 lux Very dark overcast day 320500 lux Office lighting 400 lux Sunrise or sunset on a clear day. 1,000 lux Overcast day; typical TV studio lighting 10,00025,000 lux Full daylight (not direct sun) 32,000130,000 lux Direct sunlight The light emitted from our translucent air supported structure at night with the 1000 watt metal halide fixture arranged for indirect internal lighting has the appearance of a mild glow in the direct area of the light fixtures. Between the areas where the light fixture shines directly on the dome the light transmission is much lower as the diffuse light levels inside the building are approximately 500 lux, the outside light intensity would be 500 lux x 12% or 60 lux.

Arizon has produced many of our structures with opaque sides and translucent materials only at the top of the dome to create a skylight. Although this does reduce the amount of natural lighting inside the structure during the day, it blocks the light emitted from the dome in the opaque areas completely. The skylight area where the inside light may be visible from the outside is almost not seen at all from ground level. The diagram below shows how little of the skylight area is visible from the ground 1000 feet away from the dome.

At 34 from the dome the skylight is not visible at all. At 500 away only about 4 of the skylight area is visible. In addition, the light illuminance from the dome decreases with distance from the dome. Therefore, the light from the translucent portions of the dome (or the entire dome is the whole building is made with translucent material) will certainly be visible, but is not a problem of light intensity or brightness so much as the look of the building at night. Basically it comes down to personal preference rather than brightness that will either please or displease the observer. Below is a photo of a fully translucent dome using 1000 watt metal halide lights in a line around the inside of the dome. The view from the outside at dusk shows how the light is greater at the spot of the light fixture and the light above or below the light fixture. If this building were opaque with a skylight, the skylight area would not be visible from this angle.

Here is another picture from the inside of an air structure with a skylight. The dome is opaque around the sides of the structure and 12% translucent at the top. The light through the skylight area of this building is no greater than light sources from the surrounding buildings.

To summarize, the issue of light transmission through the dome is often much more an issue of style more than light intensity, of how the building looks rather than how bright the light source. If the discussion is truly one of brightness through the dome, the above light transmission estimates can be used for comparison to background light levels in the area. I hope this letter provides enough of our experience on the subject to answer your concerns. Sincerely, Thomas J. Soehngen VP - Engineering Arizon Structures
