A very broad definition of "Decision Support Tool" was used for inclusion in this database: "A decision support tool is any tool used as part of a formal or informal decision-support process" (Kapelan, et al, 2005, p. 136).
This database was created to help A/E professionals supporting the US Army. The US Army has adopted LEED as a rating tool for new construction, and thus a special focus was given to tools focused on LEED, in particular the LEED category in this database.
Sources used to identify tools: 1) web search "green building tools"; 2) published reports and on-line databases of tools, 3) USGBC, LEED-NC 2.2 Reference Guide; 4) EERE High Performance Buildings database - self reported tools; 5) Whole Building Design Guide; 6) EERE database software tools; 7) USACE Construction Engineering Research Lab (CERL) references for This database is intended to be "comprehensive" and SPiRiT there is no evaluation, ranking, or user preference (http://www.cecer.army.mil/SustDesign/SpiritRefe criteria associated with tools and resources listed rencesV1_4.xls); 8) "Tools of the Trade" report herein. for City of San Francisco by Global GreenUSA There many more software tools available in the international market, this database is limited to US or North American developers. The US DOE EERE database of software tools includes international sources.
This database was prepared in November-December 2006. This field is very dynamic, and more tools are Links often become inactive, only links that were being developed all the time. As such, this database active at the time of database development will become dated. (November-December 2006) were included. Printed publications, guide books and text books are abundant on the topic of green building and can be considered "tools" according to the definition guiding this work. No attempt was made to list all printed publications on green building, however. Printed publications were included if they were also available for free download, if they were government reference documents, government sponsored studies, building standards, or if they were refered to specifically by the USGBC. Many of the web sites included in this database have links to printed resources, and this is the primary manner in which these tools were captured.
