Hungary has taken a bold stand against biotech giant Monsanto and genetic modification by destroying 1000 acres of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, according to Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar. Unlike many European Union countries, Hungary is a nation where genetically modified (GM) seeds are banned. In a similar stance against GM ingredients, Peru has also passed a 10 year ban on GM foods. k o o b e c a Fn os uw ol lo F Planetsave reports: Almost 1000 acres of maize found to have been ground with genetically modified seeds have been s elci tr Ag nid n erT destroyed throughout Hungary, deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, said Lajos Bognar, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added. Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary. The checks will continue despite the fact that seek traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free, Bognar said. During the invesigation, controllers have found Pioneer Monsanto products among the seeds planted. The free movement of goods within the EU means that authorities will not investigate how the seeds arrived in Hungary, but they will check where the goods can be found, Bognar said. Regional public radio reported that the two biggest international seed producing companies are affected in the matter and GMO seeds could have been sown on up to the thousands of hectares in the country. Most of the local farmers have complained since they just discovered they were using GMO seeds. With season already under way, it is too late to sow new seeds, so this years harvest has been lost. And to make things even worse for the farmers, the company that distributed the seeds in Baranya county is under liquidation. Therefore, if any compensation is paid by the international seed producers, the money will be paid primarily to that companys creditors, rather than the farmers. Sources : 1. Natural Society 2. We are being poisoned. We are being told this food is safe. The economy sucks and many of us are s etpoor is W b eg ni ts eretnI (not lazy , just unable to find work) Healthy organic non gmo food is much more expensive than the pre packaged cancer causing crap. We are constantly bombarded with advertisemtnts EVERYWHERE we go. Government subsidized school lunch programs serve this poison. We are under attack. It is maddening. That is why we are sick and that is why we are fat. The natural treatment and cures for cancer are weeded out. Scientists who dont agree with how they want it.. end up dead. I know america sucks. I know our government has hurt billions of people. Not all americans are flag loving trailer trash. Plenty of us are good people who work hard. Most of us are sick though. We need help.

I am Canadian. We and the US Americans dont want GMOs either. It is the politicians who believe GMOs will make the food more available at a cheaper price etc and it might for a while but watch what happens when they have a crop failure and no seed left and all the original seed is gone or contaminated. You can make a difference just by sending GMO information to y our elected government officials and keep sending it to them. Once is not enough.

First off, We are Americans. If y our going to talk about us get the spelling correct. College age students from Europe including Hungry come to America and want to stay . Food we export to Europe has less food coloring and chemicals than what is sold in the stores in America. How sick is that. The problem here is, no matter how hard y ou try to keep y our own garden or fields free from GMOs there is a natural process that cant be stopped if these plants are allowed to flourish. Pollination! Bees, butterflies, all fly ing insects, and the wind pollinate and mix plants naturally . They cant tell if a plant is Genetically Modified or not. So even if y ou plant heirloom seeds (which I do my self and started doing y ears ago) it will still cross pollinate with the Genetically Modified plants. It take away the option of saving seeds (which I used to do). They are already having problems with keeping the Genetically Altered Corn out of fields of Organic Corn. The Genetically Modified plants are almost indestructible making them an even greater threat. Look up Utube David vs Monsanto There is a short version and a vid that is about an hour long but it really explains what has/is happening. Hungary was right. The only real thing they could do is burn the fields but frankly I am not sure that will stop the Genetically Altered plants. They may come back up by the roots. We will have to wait and see, wont we. Please be aware that Monsanto is try ing to put a patent on Life (seeds) and try ing to get that passed in all countries. That is a really great threat in regards to Genetically Modified Organisms.

Monsanto have been creating their roundup ready seeds for MANY y ears already . The idea is to
create sterile seeds which means to plant NEXT y ears crops, y ou HAVE to purchase the seeds from Monsanto. They AND the World Bank AND the IMF are forcing developing nations to plant these seeds and are not allowing farmers to plant ANY seeds that are NOT from Monsanto. Farmers used to allow some crops seed for next y ears crops, but not any more. Then we have MONO-culture .. HUGE fields of the same crop which means NO bio-diversity and NO natural predators which means .. ROUNDUP! Its not a government promoted thing .. its lobby ists for the enormous chemical companies .. not unlike the gun lobby ists .. its ALL about money .. NOT about feeding the poor!!

We are not all fat and sick, and many of us eat only locally grown organic crops when we can get them. Im with y ou attila. More Farmers, smaller farms, more quality . But they can control us through expendable supplies, primary through energy (fuel, electricity ). We need to start there and find way s to produce energy effective and environmentally friendly on our own (forget things like bio-diesel). If we have free energy we are close to independent. Then we can act sane and compete in quality and innovation instead against each other in fear of enough colored paper snippets they also control.

Bacillus thuringiensis is a naturally occurring soil bacteria that is accepted as an organic method of pest control. I dont need to reference, y ou go look it up all y ou want. Guess what its natural method is through a toxin: Bt delta endotoxin. Thats the Bt y oure all worried about in Gm corn. So, y ou simply identify the gene for it, insert into the corn genome and the corn does the work itself. Not so evil

Response to kfuly o: I know many of these contributors are making emotional comments, and if y ou make a scientific statement, most will not know how to respond. You, however, only scratch the surface on this bt issue. Sure, organic growers have spray ed the naturally soil occuring thuringiensis as pest, mostly caterpillar control. But to stretch from that to say ing it is OK to make the bacteria part of the cellular structure of an edible plant is like say ing if I play in the ocean it is OK to play in a tsunami. Any GM is a splice of one species of life into another. that does not mean either form of life is toxic on its own. When one organism consumes another for nourishment, does y our science know every subtlety that occurs? Of course not. do y ou risk feeding y our kids a diet of GMs. If y ou do, y ou are either very unenlightened or may be y ou work for one of these companies and have bought into their onslaught of BS.

Im no couch potato! We are in a war here where its fast becoming illegal to grow and consume y our own food!! Already we are underground when it comes to buy ing raw milk. A person cant even drink milk from his own cow without getting approval from the government. Soros is buy ing up all the land on which sits the main underground aquifer in our part of the country . Heck, its against the law to collect and use the rainwater that falls on y our property ! Yet people refuse to believe these things are happening. to Hunter and Adajl, I cant believe y oud say something so horrific, judgemental and ignorant. I am Canadian (not American) and unfortunate as it is, our government still allows GMOs in our country . As a citizen, there is nothing I can do about the growth of our agriculture, or factory farming, though I do try my hardest to choose organic, or home grown items. I would LOVE to know that my food is completely safe, for my self and my family and its terrible to know y ou want us, who are totally for natural food, to die horrible, cancer-filled deaths from eating Monsantos CRAP!

My mother and father immigrated to America after defecting Hungary in the 60s. Mother has returned to her homeland over 10 y ears ago. The Hungarian Government is much wiser than our own and this explains why my mothers health has returned since returning. Her health was steadfast deteriorating in the USA. Suffering from diabetes for so many y ears that eventually led to a stroke that paraly zed her entire left side. Mother has lost upwards of 150 pounds and no longer requires the use of a walker.

The Once Nationaal Housewives Association tried to stop GM Products coming into Britain. We even met Monsanto members but to no avail. Britain under Edward Heath gave control of our farming industry and therefore farmland which gave the EC under EU directive2001/18/EC gave the final decision on GM Crops to the EU not the British Government. Another point if GM products are so good why do farmers find they only grown once for produce then grow wild killing other plants.

in July 11 it would then make sense (time wise). I wonder why it is getting play now as if it is current?? Part of the problem we have in combatting the major GM-crerating companies is the resources they have and can bring to bear on those criticizing their efforts. By being clear, accurate and (as y ou said) working together, we have a chance.

Something seems off here to me. Isnt Hungary at about the same latitude as the American MidWest? Planting of corn here will not start until April/May at the earliest. Also given that 90 day maize aka corn also exists why is it too late to replant? This article does not make much sense.

im sure someone has put this up already ,but i didnt see it. im not sure it has some much to do with it being GM seeds as much as its cuz of what the seeds do.With Monsantos terminator technology , they will sell seeds to farmers to plant crops. But these seeds have been genetically -engineered so that when the crops are harvested, all new seeds from these crops are sterile (e.g., dead, unusable). This forces farmers to pay Monsanto every y ear for new seeds if they want to grow their crops.

Not that they will listen, Thank You to the people and government of Hungry for taking a stand. I took Planet Genetics and the best way to keep crops strong is diversity with wild varieties and remixing of genes of the same species of plant. That has alway s been done since we as human beings have learned to grow crops. However, I dont agree with Monsantos splicing of genes from other species of plants or animals. Round Up kills plants by clogging the plants biochemical pathway s, but many of Monsantos plants have an animal gene introduced so they can survive the application of Round Up. Especially their Soy beans, I am not current on the newer stuff they have done but worry that some of this crap that they put in some plants will mutate to other plants in the environment, and cause a major environmental disaster. Not to mention the horrible side affect this shit can or could cause to humans, plants and animals worldwide. Science is a wonderful thing that gives us great knowledge, but it is how we use that knowledge that determines the outcome. Unfortunately many governments and these large corporations do not care if the results are bad as long as they make their money today , they dont think about tomorrow or their effect on the people or the planet. I backed away from Biological and Biochemical Science when I realized that if I created something to help Humanity and the the planet, that even though my intention and invention would be to help and benefit the world, I know from history the governments and corporations would exploit it for EVIL purposes to destroy the inhabitants of earth and the planet itself. I knew that I could never live with my self or forgive my self if I gave them Knowledge and they turned it into a biological weapon. I just think that we all must avoid using all products, vehicles, power sources that contribute to the destruction of life as we know it on this planet, I know that will be hard, especially for the us poor. Must return to growing our own food, and raising livestock though co-ops with family , friends and neighbors if we can. If y ou can afford to put solar on y our homes, Only through action can we seek to change our future.

I do so agree with this as do most people in the United States right now. Excellent explanation here. I wish y ou could explain more of this on more web sites so the misinformation out there could be dealt with. There are seed companies that started saving seeds back in the 1960s when it became evident that Companies like Monsanto, Dow and there are many more companies that are Genetically Altering seeds. Just look up Heirloom seeds. And now there is misinformation about pollution caused by Solar Energy too. I had to really do some research to figure out where that was coming from. Mostly from Oil, Gas and Electric.

I was going to congratulate the country of Hungary for its courageous decision to destroy the crops grown with Monsanto seeds. Then I started reading the comments section written by the people of that country . The level of hatred toward Americans is pathological. Its paralleled only by the level of hatred for Jews. Good for Hungary ! Good for Peru! The United States wont even label what is in the food bought over the counter here. Most of us wouldnt buy Genetically Altered food. I have read and watched this extensively and Sneaking the seeds into the country has been planned by Monsanto and other large companies who are making these genetically altered seeds. If y ou control the seeds, y ou control the farmers which controls the food which then controls the people. Farmers using Monsanto/Dow seeds cant even save their seeds y early . This is not a good situation. I do feel sorry for the farmers that get caught in this though.

Not the Americans. The United States Government is allowing it. Unfortunately the government and what the people want is not the same thing any more. Polls have showed that 9 out of 10 people polled do not want GMOs. Salmon is the next one. Nicknamed Frankenfish. So many of us Americans. signed petitions and sent letters to our food regulatory agency , telling them we do not want this on the market, that they put off allowing this fish on the market for a few more months. However, the United States Governments regulatory agency will probably end up allowing it as they do every thing else Big Business wants. May be other countries should also sign these petitions or write letters to our United States Government. Unfortunately if it is allowed here it will manage to get into the other countries just like the Corn Seed managed to find its way (whether designed to happen or not) into Hungary and probably every other country in the world. The world has changed and we now have a global market. That in itself will be a detriment to any country that tries to keep their seeds free of GMO.

First of all, it is not the American people who are at fault here. They have been sy stematically stripped of most of their natural rights for about a century now, so slowly (at first) that they never saw it coming. Those who did see it coming were considered crackpots or subversives. Besides, Monsanto and their ilk are multinationals and hardly an exclusively American problem. For the record, most of the Americans I know dont want it either but have no legal recourse. As for me, if I cant produce it my self I try to get it from a local farmer who uses organic/sustainable practices.

Question is with these genetically mutilated organisms that are being developed for human consumption: WHAT ARE THE LONG TERM CONSEQUENCES? What are the subtleties that transpire when one organism digests another organism for sustenance? Response to GAS: Yes, good job explaining this. Eating GMO corn regularly would fall right in there. Round-up has been genetically added to the seed. Round-up is the main ingredient in Agent-Orange. Same companies made Agent Orange that have Genetically Altered Corn, Cotton, Soy , Tomatoes, . Funny thing I read is that the tests other countries have made on these Genetically Modified Organisms hasnt produced the same results that were released by these companies.

llcasey : we are in the thick of it here on Kauai where Sy ngenta and Pioneer (owned by Dow) have 12,000 acres of experimental and seed crops. We are doing our best to boot them off the island. A point of clarification on y our data: R24D is the active ingredient in agent orange, owned by Dow. and y es, it is being developed as the next generation of herbicide ready crops as the weeds are developing a tolerance to Roundup (a Monsanto product)

I am not sure if plowing the crops under is the best idea. I would have thought that burning them would be a safer idea. In fact, Additionally , these fields can no longer considered unadulterated organic fields for a minimum of 7 y ears. I believe all products that are GMOs should be torched to complete cinder. It is the only true way to make sure that future propagation is not possible.

This guy in Canada, see David vs Monsanto, the long almost hour long version, tried to quit GMO Corn. He won part of a law suit against Monsanto which enabled him to force Monsanto to come out to his fields and phy sically dig up the corn plants he could not get rid of.

Dont get me wrong, I love my country but truth is truth. The United Nations has curbed that tendency a bit. The United States does not run the United Nations and being a member country sit back and think a bit before acting. I for one am extremely glad it was founded. The UN organization is just warming up and I am extremely happy to see that these countries are uniting to figure out a way to heal our planet. Hi every one. For some clarification: neither Hungary , nor other country from this part of the world (Im ty ping from Budapest) hates the Americans. Actually , they should hate it more than some people expressed here, but not hate it in the emotional sense, but reject the bad things that are coming from there. This countries Hungary , Romania, Bulgaria, etc. are losing their identities day by day due to globalization. Young people tend to forget completely the traditions and grow up on coke and Disney Channel. Oh, we are not at all underdeveloped. We have all the super-high tech stuff and way of living that y ou have. What politicians do is another aspect, but of course we already know that they are about the same all over the planet. The WWII alliances are long gone and if we were to compare, we would have to ask if y ou hate Germany as wellI know that we have import of corn, flour, garlic, onions, etc, all ty pes of products that are traditionally grown here. I see garlic from China all the time in the supermarket. Of course I get mad. This country is not a melting pot and should not be. The only way to maintain the roots somehow is by rejecting exaggerated melting.

Like I am part Bohemian, Czech, German, English, etc. But it can be likened to loosing the identity of the corn seed. I hear that too. Since what I am hearing on this blog is that most people from every country do not want to eat Genetically Modified Organisms my question goes back to how do we keep these GMOs from contaminating the world? Once the food supply is contaminated it will be extremely hard to get something that is not contaminated. U.S. Organic farmers are having an extremely hard time with try ing to keep the contamination out of their fields. May be we should all can and freeze enough corn that we can burn all the corn fields in the world and start over with good seed.

Im going to be that person and say that, although I dont know exactly how Monsanto modifies their crops or to what end, simply genetically modify ing crops for higher y ield is actually a good thing. In fact, genetic modifications occur naturally all the time. I know there is more to the story than this, but higher crop y ield = less starving people, and were going to need it if we hope to feed the worlds population in 2050. I dont write this to start up more angry replies, but I believe there are two sides to every story , and I dont think the positive spin on GMOs is fairly represented in media today .

Alice, You said y ou dont really know what this is all about and y ou should check it out before y ou give comments. What y ou said is true about natural selection and natural pollination. But makes y ou look like one of those people that likes to post just to see y our name there. You need to read up on Round Up Ready genetically modified seeds. Studies indicate that they cause cancer and other health issues. Not to mention that farmers will no longer be able to save their seeds if they use this product. But also read about who makes the cures for Cancer. It is all about making money and controlling the food supply and is Capitalism in the extreme. Ideas that we definitely need to modify and not believe every thing we see and hear on TV. Not even the news. You cant expect to get accurate news when 3 or 4 people own all the news stations and monitor what news is given i.e. the California issue that was voted on and rejected making labeling of all ingredients mandatory in the State of California. Three day s ago, bowing down to Monsantos well-funded lobby ists, Congress voted to allow Monsanto to grow
GMO crops that could be harmful to human health and the environment even if a federal court or a regulatory agency rules that the planting of those crops is illegal. Under this new law, sneaked in at the last moment as a rider to the federal appropriations bill, not even the federal courts will be able to stop Monsanto from introducing a slew of new, potentially poisonous GMO crops into our food supply . Its just one more reason to pass a statewide GMO labeling law, one with real teeth. This was a news blurp from True Organics. Sorry to be the bearer of this disturbing news. Please support the effort in Washington State. A small chink out of their armour is better than not striking any blows at all. We can blog all night, but he party wont start till we get out there and dance. Take action!

Tks, and agreed, Monsanto and the Biotic dont play fair. I wrote to the President, and Senators, looks like Money talks louder. So Agree, it will be a slug fest through the Country , State to State. Was sorry to see Cali loose. Hopefully Washington State will cut them at the knees. I just want my food labeled, so I can decide, I read labels to determine what is in my food and then decide what Ill buy So how is knowing if its a GMO is any different, it needs to be labeled. The irony to me is Michelle Obamas, Whitehouse lawn Garden and the push by New York cities may or is up about the size of sugary drinks. I see GMOs as more dangerous if y ou consider allergies and these companies inserting genes from different plants and even other species into another plant and then calling it good, and not wanting to inform the customer.

You are getting confused between normal traditional plant breeding techniques and genetic modification. From Wikipedia: a GMO is any living organism that possesses a novel combination of genetic material obtained through the use of modern biotechnology . The operative phrase here is modern biotechnology , this is not what has been done to most crops. Most crops have been the subject of traditional plant breeding techniques. People in the U.S. are just beginning to understand that GMOs are a threat. The process for the deregulation
of GMOs is not understood by the general public. Consumers are try ing to get labels on GM food, but the bigger issue is that these crops are being deregulated in the first place. But I believe the way to bring down the giant will be through patent law. (Im hoping that we will continue to see that GMOs are not useful, and therefore do not deserve to be patented. One stipulation for granting a patent is that the thing for which the patent is sought must be useful. Genetically Modified crops can be a good thing Especially with a global population exploding in number and limited agricultural land to work with. It can create crops more resilient to drought, flooding, temperatures, disease etc.. Not all scientists are mad, cancer causing, sterilizing scientists

I understand the anger that Europeans, Asians and Canadians have for Amerika. Dow Chemical, DuPont and Monsanto have Amerika in common. And Amerikans have in common capitalism, which equals GREED! And thats what leads these corporations to do what they do to raise the value of their shares for all of y ou Amerikans who are their stockholders. Genetically modified food is just the latest of a lengthy history that Amerika has of exploiting the people of the planet. Researchers; look up the United Fruit Company on Wiki to see what one of y our Amerikan companies did to Central America 100 y ears ago.

Daniel: Few Amerikans have shares in any thing. I dont know where y ou got that information, may be from some movie or television show. Remember, those things are usually fiction. In fact, the United States doesnt really have a middle class any more. I read over the week-end that 1/3 of the people in the US are living under the Poverty Level. And, the poverty level is much lower income wise than it was 10 y ears ago. Our government will not let this be widely publicized. Those of us with education even if we are self educated, try to keep companies like Monsanto and Dow from obtaining this level of freedom to hurt. I didnt know any thing about the United Fruit Company and I will look it up. Too many of us have been in sleep mode trusting that our Government would protect us from this kind of thing. What a rude awakening it has been to realize that not only does our government not protect us, the people, but we are also brain washed into believing it is alright for them to do this. And y es, it is because of Greed. But it is not us, the common people that have the shares in stock. It is the rich who arent even going to have to pay their fair share of taxes. It is also why the world needs Internet Hackers like Anony mous and Wiki-Leaks. Thank y ou so much largejack! The genetically altered grains and food that Monsanto and Dow are play ing with will ultimately effect the world. Im guessing from what Ive read here that now one cares what that government just did to the farmers. They arent getting compensated for their loss, its to late in the season to replant, and they may not have known some of the seed was gm. If y ou want no harm done by something y ou dont fully understand, y ou need to make sure others arent being harmed in the process or y ou are just as bad as what y ou are fighting
against.

Money bombards the airwaves with propaganda and lies. I really do want to cry when I realize it is my country I speak of. I used to be so naive. This is not about politics. Well not entirely ! Monsanto does some good work in genetics to make corn from where it normally cant grow. This is a question on how dependant we become to this food source. All of the seed from Monsanto is sterile which means that the farmer is now dependant on Monsanto for seed. I am Canadian and remember when I was a kid having a cob of corn that would melt in y our mouth and so sweet. Genetics has taken that away . May be they can put it back. Stop sterilizing the seeds so the farmer is a little self sufficient.

To Toggle Switch: funny statement, but sadly not far from the truth. Our empire is slowly crumbling from too much consolidation of wealth, too much junk food, and too much TV. We once did great things for mankind, but in the last 2 generations, the only thing I am proud of is the internet and fiber optic technology . Our once great science is now giving us genetically mutilated food and our government for the people is making us eat it by letting corporate power hide it undisclosed in most the food on our grocery shelves. We are even giving it to our babies: try read the ingredients in most baby formulas like Sy n-lac: first ingredient- high fructose corn sy rup, second- sugar (beet), fourth- soy . All GM grown. Then, they rant on Fox news about a health care sy stem that costs 4 trillion a y ear.
