Well done Mr. Mitra by Mohd Azad (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:18 AM This is really good to know that Mr. Mitra denied the existence of black hole long time back which even Hawking is admitting today. Talking about black hole is like talking about nothing and you can talk forever on such topic with some assumptions. The irony with Indian(s) scientists is that they don't beleive in publicity or you can say they don't get the right media coverage. Patenting/documenting the information is also a problem. Second biggest problem is the jealousy/ leg pulling attitude among the colleagues. You'll hardly get people who'll support you without worrying about the credit rather they'll leave no stone unturned to stop you continue the good work. Let's hope the Mr. President comes to know about the incident and Mr. Mitra is put back on the research that he was doing ever since Forward | Report abuse

Congrats Mitra by bp (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:07 AM You have made us proud and have given us hope that all is not lost. Now the action -plan needs to be like this 1. The Indian Media should praise this acheivement and make Mitra a celebrity 2. The Stupid babus in the BARC who do not have the scientific attitude of looking at different theories with an open mind should be fired & exiled immediately 3. A science innovation department should b e formed under the ageis of the President of India Dr. APJ AK & Mitra should be made to head that department. the sole purpose of this department should be to publish all the theories by all the scientifically inclined people and work in the direction of making them practical. The motto of this dept should be - THE ONLY STUPID IDEA IS THE ONE THAT DID NOT COME TO YOUR MIND. Forward | Report abuse

An eye-opener by Ramkumar (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:00 AM Very interesting article. On celebrating Hawking's theory its proved that the general rule of the world today, is that it wants sensational news rather than news that makes sense.

Excellent by Natti (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 09:58 AM It is great to know that it was an Indian who opposed Hawkings theory. His work was accepted as he was a highly renowned physicist, and the idea of Abhas Mitra's colleagues ditching him shows the fear that we disply to bring out ideas. If the idea is projected before the scientific community with a solid proof backing it and what is there to fear. Hope Mitra's work is taken as an example and other scientists come out of their shell to bring out their challenges to the scientists from the west. Similarly the greatness of Indian mathematics from Aryabhatta to baudhayana to saayana, who proposed a number of mathematical theoroms, well before the time of pythagoros etc, should be published. This would give indians a sense of pride.

The Indian scientist who took on Hawking by Binu (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 09:57 AM First of congratulations to Abhas Mitra and secondly an apology for being in ignorance of the fact that such groundbreaking work and thought process was underway in our country. Maybe now BARC and the government will do justice by him and honour him as he so rightly deserves. Forward | Report abuse

Abhas Mitra's paper about black holes. by Prakash (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 09:55 AM Nothing surprising considering that most 'scientists' in the Indian academia are more keen on pleasing West than finding the truth. There is a way the Nation can check this. Why not give Abhas a Padmabhushan? I invite all the rediff readers to promote this idea. (Incidentally, I don't know Abhas or any other theoretical physicists). Now that Stephen Hawking himself has debunked the existence of black holes, Indian scientists will be more willing to recognise Abhas. PADMABHUSHAN ABHAS MITRA - I would like to see that happen!

It's heartening and sad . . . by T V S Sarma (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:37 AM It's heartening to notice that an Indian has stood up against the Stephen Hawking and his stand is vindicated. The sad part couldn't have

been avoided since it is the general reaction of the scientific community to any change. Though they say they stand for logical reasoning and progressive thinking, I think these guys are as retrograde as any. The history of science is replete with stories of castigated visionaries. At least Mitra is fortunate that his stand is vindicated in his life time Forward | Report abuse

congrats by Dr. Kishore Saha (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:37 AM Though i am not an astrophysicist, what i felt is that it is a case of jeleousy which is a common phenomenon. The fact that ,even Hawking didnot get back and later presenting the same thing in a conference in which even the review board didnot rivewe the paper earlier because it was a last minute request from the eminent scientist and just going by his figure, they granted permission is again ridiculous. Again I can say that Dr Mitra's work will definitely get the recognition it deserves,i am sure about that. Again India is a country where u find dirty politics at every spheres of life. That is the reason why novelists like Dr. Hargovind Khurana didnot acknowledge his Indian background behind his success. I would congratulate Dr. Mitra for his unparallel effort and would pray to God that he get his appropriate recognition. Its a chance for India to payback. Thanx Dr. Kishore Saha Forward | Report abuse

True and sad plight of Indian scientists by Arya (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:37 AM This instance points out the plight of Indian researchers in India, who are still besotted with the colonial hangover that the British (in general, the west) is always right. Even if a colleague of theirs points out some anomaly in a western theory, this is the reception that they get. Another sad instance is the high-handedness of Arthur Eddington (as pointed out in the article) towards S. Chandrasekhar. Interestingly, this incident has also been pointed out in Hawking's "A Brief History of Time". Moreover, this only underlines the greatness of Einstein who gladly accepted Satyen Bose's theory and translated it (into German) and had it published. Forward | Report abuse

This is the crude truth!! by Daringtowin (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:29 AM Its highly unfortunate especially the treatment metted out to Mr.Mitra. My hearty congratulations to him and though his work didnt get the required recognition it deserved, I am sure it has pulled up many questions in the much believed theory of Black holes and that indeed it is of great pride for all of us that its an Indian who has dared to contradict such an established theory.Hats off to him and I am proud to be an Indian. Three cheers for Mitra by Ramkumar (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:28 AM Dear Indians, This particular bit of news comes as no surprise to me. We Indians are very good at doing science, but sadly, hopeless at recognising the same, especially when it comes from an Indian.Stories of scientists not getting recognition they deserved in our country, but who eventually went out of India to become world-renowed persons is a cliche now. No wonder bright young minds are leaving our country by the minute! Forward | Report abuse

Irony by rajiv sharma (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:26 AM This is an irony that no one is supporting a genius, is it just because he is an Indian, had the same thing told to us by Mr. Hawkings people would have welcomed the same thing. Please guys he is an Indian gutsy genius. Keep going Mr. Mitra we all are with you. Forward | Report abuse

The man of inspiration by jyothirmayam (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:25 AM Dear Sir, First, let me congratulate Dr.Abhas on his REVOLUTINARY thesis that challenged the Hawking's flawed theory and has been eventaully ACCEPTED. It's the same old story that happens at various of points of time in history. But ultimately what triumphs is human endeavor to unravel the truth. Against all odds, the great seekers of truth always challenge the the ignorant majority. For a such a poineering work, he got the treatment that none can forget. It's sad that great scientists often rely upon their own means for path-breaking discoveries. And in this case, BARC has done immense injustice and insult to a poineer. Personally I am proud of being a fellow Indian, whose country has produced such genius. This saga must open the eyes of Indians at large to create conducive atmosphere for research rather than trying stiffle it.All the so-called thinkers/physicists are of no consequence that's amply proved in the case of Dr.Abhas.He is a gem for India. We have so many such poineers, but are we interested to derive benefit from their research? The answer is a DISMAL NO.I,for one, strongly think that the present attitude of ours must change. Ultimately, the tuth prevails! Forward | Report abuse

Mitra Vs Hawking by Coimbatore Krishnan Murali (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:23 AM Mitra's work proves the point that no idea should be rejected just because it challenges some giant. We always see in life, many discarded ideas come back to us with some alienated majesty. Forward | Report abuse

Not every genius is right by Kapil Munjal (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 10:18 AM This is great that someone from India took on Stephen Hawkings but it is a pity instead of finding the reason behind Mitra's theory, we Indians disregarded it. Well, now when Stephen himself has said that his 25 year old theory was wrong, what is expected from Mitra.

I would ask Mitra to work on his findings a little bit more and give his own theory on black holes.

There are quite a few people who dare to challenge such type of theories.

Congratulation Mitra...

Hats off to Mitra by Venkat (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 11:11 AM Hats off to Mitra, Anyone can be wrong in their belief even Prof. Stephan Hawking, If someone like Mitra tries to prove it wrong, encourage it, instead of discouraging him, I urge Mitra's colleagues to accept the fact not just by blindly following someone, you guys are seasoned scientists you must be ashamed of such activity in yourself. Thank you Rediff for bringing this into picture. Good Comparison of Chandrasekar's findings and now Americans are remembring him by giving their telescope his name. Wake up India. He was infact challenged 30 years ago by John Preskill as part of a bet which Stephen Hawking accepted as lost!!

indian science has been mismanaged for over 5 decades ! by r p rammohan (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 11:40 AM Hearty congrats to Abhas Mitra who is the only one scientist in the country who has the courage to question the most admired scientist's understanding about black holes. Those who punished Mitra in BARC should receive maximum possible punishment and probably immediate ouster from their jobs as they are deadly dangerous elements to Indian science. Bossism and bureaucracy in Indian science must be fully killed once and for all for the Indian science to flourish like in no other country. Forward | Report abuse

World needs you by Ujjwal Dubey (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 11:39 AM i'm a layman in physics or astronomy but subjects like blackholes fascinate me. when i first read the title of the article i thought Mitra another one who questioned an eminent personality like hawking just for the sake of publicity. after going through th article i was proven wrong. the world needs minds like Mitra who not only dare to think different but also have the confidence and guts to express it openly. as we have noticed from the history that whosoever propounds something different is first criticized then eventually accepted. this feature has been the part of the game for centuries. and what a fantastic feature of science that every established theory seems to be the ultimate truth until some daring soul questions it. the abstract science of space-time will keep musing generations and generations of intellectual minds... Black holes by Sundar (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 11:20 AM This is not the first time that something like this had happened to people who propose ground breaking theories.. Mitra should remember the ordeal that Galileo went through at the hands of the church and consider him fortunate. I really dont understand when Mitra had invited people to verify his papers, even the Indians declined to do so.Shame on the BARC colleagues of Mitra, atleast they should've supported him on this. When we dont have support within our own system how can we expect the world to support us.This attitude of Indians has reduced to what India is today. It's sad that we are right only when the Westerners think so.I feel very proud to be an Indian to know that an Indian proved the so called great Hawking wrong! controversy vs popularity by ksey (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 12:04 PM Hawkings is a great theoretician. But that shouldn't have been the reason to shun discussion that could disprove his theory. Research is about finding answers and problems, about proving and disproving - fundamental research is never foolproof and I'm sure Hawkings is scientist enough to accept the flaws in his theory. As much as it is hard to get out of the fascinating idea of black holes, theories need to be perfected to be able to explain the many many mysteries of the universe. I hope Dr.Mitra gets the encouragement and facilities he requires to further his work, somewhere in the world where people aren't afraid to 'make success' rather than just follow success. Black Holes !!! by Nag (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 11:48 AM This theory on the existance or non-existance of Black holes is tuly remarkable, And disputing a 30 yr old theory is not easy. Forward | Report abuse The Indian who took on Hawking by CS Muralidhar (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 12:54 PM The fact that intense radiation had been found emanating from all collapsing stars shows that the theory of event horizon is false and pure conjecture. According to yogic science too this is illogical. A sound or thought or energy wave produced remains in the universe of sound, Shabda Brahma, for ever. It can be perceived by the mind on performing dharana on that packet of energy. So a sufficiently subtle mind cannot be blocked from reaching the information under all circumstances. This only means that either destruction of information or having an horizon beyond which nothing, including the yogic mind, cannot penetrate is utterly, not just illogical, but banal. The fact is yogic seers have time and time again shown that it is possible for the self-consciousness to reach dimensions beyond the time-space continuum and experience the unchanging Reality, the Super-Conscious All Knowing state, and return to the self-conscious state. Unfortunately, modern science, bound to the outward sense organs and oblivious of the mind instrument, has to take many many faltering steps to even glimpse the ultimate Reality. Stephen Hawking is an over-rated prodigy of the flawed modern science. Forward | Report abuse

Look East, Indians.. look East!!! by Rajesh Nair (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 12:40 PM This is yet another vindication of the Indian intellect in the areas of pure science. Bravo Abhas Mitra! May his tribe increase!!! While it is a moment of great pride for us Indians and for physics in general, it is a sad relection on the state of our self-esteem wherein we need acknowledgement from the West (read "the White Man") in any sphere of existence whether be it our food, culture, movies, science etc. Any proposition will have 3-dimesions to it viz. "Yes", "No" or "Maybe"..what is deplorable is the lack of discussion on Mr. Mitra's theory and our inability to question set mores and beliefs. I personally believe that it is a function of our conditioning wherein we have been taught to accept, without questioning. This "servile mentatility" leads to the proliferation of "Yes Men" (women still dare to question, very often!)who are scared to be different. However, before much damage is caused let us encourage the budding Mitras in our country to question, to challenge and to fail..so that we can succeed! Cheers! Rajesh Forward | Report abuse

Our scientist are only after one thing - Scouting for talent, stealing & publishing their work as their own,Political mileages & favourism, vendetta, lucrative transfers & balance in actual research. Abhas Mitra has proved the world that Indians are no less in finding the facts around the world. Its a shame other Indian Scientists including BARC criticised him.

Hawking is a pioneer in his work that doesn't mean whatever a expert says is right and you cant question him. It happened when Tesla took Edison,Bell took Elisha. The world will definetely take Abhas Mitra and his works in good terms. It is because of this criticism and discouragement many Indians are leaving India and researching outside in US and UK. I solemnly urge my Indian community - If you cant help or encourage a person leave it,atleast dont hurt him. Congratulations to Abhas Mitra for his success. Baskar Sundaram

abhas mitra's success in solving black hole paradox by Andy Mishra (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 04:36 PM the incident of isolation of Mitra at BARC shows that despite enormous success of Indian scientific community, anything and anyone confronting conventional wisdom is still ostracized and cut out. We are still not ready to challange the world with faith in ourselves. The importance of suspiscion can not be underestimated, and without suspiscion, the creed of science would itseld vanish, but what is required is constructive criticism and not isolation. Mitra's disappointment by rk (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 03:55 PM Mitra shd not feel disappointed as his theory has won over theory of hwakings, does not matter he got due credit or not at that time because we Indians are champoin in avoiding our own talent.we r negative in our behaviour towards natural talent.we never beleive our potential &BARC authorities might have thought how we poor Indians can challenge hwakings who is modern einstein.it was low esteem of BARC which insulted mitra &thus India.shame shd be on MM Joshi&RSS brigade who were in power &never got tired in accusing old Indian system of last 50 years.where jsohi was sleeping when a physicist was getting ignorence?above all joshi himself was physicist &naturally mitra's pity state shows that joshi himself could not understand worth of mitra's work. BJP/RSS will celebrate anything in honour of mitra's victory now? will they block parliament now that Indian scientist was insulted inspite of good work? this shows that no matter who is in power in India scientists cant be taken as first rate at par with international stadard.we indians are not confident enough to feel self esteem because its not taught since childhood.RSS wants false self esteem but ignores present days life stories Forward | Report abuse

Meet the Indian who took on Stephen Hawking by Seshadri (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 02:52 PM Kudos to Abhas Mitra and my sincere congratulations. He is one of those independent thinking people on the lines of Ramanujam, Raman and Chandrashekar etc... Its a shame that BARC HAD to show its fantastic hypocracy and intellectual dishosty along with its penchant for blindly aping the west. I can't imagine colleagues shying away from Mr Mitra, because he questioned Hawkins and proposed a counter proof. Rather than helping Mitra prove/disprove Hawkins, castigating him!! Gosh! It cant get any worse. Can it? God knows how many opportunities and intellectuals we have lost and cost India because of such intellectual dishonesty.

Meet the Indian who took on Stephen Hawking by R. Gopinathan (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 02:40 PM Indians are insuperable in the art of suppressing their own men and insulting great men. This is what immediately came up in my mind. The basic reason for this pathetic condition is our inferiority complex and our traditional mental slavery to the "white skinned masters". The mother of all this nonsensical behaviour is the education we receive right from our schools, followed by the education offered by our universities, the informal education in the form of newspapers, magazines, tv channels, cinema, etc. Especially the communists, the "secularists" and the so-called intelligentsia in our country are the most irresponsible humans the world has ever produced. They take immense pride and pleasure in insulting our indigenous culture and customs. According to them anything Indian is inferior and barbaric. These people can't digest the fact that Indians deserve the right to live with self-respect. They are determined to nip any feeling of selfrespect among our people even when it is a bud.

Mitra and Hawking by B iswarup Banerjee (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 05:29 PM | Hide replies Dear Mr. Mitra, First of all, you should learn the history of General Theory. Black hole solutions of Einstein's equations were found by Schwarzschild long before Hawking was born,as a matter of fact Schwarzscild found the solutions within a year of publication of Einstein's revolutionary paper.Hawking's main contribution is the elucidation of the properties of black hole ( along with Beckenstein) and the discovery that black holes can radiate if quantum mechanical effects are taken into account. This is called Hawking radiation. This is not possible in classical physics. However Hawking radiation has not been so far.Observationally many black holes been found in recent years. So the statement "black holes do not exist" is sheer nonsense! I strongly advise you to learn the theory properly before making absurd claims. I am not surprised that Narlikar and others have not bothered to debate with you. They have more useful things to do. Unfortunately, many Indians want to become famous by putting forward meaningless claims and "challenging" well-established ideas instead of working hard and discovering new phenomena or producing new ideas. -B.Banerjee Forward | Report abuse RE:Mitra and Hawking by Ninad Chitre (View MyPage) on Aug 06, 2004 09:07 PM Dear Mr BB, 1. Which idea you think is well established? 5. >I am not surprised that Narlikar and others have not >bothered to debate with you. They have more useful >things to do. Congratulations to Mankind! by Prashant Baldev (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 09:28 PM That is great stuff. But let us take it as a beginning. People in India who are in power, I mean positions in research organizations should take this as a lesson, a path-breaker, in which it has been demonstrated that there is no such thing as abolute right. Every piece of information should be put to a strict test and that too with an open mind irrespective of the SOURCE which generates such an information. In research studies, too much importance is unduly given to who generates the information which leads to an illogical bias and that is dmaging to the progress of science. Let there be INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM in the world. Such a thing will lead to the development of new concepts which would make mankind move in a desirable direction. Let there be openness. Let us all enjoy this marvellous condition of human society where everybody is given an equal right to think, express and present the ideas and which can be debately on the basis of the intrinsic worth of the information and not pre-judged on the basis of 'achieved' position of the source of information. That will herald the dawn of a new era of human

evolution. GOD BLESS THE HUMAN RACE! Forward | Report abuse

Hope Mr.Mitra gets his due by Lak (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 09:12 PM Why is it that we Indians don't take the work of our own scientists seriously? As it is, we don't have many people doing research in the pure sciences. One way is to establish more world-class research centers, get our curriculum and teaching and evaluating methods upto international standards and encourage corporates to invest in R&D.India has hardly a couple of IITs that are among the top educational institutes (according to a Shanghai-based study). The above-mentioned steps will definitely boost our own belief in our institutes and scholars. Mr.Abhas Mitra must be honoured for his work and I hope the Indian media that devotes so much newsprint to our filmstars and models making it big in the West, drums up international recognition for his work. The mistake of Stephen Hawking... by prime135 (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 08:42 PM Several years ago, when I read his famous book on Black Holes, I had a feeling he was somewhere wrong. I didnt know exactly where. One fundamental mistake Hawking made was a mention in that book that said "This book is an inquiry into the mind of God", which I, honestly, found ludicruous, even if it was meant to be figurative. The mind of God is an entity only if God is treated as personal. And since there are so many personal Gods, which mind is he enquiring into? Otoh, If God is impersonal, where is the mind? Now the Catholic heads should be delighted that Hawking was wrong (in fact whenever science is "wrong", they are happy). I sincerely suggest them to issue a ban on Hawking and his further inquiries into "mind of God". Forward | Report abuse

Regarding the article 'The Indian who took on Hawking' by Deepak Chandan (View MyPage) on Aug 03, 2004 07:21 PM Dear readers I was surprised to see the title. I went into reading it. I was horrified to find that it was mentioned that Abhas Mitra- 'was perhaps the first and the only scientist who had the guts to openly challenge Hawking of Cambridge University who is regarded by many as the modern-day Einstein'. This is completely wrong. The well known American scientist John Preskill was the first person to openly challenge Hawking in 1997, even before Abhas mitra came with his theory. And this fact is known by the entire world, so how come rediff can mislead its readers. One more thing that was wrong was when it was written-'He proved black holes couldn't exist because their formation and existence flouted Einstein's general theory of relativity'. When we study of black holes at the smallest level(not the formation but the existence) then we do not take relativity into much account but consider Quantum Mechanics. At such high densities and at singularity the relativity theory fails. Deepak Forward | Report abuse

Intellectual racism by Vikram (View MyPage) on Aug 04, 2004 01:28 AM Although I personally cannot comment on this case, such instances of academic racism is rampant in most disciplines. A theory not vetted by a Western academic is looked upon with suspicion and if in addition, the theory contradicts that of a Western academic, it is immediately shunned and ridiculed. Another good example of this is with regards to India's ancient history where even now, most western encyclopedias state that the Vedic culture was a result of the invasion/migration of nomadic hordes from Europe inspite of conflicting archaelogical, genetic and literary findings. But this cannot be just the West's fault. Until we start believing and knowing who we are and what we are capable of, this selfflagellating and westward-looking culture will continue. Nothing new by Ashutosh Sharma (View MyPage) on Aug 05, 2004 07:08 PM

Well what happened with This Scientist is nothing new. People have ghosts in their minds and believe in them and see them as real. They frieghten them but still people do not want to defy their existence just because that defies their own beliefs. Black hole might be one such ghost to which the people believing in it become obsessed with. It takes courage to go against widely accepted beliefs. And we salute to this brave man, who did not change his stand even in adversity. Forward | Report abuse

Black Holes by ARTHUR VARGHESE (View MyPage) on Aug 04, 2004 06:04 PM To Mr Mitra It is a paradox of history that we vilify & crucify the person who thinks differently and then elevate them to sainthood. As a layman, who cannot understand the complex equations, I was intensely intrigued by the universe we live in. Everyone who tries to explain the laws which govern it is in the spotlight. And it is a sad fact that people follow the current belief instead of questioning if it is correct. You, Sir, have dared to do what few people do. Forget about the mass of averagers who try to find fault and stone you. They will not accomplish anything and will be thrown into the dustbin of history. Please keep on trying !

My best wishes to him as Bengali and I wish he gets justice. Can we please come out of the BOX THINKING of not being able to show individuality??????????? Hey scholars as well as academicians..........I really feel ashamed to think of such an illogical step taken up by BARC. Anybody listening? Forward | Report abuse
