REFRIGERATION SERVICE ENGINEERS SOCIETY = Heat Pump Principles OcPOROnil CAT ‘After completing this Lesson, you will be able to: * Describe those design considerations that are unique to the manufacture of heat pumps. = Explain the operation of a heat pump system in both the heating and cooling modes. = Read and interpret pressure-enthalpy diagrams used to illustrate the refrigeration cycle. = Discuss the operation of reversing valves used to provide refrigerant flow control in heat pump systems. = Explain the various performance ratings used in the HVACIR industry to describe the operating efficiency of heat pumps. Because of this approach, the first units offered to the public were a constant source of trouble. They failed to produce the required amount of heat and operated at a very high cost. AS a result, heat pumps initially acquired a bad reputation. ‘The industry soon learned that heat pump systems have specific operating parameters that must be addressed in the design of the equipment. Included in these requirements are: "The indoor coil of a heat pump needs more area than the indoor coil of a cooling-only unit does. The additional area helps prevent the condensing temperatures and corresponding head pressures from becoming too high during the heating cycle. "The indoor air volume required for heat pump operation is greater than the volume required for cooling-only applications. The greater indoor 720-208
