POEM 2- LIMERICK

I once know a word I forget that means, I am sorry we met and I wIsh you the same It sounds like your name But I havent rememBered It yet

JUSTIFICATION We choose the Limerick poem to be used in our lesson as Limerick always being recognized as humorous poem. This element is vital in inserting the interest of studying language among the young learners. This due to the tendency of them to learn while playing or learn through exploration or first hand activities. When we use humorous type poem, they will find that learning the language is fun thus creating meaningful learning and also train them to learn by themselves as mentioned in Standard Document of Primary School (KSSR). With referring to the above limerick, the sentence structure is simple and short with words being used is high frequency words. As a consequence, the young learners will be able to acquire the language faster and better with progressing understanding because they often come across those words and use them in daily conversation. In addition, most of the words in the limerick meet the need of the word list listed in KSSR and KBSR. Common words such as I, you, we and name are being listed since Year 1. Thus, by using this limerick, we hope to equip the pupils with the vocabulary needed. The above limerick also seems to be applicable for teaching speaking skill for pupils. This is because; the limerick being used reflects the daily conversation. It teaches the children on how to introduce themselves when meet a new friend. Based on the Year 1 learning standard, pupils are aimed to be able to participate in daily conversation by fulfilling several requirements such as introducing oneself, make polite request, thank someone and express a simple apology. Hence, this limerick poem is relevant to meet that target. With the language capability is being equipped, and then the pupils will be able to achieve the Content Standard of KSSR that is able to communicate appropriately in various situation and context with correct grammatical rules. Teachers can also apply this poem in co-relation to Community Language Learning method. In this method, children are given the opportunity to communicate among themselves while the teacher acts as language counselor. Thus, this limerick might be a suitable teaching tool to stimulate conversation skill in children. As they become confident to read the limerick, they will put the attention to use it in their speaking or

extend it to simple daily conversation. This limerick is an example of good starter of lesson to facilitate other conversation skill such as greeting and requesting. Apart of that, the use of limerick in teaching will enable the objective of appreciate and demonstrate understanding of English language literary or creative works for enjoyment as stated in KSSR.
