REFRIGER: *% |ATION SERVICE ENGINEERS SOCIETY = HEAT PUMP COURSE ZT] A Heat Pump Compressors CURERDRERORORORD OBJE 1VE! After completing this Lesson, you will be able to: = Explain the primary functions of a compressor in a heat pump system. Discuss and compare the different types of compressors used in heat pump systems. Caloulate the compression ratio of an operating compressor. = List the advantages and disadvantages of the various compressor designs used in heat pumps. = Explain the differences between positive-displacement compressors that ‘xhibit variable compression ratios and those that exhibit fixed compression ratios. = Discuss the reasons for using two-speed compressors in heat pump applications. = Describe the various types of overload protectors used with heat pump compressor motors. = Define synchronous speed and explain how itis calculated {© Copyrigh' 2004 bye Resign Service Engineers Sky. Lesson 4 Heat Pump Compressors Mineo REFRIGERANT CAN BE REUSED OVER AND OVER AGAIN IF IP IS CONDENSED from a vapor back to a liquid. To be condensed, the vapor must be pressurized. It is one of the compressor’s functions to pressurize the refrigerant vapor before it is condensed for reuse (a compressor cannot tolerate liquid refrigerant). Compressors are commonly classified by the method used to compress the refrigerant vapor. There are five basic types of compressors used in the HVACIR industry: = reciprocating = scroll = rotary = screw centrifugal. ‘The last two of these, screw and centrifugal compressors, will not be covered in this Lesson, since they are used only in very large-capacity equipment.
