Construction Resources
GENERAL
Lighting and electrical Lighting and power distribution is carefully controlled by the IHC Intelligent House Control system made by the leading Danish electrical manufacturer, LK. This system combines an elegant solution to problems of unwanted emissions from house wiring with energy saving and a high level of user convenience. All control wiring in the radial circuits is on 24V DC, and the system uses movement sensors to ensure that power and lighting only remain switched on while rooms are occupied. Throughout the building, ttings and lamps have been chosen for a combination of efciency with maximum energy saving. Fine looking Waldmann Delight desk lights use low-energy compact uorescent lamps in non-glare housings to provide working light levels that meet the latest European ergonomic norms. The Concord Torch 75 display ttings use very efcient electronic transformers to give longer lamp life, and tungsten halogen capsules to avoid the waste of discarded glass reectors. On the ground and rst oors, Erco pendant down-lighters are tted with CDM ceramic discharge metal halide lamps, which combine exceptional high efciency and durability with good colour rendering. The Selux Combitrack ttings used throughout combine up-lighting and very exible down-lighting possibilities with efcient hum-free and ickerfree electronic ballasts and the energy saving from operation at 50W instead of 58W.
Heating and solar energy The basement is heated by unobtrusive and very efcient Thermowall in-wall heating systems. The walls radiate gentle warmth which heats you directly, just like sunshine on a frosty day, rather than giving off convected heat and stirring up eddies of dust like conventional radiators. Energy-saving, space-saving and supremely comfortable, this system really has to be experienced to be fully appreciated. The hot water throughout the building and the in-wall heating in the basement are controlled by a state-of-the-art Sandler Energy Centre. This optimises the use of heat from Azur solar panels installed on the roof, from the Tiba woodred boiler in the basement and, for back-up, from the
Viessmann Eurola condensing gas boiler installed alongside it. Low emission, high efciency wood-burning boilers and stoves are one of the Construction Resources specialities, and the basement display includes a British made Osier heat storage stove, which also gives off gentle, healthy radiant heat, like the elegant Swiss Topolino stove in the ground oor reception area. Water conservation They say that every glass of water in London has been drunk seven times before. But if water was more wisely used the Capitals water would have a more recent origin, and water rates would be a lot less. At Construction Resources, rainwater is

collected through WISY lters and supplies all the lowush toilets and most of the urinals in the building. Three waterless urinals have recently been installed in the building. Efcient automatic taps in the hand basins minimise the waste of mains water. The result is a dramatic reduction in the need to draw on mainsfed water. Interior nishes Natural paints are used throughout the building. These are made from traditional ingredients from natural sources, resulting in products that are not only healthy and safe to apply but also ensure a more pleasant indoor living and working environment. A further benet is that natural paints breathe to allow vapour to freely pass through: the building fabric is better protected and future maintenance costs are reduced. Floor coverings Linoleum has been extensively used in the centre and other areas are covered with natural carpet or natural wood ooring. You will nd the beautiful Kirkstone Sea Green Westmoreland slate at the foot of the stairs leading to the basement display area. The seminar room has ax in the ceiling for thermal insulation, clad with Heraklith magnesite-bound woodwool boards ensure good acoustics. The ventilation here is fed by IPS textile ducting instead of the more usual metal. This allows the air to gently lter through. The cloth pipe can be washed to ensure the air circulated in the room remains both fresh and clean. The use of wood Walking through the main door you will immediately be able to share our enthusiasm for the natural beauty of solid timber. It is used in the purposeConstruction Resources
Clay in a variety of forms can also be seen in a number of the large scale construction models in the centre. These unique displays show how natural materials can be used both in new-build and to upgrade existing buildings such as a typical cavity wall house. The construction models incorporate a range of natural insulation materials: ax, wool, wood bre, recycled newspaper, cork, wood and coconut bre all offer renewable alternatives to conventional materials for thermal and acoustic insulation. In conclusion The observant visitor may wonder why some aspects of the building are less ecologically sound. The building is rented on a relatively short lease, not owned, so it was simply not economic to upgrade the relatively poor main fabric. One day it is hoped that the centre may be relocated to a purpose-designed low energy building which makes optimum use of the ecological materials and systems which Construction Resources is promoting.
Natural thermal and acoustic insulation materials incorporated into full-scale models.
made ash counter tops, solid beech furniture, ne chestnut ooring, English oak stair treads and banister rails, ash display stands. Engineered timber for construction also makes good use of a valuable renewable resource. Although not used in the fabric of the building, you will be able to see the exciting new modular construction method featuring Steko blocks. This innovative Swiss-made building system has turned this most traditional of materials into a high tech and very rapid means of building construction that has enormous potential. The Steko room on the top landing also includes different prefabricated timber ceiling modules from Optiholz and Lignotur. Less visible is the high-quality Finnish Kertto ply used in some of the construction models. The use of clay Unred clay is another prominent feature of the centre. Clay is a material ideal for high-comfort, low-energy buildings. Its natural breathing property, absorbing and diffusing water vapour and heat, helps offset swings in humidity and temperature. Clay also absorbs odours and is a highly effective sound insulator. And, not least, it makes for exceptionally attractive surfaces, textures and colours. The versatility, exibility, ease of application and costeffectiveness of clay plasters fundamentally challenge the building industrys insistence on almost universal use of gypsum-based plasters. At Construction Resources you will be able to see the beautiful colours produced by the mixture of clays and sands in Tierrano clay nishes as well as Claytec ne clay plaster and clay board. Make a point of looking closely at the Earth Pavilion on the ground oor, built from unred clay bricks, with Tierrano clay nish.

INSTALLATION
Suboors must be level, sound, smooth and dry, and free from any contaminants which could affect adhesion. Regupol should be unrolled and left in the area to which it is to be applied for a few hours prior to installation, as it stretches slightly when rolled up due to winding tensions. Use a craft knife and straight edge for cutting to size and ensure all edges are butt jointed. Lay the Regupol into the adhesive and press from the centre outwards to exclude air and ensure overall contact with the adhesive. Roll with a 68kg ooring roller from end to end and side to side to ensure contact. After 30 minutes, when the oor has been covered, roll once again. Do not apply loads or move furniture onto the Regupol until the adhesive has fully set.

VITAL 040
Cellulose wool insulation batt ideally suited for timber-frame construction
GENERAL VITAL 040 batts are semi-rigid insulation batts made from oxygen-bleached cellulose and viscose fibres, food grade cellulose based binder, and a pH neutral boron liquid that provides permanent protection against rot and fire. They are manufactured in Finland in a patented manufacturing process which produces 40% more energy than it consumes. VITAL 040 is able to absorb over 20% moisture without losing significantly on thermal performance (7 times more moisture than a mineral wool product of equivalent density). In addition, its excellent specific heat capacity ensures that VITAL 040 not only insulates during the winter, but also prevents summer overheating (2.4 times better than a mineral wool of equivalent density). VITAL 040 is a hygroscopic material. It is therefore able to bind, transfer and release humidity and so regulate the indoor climate. Its use in timber frames constructions will also protect the timbers from moisture, fire, and biological (mould, fungi, bacteria, insects) damage. Structural timbers without preservative treatment Applications can therefore be used. At the end of its useful life VITAL 040 insulation can be recycled or disposed of as compost. ADVANTAGES

GENERAL
Clay is one of the earliest used basic building materials but is now recognised as being a thoroughly modern and convenient building material with outstanding natural properties. The material is ideally suited for high-comfort, low energy buildings. Clays natural breathing property, absorbing and diffusing water vapour and heat, helps offset swings in humidity and temperature. Clay also absorbs odours and is an effective sound insulator. Clay bricks are most often used in internal partition wall construction and cannot be used in loadbearing construction, unless the weight is carried by a timber or steel frame. The bricks are usually plastered with a coat of clay or lime plaster. This product is particularly appropriate in restoration and refurbishment of historic buildings where new materials are required to match existing natural materials. Clay bricks also offer the long term benet in that they can be recycled. Claytec lightweight unred clay bricks are ideal for partitions where thermal insulation is required. Claytec compressed bricks are better used where thermal mass is needed. Claytec products, which are manufactured in Germany, also include clay board, plasters and mortars, and embody experience gained from over 15 years of working with clay on a commercial scale. They are high quality products widely used all over the continent. For bricklaying, light clay mortar is used, which is a mixture of clay and sand. For plaster, Claytec clay plasters are recommended, with either a nish coat of clay plaster and natural paint or Tierrano through colour nish.

Claytec compressed unred clay bricks Height 71mm Length 240mm Width 115mm
GENERAL
These compressed clay bricks are more dense than the Claytec light clay bricks (2DF) bricks, and therefore provide higher thermal mass, as well as good sound insulation. They can be dry stacked within a timber framework or wet laid to form non loadbearing brickwork which can be plastered with a clay plaster or left as fairfaced brickwork. External walls must be rendered. For non loadbearing brickwork light clay mortar is used, which is a mixture of clay and sand. Claytec products, which are manufactured in Germany, also include plasters, clay boards and mortars, and embody experience gained from over 15 years of working with clay on a commercial scale. ThermoCellit blocks
Masonry clay honeycomb insulating blocks
INTRODUCTION ThermoCellit blocks are made from fired clay and have a honeycomb cross-section. An external loadbearing wall can be very rapidly built with a single skin construction that will replace a conventional cavity wall construction - combining the structure, external envelope, moisture protection and insulation in one. All that is needed is for the internal surface to be plastered and the external surface to be given a rendered finish. ADVANTAGES
Easy to plan wall layout Special shapes are available for corners, windows and door openings Easy to use Blocks can be cut No mortar is needed in the vertical joints due to a tongue and grooved edge, reducing mortar use by up to 40%. Very little thermal movement results in less cracking and better building resale values Surface fixings compare favourably with conventional masonry construction The blocks are very strong and have a high impact resistance
The large block size, which allows rapid construction coupled with excellent thermal properties, has ensured the popularity of this type of block on the continent for many years
PRODUCT DATA
ThermoCellit block Height Length Thickness Weight Vapour diffusion resistance, U-value with external render and internal plaster Crushing strength of Thermocellit wall Sound reduction (with render + plaster nishes) Cellit block Height Length Thickness Weight Crushing strength of Cellit wall Sound reduction (plaster both sides) Mortar 30 kg bag (mixed with 10 litres water makes 30 litres wet mortar). Sufficient for 1.00 m of 300 mm wall and 0.80 m of 365 mm wall at 8-12 mm mortar joint thickness.
GENERAL
The large block size, coupled with the fact that cavity wall construction is no longer required to satisfy the Building Regulations, means that buildings can be much more rapidly built. This type of monolithic masonry wall construction has been widely used on the continent for many years. The blocks are laid with a horizontal mortar joint 8-12mm thick using a special light weight mortar, available from Construction Resources. Vertical joints are tongue and grooved and need no mortar. The ThermoCellit range includes special blocks for windows and corners, and lintels. Internal walls can be built with Cellit blocks. Please speak to a product specialist prior to selection of these products.

GENERAL
Clay is one of the earliest used basic building materials and now it is available in board form - making it a thoroughly modern and convenient building material with outstanding natural properties. It is especially suitable for high comfort, low energy buildings. Claytec clay board, which is manufactured in Germany, is a combination of clay, reed and hessian. Clay boards are heavier and thicker than gypsum plasterboards and have outstanding thermal and vapour diffusion properties. The boards can regulate temperature, are able to absorb moisture, and at other times, gently give it off again. Clay also absorbs odours and is an effective sound insulator. Claytec nishing plaster or Tierrano are recommended for giving the clay board a skim coat nish. Claytec products, which include plasters, unred clay bricks and mortars, embody experience gained from over 15 years of working with clay on a commercial scale. They are high quality products widely used all over the continent, and Construction Resources is proud to be introducing them into the UK.
Claytec clayboard is also available in 16 mm thick boards 625 x 625 mm for patching and repairing existing walls. Clay boards can be cut with a jigsaw, using a metal blade. They can be xed with 5mm standard countersunk screws. Boards may be given a clay skim nish or a skim coating of Tierrano.

GENERAL
More and more architects and property owners are no longer satised with any old solution for new housing and industrial construction projects. What they are looking for is individuality, originality, functionality, economy and ecology. With Variotherm heating systems you can create economical, ecological and healthy heating for your living environment. As Variotherm heating systems are highly adaptable and suitable for individual applications, they meet all the requirements of modern architectural planning. Designer warmth in the form of heated walls, focussed warmth in your favourite corner and tiled stoves are real attractions in every at. Our wall heating, baseboard heating and ducted oor heating are equally pretty: pretty inconspicuous. Because in contrast to conventional radiators you hardly notice these heating systems in your living space. Variotherm heating systems do not raise dust like conventional radiators, but generate biologically healthy, horizontally radiated warmth. This warmth is perceived by the body just as pleasantly as the warmth of the sun.
SYSTEMS
for dry wall construction The ideal solution for wood frame constructions, prefabricated homes and attic expansions. Rapidly installed it can be used flexibly and initial and heating costs will not burden your wallet. Variotherm Modular Wall Heating is an absolute flexible system. Only four Modular Panels fulfil almost any building needs. Assembly is quick and easy leaving no big mess. Variotherm Modular Wall Heating combines heating and wall in one and offers ready-touse panels.
for plastered construction work EasyFlex is a high performance wall heating solution for at or curved surface mounting and close pipe spacing (only 77 mm). This means every wall is heated very fast and efciently. EasyFlex is also extremely thin, with a structural height of only 17mm. It is an extremely exible system which offers creative design freedom.
Newly constructed or older buildings it doesnt matter. Variotherm Floor Heating systems can be used anywhere, are installed rapidly and provide superior comfort in living rooms, sanitary and bath rooms, hallways and reception areas. There are three complete systems to suit your specific needs: VarioFix and VarioNop for cast plaster floors and VarioComp for dry floor construction and renovation.

COMFORT
Comfort is not just derived from having the right kind of air temperature in a room. The temperature of all the surfaces which encompass the room is just as important. The physiologically perceived temperature approximately corresponds to the arithmetical mean of the two.
perceived temperature = air temperature + 2 mean surface temperature Cellar 18C Living area 20C Exterior -8C 14C 10C 19C 20C Hall 18C
18C
People feel comfortable when the basic equation of thermal comfort is met: heat generation = heat emission The important factor is that the heat which is emitted by the human body can radiate as uniformly as possible in all directions. If too much heat is withdrawn on one side (cold spots), we perceive this as unpleasant.
Diagram 1
The lower the air temperature in the room (vertical values) is, the warmer the encompassing surfaces (walls, floor, ceiling, together with window and door surfaces) have to be in order to create a cosy atmosphere.

The unfavourable influence of the cold exterior walls and windows (temperature exchange with the body) is for the most part neutralised by locating panel heating in outward facing walls, in particular under windows. The room temperature can be set lower than is the case with convection heating, because the radiated warmth raises the temperature perceived by the occupant of the room, which means that the feeling of comfort is not affected.

For a pleasant ambient climate the humidity (vertical axis, indicated in %) must be in the median area. The air temperature also influences our perception of moisture. Room heating systems provide warmth in two basic ways: By convection and by radiation. The way in which the warmth is transmitted depends very much on the room heating system.

GENERAL
Variotherm wall heating can be found in blocks of ats, family homes, nurseries, schools, hotels, ofces and production facilities - in fact everywhere, where people wish to enjoy the organically healthy radiant heating which these systems produce. How you shape the wall is up to you. From the invisibly integrated wall heating to decorative ledges and cornices, lots of architectural solutions are possible. Variotherm Wall Heating increases the human comfort level considerably. They produce longwaved horizontal infrared radiant heat which provides ultimate comfort, just like warmth from the Sun, which is also radiant heat. Unlike heat from conventional heating systems radiant heat does not travel upwards and dust circulation is avoided. Variotherm Wall Heating is thus ideal for your comfort and provides a healthy room climate. As a large-surface low temperature system Variotherm wall heating uses the ability of walls to store heat, which provides great energy savings and can be ideally combined with all alternative energy systems such as heat pumps, solar installations
COOLING
With Variotherm wall heating you can also create a super ambient climate in summer. How? Simply by letting cold water circulate through your wall heating system. Immediately your wall heating turns into organically healthy wall cooling. Without all the troublesome dust and air which are raised by conventional airconditioning systems. With Variotherm wall cooling you can enjoy a feeling of well-being in summer, which you will otherwise only experience in the natural, cool shade of a mighty tree. The organically harmonious and physically benecial Variotherm wall cooling works as follows: the walls are cooled by the circulation of cold water. The human body automatically emits warmth to the cool walls. As a result heat stored within the body is reduced in a biologically compatible way, and you experience a pleasantly cool sensation. Conventional air-conditioning units use a lot of energy. They have to circulate large amounts of air in order to cool a room. This generates an aggressive kind of cold which can cause a temperature shock when people enter the room. The dust stirred up by the air-conditioned circulating air and the mites it contains are extremely detrimental to health. Instead of cooling the air, Variotherm wall cooling in contrast cools the human body by drawing off its warmth. This is much healthier and also creates a much more pleasant sensation. In ats under the roof Variotherm wall cooling always ensures an ideal ambient climate, even during hot weather. Variotherm wall cooling operates at minimal energy input. It cools not the air but the heat stored in the human body. This is more effective, healthier and considerably cheaper. A long-term comparison has shown that our wall cooling has much lower operating costs than conventional air-conditioning systems.

Variotherm Wall Heating systems increase the human comfort level considerably. They produce longwaved horizontal infrared radiant heat which provides ultimate comfort, just like warmth from the Sun which is also radiant heat. Unlike heat from conventional heating systems radiant heat does not travel upwards meaning dust circulation is avoided. Variotherm Wall Heating is thus ideal for your comfort and provides a healthy room climate. As a large-surface low temperature system Variotherm wall heating uses the ability of walls to store heat, which provides great energy savings and can be ideally combined with all alternative energy systems such as heat pumps, solar installations etc.
Compared to conventional screed floor heatings the faster surface warming of the Compact Floor Heating is clearly visible. Faster surface warming results in a better regulation of the Compact Floor Heating. The surface temperature of the Compact Floor Heating is higher than of conventional screed floor heatings. Therefore more efficient laying of heating surfaces is possible as lower flow temperatures are needed.

USES
Variotherm Ducted Heating is uniquely ideal for large glass fronts in conservatories, verandas and showrooms. The heating element is right next to the glass surface. In addition the openings in the cover grid feed the warm air directly on to the glass surfaces. This creates a veil of warm air in front of the glass surface within minutes and screens out incoming cold.

Wood-fired boilers
Sophisticated boilers are available to heat water for both domestic and commercial installations. They are available in heat outputs from 15kW to 550kW. They feature low pollution using computer control and lambda probes to optimise combustion and have efficiencies up to 90%. They are capable of burning logs, wood-chip and pellets. Woodchip and pellets are automatically fed. Pellet fed systems are as convenient as gas or oil boilers. Contact Construction Resources for further details. To maintain low emissions and high efficiencies the heat produced is fed into a heat store such as the Sandler heat management system. The system provides domestic hot water and space heating. Visit Construction Resources to see one in action.
Cross-section of one of the modern stoves available from Construction Resources with refractory store and long flame path.
Installation
Modern wood-fired ceramic stoves are easy to install. They are accurately made and easy to assemble or even reassemble in a different location.
And finally...
For your safety, permanent ventilation is required for woodfired systems and flues should be designed and installed in compliance with the Building Regulations. Where very high levels of air tightness of the building are required by Building Regulation or by specification, we suggest the use of direct air supply options as available for these stoves. In order to enjoy the best of your wood-fired stove we recommend that you use dry timber with a moisture content below 20%. Unseasoned timber takes a minimum of two years to dry sufficiently in a dry store. The timber should be free of preservatives, paint or galvanised nails. Little ash is produced by these wood-fired stoves, the little that is should be disposed of safely.

Topolino
An elegant wood-burning stove
OVERVIEW The Topolino heat storage stove uses new material technology to achieve a fuel efficiency of 86%. It can serve as the sole heat source in low-energy houses, or as an additional heat source elsewhere. Its low-emission combustion is environmentally friendly and the stove is manufactured from mainly recycled materials. ADVANTAGES
Wood is a renewable fuel Easy to use - single handle control High capacity heat storage Over two thirds of the heat is taken up by cermaic elements Heat is discharged slowly and continually Maximum output of 1.8kW after only 90 minutes Overall efficiency 83% Simple modular construction Fast, simple and low-cost installation Can be disassembled and moved
GENERAL
The Swiss design team GAAN set itself a target of creating a small ceramic wood-fired stove which optimises performance with a stylish appearance. The result, the Topolino, offers a comfortable living climate through ingenious design and use of modern materials, while at the same time minimising pollution. The stove needs only 6kg of wooden logs that burn down in 11/2 hours, but continues to heat the room for 12 to 18 hours. The free-standing storage stove is always fired at full load. More than two thirds of the heat is stored in heat storage elements, which dissipate the heat slowly and continuously. The operation is controlled with a twist of the handle. The Topolino is manufactured from mainly recycled materials. The elegantly curved side elements are made from recycled porcelain. The front white element is made of fused alumina, which has an exceptional heat capacity and conductivity. The Topolino reaches its maximum output of 1.8 kW (6,000 BTU/h) after just 90 minutes. The output then reduces slowly but is still 0.5 kW (1,700 BTU/h) after 12 hours. Depending on the building insulation quality, Topolino can heat a room volume of 80 to 200 m (2,800 to 7,200 ft3). During the firing phase, 10% of the energy quickly heats up the room; then 66% of the accumulated heat is released slowly from the storage elements over a period of 18 hours. The overall efficiency is 83%. Because of the modular assembly, the stove can be quickly and easily assembled. At a future date, the stove can be dismantled and relocated. After years of trouble-free use worn parts in the firebox can be easily replaced by the owners.
The Topolino wood stove not only looks good but is a very efficient form of heating

T-ONE
Stylish and compact, low pollution wood-burning stove
OVERVIEW The T-ONE stove is designed for the modern home. Its novel design allows the logs to burn from top to bottom ensuring low pollution from a long lasting flame. The ceramic stove has a large frameless glass door that shows off the fire to its best advantage. A modern design from a Swiss company established 125 years ago. ADVANTAGES
Wood is a renewable fuel Easy to use - single handle control High capacity heat storage Over two thirds of the heat is taken up by cermaic elements Heat is discharged slowly and continually Overall efficiency 80% Simple modular construction The patented frameless glass door is very easy to clean Designed with child safety in mind
GENERAL
The best ideas are often incredibly simple. Like the T-ONE. Here the logs are placed upright and lit from the top. The wood burns from top to bottom, like a candle, achieving the most efficient combusiton with exceptionally low emissions. The large glass window means that the room warms up quickly and allows you to enjoy watching the very special burning process, which lasts about 90 minutes. T-ONE SWING The unique and simple design of the T-ONE SWING gives it a timeless elegance. However, this stove is not just attractive to look at; it is impressive even in small spaces. The stove cladding is moulded from cast artificial stone and ceramics. The surface is painstakingly finished by hand to give the texture of your choice: polished or rough. You can choose both colour and material to suit your home environment - modern or more rustic, as you prefer. And thanks to its sophisticated option, the rotating pedestal, the T-ONE SWING can even be set up so that you always have the best possible view of the fire. T-ONE STONE The straight, Cubist design of the T-ONE STONE appeals to lovers of the Modernist style. Its compact size means that there is room for this stove even in the tightest of corners. Clad in soapstone or other polished natural stone, the T-ONE STONE always creates a refined and elegant impression. The newest cladding option, a textured concrete look, is really unique.
The T-One wood stove combines elegant design and effecient heating technology
What makes it really special, however, is the T-BAKE option, an ingenious baking unit designed to transform your stove into a gourmet oven. One load of logs will then keep you snug and warm for over six hours whilst also allowing you to bake bread, pizza or cake at the same time - filling your lounge with healthy, radiant heat and the delicious smell of fresh, homecooked food. Whichever T-ONE you decide on, you will be the owner of a stove where design and functionality are perfectly combined. The fire looks particularly effective seen through the frameless door, made entirely of glass. But at the same time, the door cannot easily be opened by small children, because the handle is at the top. Using the T-ONE is incredibly easy: load it with wood, open the sliding air vent, light the logs at the top, close the door - and enjoy the fire. The wood burns cleanly and creates little ash. The practical ash container can be emptied in a moment.

The FW modules are pretested making design and build simple and performance is guaranteed. The system is future proof.
Heat can be taken from solar thermal collectors, heat pumps, district heating and conventional boilers - priority is given to renewable sources. Both low and high temperature emitters are controlled as standard. The systemt optimises the charging of a thermal buffer which avoids the pollution and wear and tear of short cycling boilers. Energy monitoring and system diagnostics are available as options with a modem link. For larger buildings, e.g. offices, schools, hotels and factories, the Sandler 020 is the system of choice.
Sandler FW system showing one of many installations: domestic hot water, low temperature heating, a solar thermal array, a boiler and Sandler STB
The Sandler STB stratifying thermal buffer: reliable and safe, makes most efcient use of your fuel. The patented twin-pipe system makes sure that water can be stored at three different temperatures at the same time in one tank. Instant domestic hot water at mains pressure The FWS system is easily upgradeable as your building and heating requirements change over time. It allows you to add different heat sources easily. The control display and keyboard: Clear and simple. With only four keys you have control over your complete heating system. The FW unit controls the heating circuit module that includes the mixer valve. Two different heating temperatures are catered for as standard e.g. 30-45C for in-wall or underoor heating, 50-80C for radiators, all can be connected. But take note: The lower the system temperature, the more economically the system runs. In-wall heating: A healthy and comfortable room climate. Fast reaction, pleasant radiant heat.
The solar collector AZUR: For hot water and heating. Quality and superb performance at a fair price.
Pumps and valves are included in each heat source module and controlled intelligently by the FW unit.
The Sandler STB Stratifying Thermal Buffer optimises the storage of heat with a patented system. It allows short bursts of heat from inputs such as solar collectors to be stored without the reduction in temperature that would otherwise occur. In a conventional cylinder a small amount of hot water would lose its temperature when added to a larger volume of warm water. The top third stores water heated to a high temperature for domestic hot water. The middle stores water at a medium temperature for space heating. Excess heat from the boiler and solar collectors arrives at the top and steadily permeates down through the cylinder. Rapid reaction time to meet heat requirements High thermal capacity to store excess solar energy Water is not disturbed, and remains stratified Several buffer tanks may be linked in parallel No moving parts to wear out Durable and reliabile over ten years of installations Optimised for the FW system
The Domestic Hot Water module has options for secondary circulation: It runs only when it makes sense.
The inlet construction avoids turbulence and the mixing of cold and hot water. The stratication remains stable even at high
Your heat source can include gas, oil, solar thermal or wood red boiler, heat pump, district heat, the FW has modules to allow virtually any kind of heat source to be connected.
The Sandler is a complete heating and hot water system. It optimises your heating system and buffer heat store allowing multiple heat sources to be combined. The controller prioritises renewable energy and reduces the effect of Climate Change Levy. Domestic hot water is heated instantly and at constant temperature. Flow rates of 20, 30 & 40 (l/min) are available as standard with higher ones to order. The system optimises energy use saving 10-16% in the production and distribution of DHW with existing boilers. By providing hot water safely at 50C instead of 60C as usual, the energy savings increase to 20-25%. To get the best out of the controller we recommend using the Sandler STB Buffer.

GENERAL
Solar heated domestic hot water is generated instantly without the need for storage. It is supplied at mains pressure and at a constant temperature to the point of use. The water temperature can be easily set to suit your need. By supplying at 55C, a lower temperatures than usual, the amount of heat supplied by the solar thermal collectors is increased. The M2 display panel is user and installer friendly. It shows when the solar collectors are in operation and displays how much solar energy is being harvested for heating hot water. The controller reduces the use of the boiler to a minimum. The substantial level of insulation over the store and heat exchanger ensures that heat is kept inside the cylinder instead of heating a home an important consideration in modern well-insulated homes. The secondary return option reduces the waste of electrical energy in pumping hot water where there are long lengths of pipework.

GENERAL
The Sandler 014-2 is an energy management system that integrates conventional and renewable heat sources. It provides energy efcient space heating and low loss instant Domestic Hot Water using prefabricated heating and hot water modules. When you open your hot water taps, cold water from the mains ows through a fast-responding plate heat exchanger. At the same time, heated water from the top of the buffer is pumped through the other side of the heat exchanger. The cold water heats up instantly and avoids the waste of water. Hot water modules are available to suit high water demands of 20, 30, 40 & 50 l/min. Where higher water supplies are required, e.g 600 l/min at constant temperature, the Sandler 018 system should be considered. The O14-2 system controller is virtually future proof, allowing solar thermal systems, advanced wood-red boilers or CHP to be added to conventional boilers at any time. The Sandler Stratifying Thermal buffer allows boilers to run at their peak efciencies for longer. The controller is self-learning and allows the buffer to hold the minimum amount of heat to produce the required Domestic Hot Water. By soaking up heat that is not immediately required by a heating system, energy efciency is improved. Stored heat is then released into the heating system when required. The pollution and reliability of boilers is improved by reducing the number of boiler start-ups. The design ensures that even small amounts of renewable heat keep their temperature at the top of the buffer without being diluted by the volume of the buffer.
ADVANTAGES

GENERAL
At the SPF solar test institute in Rapperswil, Switzerland, where over 200 different solar collector have been tested, the Azur achieved exceptional results both for efficiency and for durability. Although it is a glazed flat plate collector, its performance almost reaches that of vacuum tube collectors, but its price is far lower. At the heart of the Swiss made Azur is the ES stainless steel absorber, available unglazed as the ES Solar Roof, also stocked by Construction Resources. The dimpled surface of the absorber is covered with a durable black selective coating that converts solar radiation into heat very efficiently, but does not re-radiate the heat. The absorber is made of two sheets of high quality stainless steel, ensuring a long lifetime. A water and antifreeze mixture flows between the two sheets, irrigating the whole sheet area. Due to the absorbers stamping pattern of top and bottom plates the liquid flows turbulently, which results in a very good heat transfer. Further features include low iron solar glass, strong aluminium frame and the ozone and UV-resistant EPDMseals. The matching accessories allow a great versatility in the installation. Purpose made brackets allow the Azur to installed onto flat surfaces or walls, with brackets above the tiles on pitched roofs or integrated into the roof covering - a particularly aesthetic option. Turnkey solar thermal systems are available. From two Azur collectors upward, any number can be combined to provide a desired system size. It is possible to install them as a complete glazed solar roof cover as a replacement for tiles. Thousands of installations - from two bedroom houses to large blocks of flats, office blocks to public buildings such as schools, hospitals and old peoples homes have proved the exceptional performance and popularity of the Azur.

ES Solar Roof
A roof that is also a solar collector
OVERVIEW The ES Solar Roof turns a roof into an efficient solar collector for hot water, space heating or swimming pool heating supplying between 300 & 600kWh/m energy per year. It simply replaces the tiles, slates or other roof coverings with a series of unglazed collector plates connected by sealed joints. The ES Solar Roof can be installed on both low pitched and curved roofs, allowing great architectural design flexibility.
ADVANTAGES
The ES Solar Roof is simple and fast to install It fulfills all the requirements of a standard roof It is aesthetically appealing Strong, durable and high quality materials Lightweight construction Highly efficient - Performance exceptional at low pitches, the same at 5 as at 30 Less expensive than glazed solar panels For domestic, commercial and industrial buildings
The ES Solar Roof is ideal in public, commercial and industrial building applications. Here showing its use in the sports facilities of Great Notley Discovery Centre, Essex (photo Sue Barr)
GENERAL
The ES Solar Roof is an attractive alternative to more conventional discrete solar panels and turns the whole roof into a solar collector. It integrates renewable energy into the architecture of a building -harvesting between 300 and 600kWh/m of thermal energy per year and so reducing the burden of Climate Change levies. While being less efficient than glazed solar panels for high temperatures, the capital cost is also much lower, and so for many applications this solution may be preferable. It is ideal where a larger roof area for solar collection is available and especially at low roof pitches. The ES absorber is made of two sheets of high quality stainless steel, ensuring a long lifetime. A water and antifreeze mixture flows between the two sheets, irrigating the whole sheet area. Due to the absorbers pattern of offset metal pads the liquid flows turbulently resulting in excellent heat transfer. The dimpled surface of the absorber is covered with a durable black coating that converts solar radiation into heat very efficiently, but does not re-radiate the heat. The heat can be applied to any form of domestic, commercial and process use including hot water, swimming pool or even space heating. The fact that the ES Solar Roof can be curved gives great architectural design freedom. The flexible system allows for installations ranging from 20 to 1000m and more.
The ES Solar Roof can adopt fluid, curved architectural forms, as shown here on display at Construction Resources.

Rainwater harvesting
How to save 50% on metered water costs
The UK practice of using mains water to supply all our water needs is needlessly wasteful, both nancially and environmentally. Mains water is expensively puried to drinking water standards - but much of the water is used for non-potable purposes, like ushing toilets, cleaning and gardening. Harvested rainwater can be substituted for mains water, saving money and contributing to the protection of a key natural resource. The idea of collecting rainwater has been around for thousands of years. Archaeologists have found that rainwater harvesting systems were being used in the Negev desert 4000 years ago. In Ancient Rome villas had their own individual cisterns and the rainwater was collected from paved courtyards which made them less reliant on the supply fed by the citys aquaducts. Today around the world rainwater harvesting is enjoying a renaissance and systems are being extensively installed for domestic, commercial and industrial use. In the UK the subject is being given a higher degree of priority now that mains water metering is becoming standard on newly built homes and for commercial and industrial applications. In the home most people turn on a tap without any real thought of what is involved. The water is conveniently dispensed, and just minutes or split seconds later it disappears down the plug hole. It then embarks on a journey that may be several miles long before it can be cleaned and treated with chemicals before reappearing at the tap. This cycle is not only illogical but is polluting and wasteful. Treated water is an expensive resource and so using free rainwater instead wherever possible makes sound ecological sense. It is possible to collect 1700 litres of rain off a typical roof of 100 m for every 25 mm of rainfall. For a typical 640 mm of rain a year in the South East and Midlands, 120 litres a day can be collected. In the wetter West and North, the same roof will give over 200 litres a day. the importance of a plentiful supply of water, and that plants prefer natural rainwater instead of heavily treated mains water. A hosepipe uses a minimum of 500 litres an hour - almost as much as an average household uses in a day. Rainwater can also be used for car washing and other general cleaning tasks around the home. supply individual components or complete systems for collecting, ltering, storing and distributing rainwater. The systems are simple to install in new buildings and need only minimal maintenance by the user. The key component in the Construction Resources rainwater harvesting systems is a simple, largely selfcleaning WISY lter. This lters and diverts rainwater from the downpipe to a storage tank. The ne mesh inside the lter, with a gauge of 0.28 mm, captures up to 90% of the rainwater from the roof while the remaining 10% drops straight through, carrying leaves and other debris from the roof and gutters to the drains. The lter design ensures that there is no risk of contamination and minimal chance of blockage.
Rainwater is particularly useful to supply the large volume of water needed for ushing toilets. Each person on average uses almost 45 litres a day for this purpose. In an average household, this contaminates nearly 66,000 litres of drinking water a year. This is the main use of water in a household, closely followed by bathing and washing which uses 37 litres per person per day. Rainwater is ideal for use in washing machines; on average people use 20 litres a day for washing clothes. The advantage is that the soft rainwater allows the use of natural soaps and biological washing powders, which are much more gentle on clothes than standard detergents. Not only this, there is less chance of skin irritation caused by detergents, and there is no environmental damage when discharged into the waste water system. Gardeners through the centuries have recognised
The use of rainwater can really come into its own in business and industry. Not only is water extensively used in a wide range of tasks, but there are often large roof and hard standing areas to catch rainwater. This provides an incentive to invest in rainwater harvesting equipment as business use can offer a relatively short pay-back period. Rainwater can be used costeffectively for water-intensive tasks such as dust control, cleaning processes during manufacture, washing vehicles and other specialised cleaning processes such as printed circuit board manufacture, and in agriculture and animal husbandry where farmyards and animal stalls must be regularly hosed down. In large ofces and public buildings, rainwater can be used for ushing toilets and urinals and for cleaning. Facilities managers are increasingly not only insisting these systems are installed on new buildings but looking to retro-tting the equipment to existing buildings.

The lter is available in two models: one replaces a section of the rainwater downpipe; the other is placed underground and integrated into the rainwater drainage system. Since their invention in Germany in 1989, WISY lters have been successfully installed in hundreds of thousands of buildings. There are areas where including a rainwater harvesting system as standard in new houses has become the rule rather than the exception and indeed it is a legal requirement in The State of Hessen in Germany. Once collected, ltered rainwater needs to be stored in cool and dark conditions to discourage growth of algae and bacteria. A concrete rainwater tank, buried underground, is ideal. Alternatively, recycled polyethylene rainwater tanks, with capacities from 650 to 12,800 litres can be supplied, to be sited in a cool basement or cellar. Several tanks can be linked together in larger installations, such as hotels, public or industrial buildings. Construction Resources supplies a range of storage tanks to meet most needs. The rainwater harvesting system includes the Multigo submersible pressure pump which is usually sited inside the tank. It is of exceptionally high quality, is almost noiseless in operation, and only operates when an automatic switch detects a pressure change when a tap is turned on.
Other components include : . The WISY Floating Suction Filter that ensures that water is not drawn off from the bottom of the tank where very ne sediment may gradually collect. Automatic mains backup systems to ensure water is always available even in time of low rainfall. Overows which incorporate anti-rodent and anti- surcharge protection Anti-turbulence inow lter which prevents the stirring up of the settled sediment in the tank reinforced rubber suction and ressure hoses
The components are simple but high-precision, reliable, durable, and easy to install and maintain. Visitors to our centre in Southwark can not only see the components needed but will see that we practice what we preach; a rainwater harvesting system supplies our own buildings needs. The Environment Agency estimates that the growth in water demand in the UK until 2011 will be the result of 20% from population growth, 40% due to increased consumption and 40% from leakages. But there are positive signs that the Government plans to attack the issue of conserving water resources.
In a recent consultation document, Opportunities for Change, readers are asked their views on whether there should be regulation to encourage water recycling in buildings. All the logic would suggest that the answer should be Yes! So installing rainwater systems ahead of regulation could save the extra expense in retro-tting, keep water meter assessed bills to the minimum, and make an important contribution towards protecting the environment.

The simple but high precision WISY lter uses surface tension in conjunction with a ne stainless steel lter mesh to exclude most particles. The ltered rainwater is therefore very low in organic matter and can be stored for many months, if necessary, with no deterioration in water quality. The Vortex Underground Filter is installed underground to handle the water from a number of downpipes, becoming an integral part of the rainwater drainage system. It meets all the requirements of DIN 1986. The Vortex comes with a 500 mm extension piece to suit invert levels found on most site conditions. Extra extension pieces can be ordered separately if necessary. The lter housing and extension piece are made from environmentally compatible polypropylene and can take the weight of a 12 tonne truck (i.e a direct loading of 3 tonnes). Since their invention in Germany in 1989, WISY lters have been successfully installed in over 100,000 homes. A rainwater harvesting system is increasingly becoming a standard feature in many new homes on the continent. The standard Vortex has 3 separate sections. The rainwater inlet, ltered water outlet and drain outlet can be positioned at any angle to each other thus allowing total exibility of positioning of drainage runs. The rainwater inlet on the small Vortex can be changed to any position. The ltered water outlet and drain outlet are xed at 180 degrees to each other.

Multigo pumps are multiple stage pumps, and are available in four different capacities, making them suitable for any size rainwater harvesting system. The pumps are normally submerged in the rainwater storage tank itself, making them virtually inaudible. The pumps can be placed at depths of up to 20m. A oating ne suction lter prevents the pump from sucking up sediment. The water cooling jacket makes it possible to install this submersible pump dry, outside the storage tank, if required.
The switch assembly includes an integrated non-return valve to maintain pressure, an isolating valve, a pressure gauge and a stainless steel mounting bracket. It ensures safe and reliable operation of the pump under electronic control, automatically and silently regulating the ow of water. It also protects the pump from running dry and eliminates water hammer. Illuminated diodes indicate the state of the system.

Waterless urinal
Low maintenance, economical water saving system
INTRODUCTION A special fluid held in the trap of the Waterless urinal allows urine to pass through but continuously seals the drainage from the atmosphere, preventing any odours from emerging. The absence of water flushing saves substantial volumes of water while the easy-clean design and lack of mechanical components significantly cuts maintenance. ADVANTAGES
No water consumption or associated costs Low cleaning cost No moving parts or ushing mechanism to go wrong Simple and easy installation No water supply pipes or worries about freezing Odour-free clean environment Bacteria free, due to absence of water No limescale or clogging of pipes Vandal-resistant Simple to retrot Minimal maintenance
GENERAL
There are approximately 1.55 million installed urinals in the UK, each using an average of 6 to 10 litres to ush, accounting for hundreds of millions of cubic metres of water being used. Since the introduction of Waterless Urinals many organisations, large and small, are realising the signicant benets and nancial savings that this new technology brings. The Waterless Urinal system does not need any water at all due to its unique syphonic operation and yet this does not compromise hygiene or usage. The surface of the glassbre urinal is a pore-free and smoother than glass. It is coated with a urine-repellent gel coat which ensures the immediate draining of urine into a trap cartridge. The special biodegradable uid held in the trap prevents odours from emerging and allows urine to pass freely through. This uid only needs to be changed two to four times a year, depending on usage. The Sealtrap cartridge, which holds the uid, is changed in a rapid operation using a tool supplied in the package. The urinal bowl, available in a range of colours, is made of vandal-resistant breglass. The minimal plumbing and price of the Waterless Urinal system compares favourably with conventional ush systems. It is a simple operation to retrot and replace existing ushing urinals. The savings in maintenance and metered water is where the system really comes into a class of its own. In cities with the highest sewer and water rates, users can achieve dramatic savings by installing waterless urinals. In high trafc locations, savings of more than 1000 per urinal a year can be achieved.
The Sealtrap cartridge, a patented, one-piece device that acts as filter, sealant, and deoderizer in the urinal

paints as an alternative to their toxic ranges but these actually contain more chemicals than the oil based type they are intended to replace. Several components of water based paints evaporate for a long time after painting, and some may affect human physiology. Vinyl resins, such as those found in conventional emulsion wall paints can damage lungs, liver and blood, are skin irritants and possible carcinogens.
A natural alternative
Over the past decade serious questions have been asked as to the effect that conventional paints have on the human physiology. In 1989 the World Health Organisations International Agency for Research on Cancer reported that painting as an occupation is carcinogenic. This, amongst other ndings, forced major change in the coatings industry which led to the introduction and development of many of the paints supplied by Construction Resources.
By using surface coatings such as wall emulsions, gloss paints and varnishes whose ingredients are more natural many problems such as excessive static and synthetic chemical off-gassing, and the associated noxious smells, can be eliminated leading to healthier, cleaner living. Paints are principally made from four distinct ingredient types: pigment, binder, solvent and drier. But due to the chemical complexities of modern petrochemical paints they will also include defoamers, stabilisers, preservatives and sundry other chemicals many of whose effect on our health is unknown. The principal ingredient of natural paints is linseed oil which, in its various forms, acts as a very stable, long lasting alternative to todays plastic binders. It has been used in paint making for centuries, though there is now a highly developed modern industry based on considerable investment and research that now ensures excellent painting properties. Linseed oil is made by crushing the seeds from the fully renewable crop, ax, it then is blended together with various other natural oils, resins and pigments to
produce modern, scientically designed surface coatings based on natural rather than synthetic ingredients. Tried and tested for years these paints show that surface coatings technology of today has reached new levels.
trees and plants use to nourish and protect themselves from rot and insect attack. When used in various wood priming products, they penetrate deep within the timber bres, giving new timber long lasting, deep protection. Old greyed timber will be rejuvenated by replacing oils lost through weathering. They can also increase the bond between the paint and the substrate by softening and merging with the resins already present in the timber. By lling the pores in the timber with oil there is also less room for water vapour to accumulate and, in the unlikely event of vapour being trapped, it can diffuse through the microporous coating as it expands.
Up to 90% of the internal surface area of a building may be covered with a synthetic petrochemical covering. Studies have shown that the indoor environment is now up to ten times more polluted than the external environment and yet we can spend up to 80% of our lives inside buildings. Sick Building Syndrome results from a combination of the use of synthetic paints, toxic emissions from furniture and carpets, poor air quality due to defective air conditioning and lighting. Companies occupying aficted ofces note a higher incidence
The oils and resins used in natural paints are those same oils and resins which living
rstly most linseed oil based paints are not fully hardened for years with the advantage of staying exible longer, expanding and contracting with the timber as atmospheric conditions change. This

reduces the risk of the coating cracking, which would result in the timber becoming exposed to the elements. Secondly, linseed oil has excellent levelling properties as it is given time to settle out, drying to a smooth, enamel like lm, free from brush marks, essential for high quality decorative work.
Dust can also be a problem for allergy sufferers; many petrochemical paints, such as vinyl emulsions, use plastic based binders that become statically charged and, much like a vinyl music record, painted surfaces attract dust. Natural paints do not suffer in the same way and so reduce this build up of dust levels within a building.
pollution results. Since natural raw materials are used both the nal products and manufacturing waste are biodegradable. Thought is also given to the packaging used, and naturally, this is also recyclable. In stark contrast some petrochemical paints are notoriously wasteful producing up to ten times their own weight in waste i.e. for each 1 tonne of paint 10 tonnes of toxic waste is created, this can rise to as high as 30 tonnes of waste for some speciality paints. All our products are well proven in practice, easy to use, and remain in harmony with both the natural and human environment, by being safe to produce, use and live with. Natural paints are made on a smaller scale and may cost more than their toxic equivalent, however many of the products at Construction Resources closely match prices of petrochemical paints whilst some, especially the wall paints can actually work out cheaper.
Professional decorators are, by the very nature of their profession exposed to far greater concentrations of toxic chemicals than the rest of us. Worryingly, the World Health Organisation International Agency for Research Cancer, has deemed painting and decorating, as an occupation, carcinogenic, with painters facing a 40% increased chance of contracting cancer. In Denmark, Painters Dementia or Solvent Dementia, is a recognised industrial disease caused by excessive exposure to solvents and other chemicals. In Britain, allergies and chemical tolerance problems are on the increase and have doubled in the last ten years.
Natural paints use either fully renewable raw materials such as oil of turpentine, produced by distilling the resinous sap from living pine trees, or materials which are in plentiful supply; such as clay or chalk. This results in products that disrupt the eco-system as little as possible, while not using valuable and nite resources such as crude oil. Manufacturers of natural paints take all aspects of the environment seriously and they keep all energy use, waste and pollution to a minimum. By reduced processing of the ingredients, less energy is used and less waste and

GENERAL
Clay is one of the earliest used basic building materials but is now recognised as a thoroughly modern and convenient building material with outstanding natural properties. Construction Resources is proud to introduce Tierrano, a product that is widely used all over the continent. There is nothing else like it on the market. The rough textured and subtle coloured nish is quite unique. It has the big advantage that both colour and textured nish are completed in one operation. The product is best used as a nishing coat and is mixed with water. The ve basic colours - Delphi white, Iquito green, Djenne earth (red), Roman ochre (yellow) and Gomera Grey - can be blended to produce a very broad palette, and give considerable scope for creative application and stunning interiors. It is supplied in 25 kg bags, with 40 bags to a pallet. An experienced plasterer can cover about 250 m from one pallet, depending on the surface being plastered. It is suitable for use on all absorbent and prepared interior surfaces such as plasterboard, concrete, brickwork, blockwork or plaster. However, with the exception of the clay plaster undercoat, all other surfaces need to have the Tierrano Contact applied before using Tierrano. The nished Tierrano surface can have a rough texture or a smoother texture. It is not suitable for external use. Tierrano is easy to maintain and repair. Even years later, scuffed or damaged areas can be simply restored to a pristine state by dampening and repatching or by dampening and wiping the affected area with a sponge. So the imperfections or damage can be invisibly repaired. Jobs, such as chasing in a new electrical conduit, become much simpler tasks and leave little, if any, trace of having been done. Please speak to a product specialist prior to selection of this product.

Clay plasters
A practical alternative to gypsum based plasters
INTRODUCTION The versatility, flexibility, ease of application and costeffectiveness of clay plasters makes them a practical alternative to gypsum based plasters. Clay plaster has excellent properties of regulating both temperature and humidity, making it ideal for breathing constructions. Clay plaster also has the major advantage that it can be reworked at any time in the future. ADVANTAGES
Clay plaster can take picture hooks, wallpaper and paints Clay surfaces are cool in summer and warm in winter Clay surfaces absorb and diffuse water vapour Clay absorbs odours Ideally suited for high comfort, modern buildings and historic building refurbishment Clay plaster can be reworked at any time Clay plasters are 100% natural
Construction Resources stocks a wide range of clay products which are displayed on the ground floor around the Earth Pavilion.
GENERAL
Clay is one of the earliest used basic building materials but is now recognised as being a thoroughly modern and convenient building material with outstanding natural properties. Clay is ideally suited for highcomfort, low-energy buildings. Clays natural breathing property of absorbing and diffusing water vapour and heat, helps offset swings in humidity and temperature. Clay also absorbs odours and is an effective sound insulator. The plasters are made by Claytec, are available from coarse to ne, and produce surfaces with beautiful texture and colour, whether left unnished or covered with natural paint. Clay plaster can be applied onto various surfaces such as clay plaster undercoat, gypsum plaster and plasterboard. However, with the exception of the clay plaster undercoat, all other surfaces need to have a primer applied before using clay plaster. Clay plaster can be reworked at any time in the future by simply spraying dampening with water. Any imperfections or damage can be easily and invisibly rectied. Therefore jobs such as chasing in a new electrical conduit become much simpler tasks and leave no trace of having been done. Once dry, a clay plastered wall looks much the same as a gypsum wall and will take picture hooks, wallpaper and paints. However plastering a room can be achieved three or four times faster than using gypsum plaster if mechanical spray application is used. So what is the disadvantage of using clay plaster? Drying times, typically a week, are longer - but careful on-site scheduling of work can avoid delay, especially since the plastering can be a more rapid process in the rst place. Clay plaster is widely used all over the continent. Please speak to a product specialist prior to selection of these products.

Tierrafino Stone
Waterproof shiny, lime-based plaster
INTRODUCTION Tierrafino Stone is a waterproof shiny lime-based plaster for interior and exterior use. Its strength and marble-like appearance make it ideal for bathrooms and wet-rooms, fireplaces, table-tops, stairways, pillars and other ornamental uses, even floors. GENERAL
Tierrano Stone Tadelakt is a water-proof, shiny limebased plaster for interior and exterior use, supplied as a powder. Tierrano Stones strength and marble-like appearance make it ideal for bathrooms, replaces, tabletops, stairways, pillars and other ornamental use. This beautiful nish follows the old Moroccan Tadelakt tradition. Tadelakt, freely translated, means to rub in. In this case it is meant that the nearly nished lime coat is polished with a stone, rubbing Tadelakt soap into the surface. The Tadelakt soap, which is based on pure olive oil, adds to the shine, but perhaps even more important, it makes sure the surface is left waterproof. Floors can be done in Tierrano Stone, but remain somewhat fragile to, for instance, small stones in the sole of a shoe which will scratch the nish. Therefore we only advise to use Tierrano stone in areas where walking is done bare feet or on soft shoes. A minimum of pigments should be used on oors (1-2 %). Tierrano imports this material from Morocco and brings it to colour with beautiful earth pigments. This to ensure a 100% natural building material and to create our 6 standard colours that all have a natural look. Tierrano Stone Tadelakt, seen in the most exquisite of Moroccan bath houses, lends to a most elegant and serene atmosphere. Tierrano Stone offers a classic and stylish nish to your bathroom, kitchen and other feature areas in your home and workplace.
Maintenance
Drying Time
Do not clean with aggressive cleansers. Instead use Tierrafino Soap. This will not only keep the finish clean but will also maintain the waterproofing.
The finished Tierrafino Stone will take from 2 to 24 hours to be dry enough for polishing. After approximately 1 week the final colour can be seen. After approximately 6 months the finish will be fully hardened. The walls of a shower cabinet can be used after 1 week; shower floors after 4 weeks.
Time
Tierrafino Stone is a very labour-intensive material. Allow for the application of approximately 4m per day per operative.

COLOURS
Tierrano Stone Tadelakt is available in Delphi white to which pigments can be added for colour. It is also possible to make a choice from our pre-coloured range: Roman Ochre, Nassau Orange, Djenn Red, Iquitos Green and Gomera Grey. Construction Resources
Natural flooring
INTRODUCTION Construction Resources can confidently claim to offer the best range of ecological floor coverings available in the UK market. These include 100% natural wool carpets, sisal and coir, and top quality solid timber flooring. GENERAL
Construction Resources wool carpets These carpets offer a 100% untreated wool carpet collection in a variety of weights and grades. There is also a choice of three backing materials available - jute, latex or wool.
Unlike conventional carpets, when the time comes for disposal, the carpets can be disposed of without damaging the environment.
Sisal and coir carpets Sisal and coconut coir carpeting comes in a variety of attractive colours and textured weaves. All sisal comes from the same sources mostly Latin America and Africa, in differing qualities and most of it is dyed and woven at source. The difference, as with wool carpets, comes in the backing. Our sisal and coir carpeting is unique in having 100% natural backings. Natural latex backing, coupled with the exceptionally high density of the selected sisal, makes it suitable for demanding use in ofces and public buildings, where it can stand up to the heavy demands of ofce chair casters. Latex-backed sisal is 5mm thick and needs to be fully glued down.
The range is the rst available in the UK to positively address the issue of air quality. During production all raw materials for the carpet, such as wool and jute, are carefully checked for chemical contamination. The woollen thread is woven onto a base of linen and cotton mix, rather than synthetic materials. The jute backing is attached with 100% natural latex, rather than synthetic latex. Unlike most carpets on the market, the CR range carpets are naturally anti-static because they can absorb up to one third of their weight in moisture. The lanolin from the eece is still present and so acts as a natural stain inhibitor. Not only do these carpets perform to the highest standards, but they are available in a beautiful range of colours, thanks to the natural dyes and mixing of wools. Like conventional carpets, the amount of wool per square metre dictates the durability and whether they are best suited for living or working areas, stairs, or provide resistance to ofce chair casters.
Happy Step underlay For underlay, particularly where sound-deadening is a matter for concern, Happy Step underlay boards, manufactured from compressed wood bre, can provide both a smooth surface and an impressive 36 decibel sound reduction. Wood ooring Our wood ooring has a beautiful range of 12* native European species of timber, including the little-known robinia or false acacia which is more durable than oak, with a similar rot resistance to teak.
avoid timber contact with pesticides. The wood is supplied unnished and we recommend the use of natural oil and wax nishes. This allows the pores of the timber to stay open, enabling the wood to breathe, which helps stabilise relative humidity in the building. Construction Resources also sells and rents machines for sanding and polishing oors. For advice on matters relating to ooring contact our Product Specialist.
With the jute backing alternative, and double-sided tape, up to 25 square metres of 6 mm-thick sisal can be loose laid, making it suitable for rented buildings or oors on which glue is undesirable. Woollen felt backing brings the thickness up to 10 mm, but provides a uniquely comfortable surface to walk on, as well as being warm underfoot and adding sound insulation. We can also offer one or more of a range of attractive coloured linen edging tapes to order.
Woodline ooring can be supplied as parquet or oorboards in grades that range from rustic to exclusive. The solid timber ooring is from 16 mm to 22 mm thick, ensuring that it will last several lifetimes. Woodline only use timber from sustainably managed European forests and the suppliers must rigidly

Wool is a natural material, so woollen carpets are 100% natural, right? Sisal is natural, too, so surely the same applies? Generally not. Most woollen carpets are dyed with synthetic dyes, made from a wide range of chemicals. But the trouble really starts with the wool itself. To carry the heavily-promoted Woolmark label, wool has to be treated with pyrethroids, for example the Beyer chemical companys Eulan, to a minimum concentration of 130 milligrams per kilogram. Pyrethroids act as nerve poisons, and their use in carpets has been banned in the USA for 15 years. So pure wool carpets are not usually very pure. The problem gets even worse if they have a latex backing. In most cases this actually means synthetic latex. First of all, this is not bio-degradable, unlike natural latex, which means that most latex-backed carpets should only be disposed of as expensive chemical waste. Secondly, synthetic latex contains an unhealthy cocktail of antiageing chemicals. Thirdly, it contains vulcanisation agents which include styrene, a cancer-producing chemical. It is the styrene which gives new carpets their special smell. Sisal, too, is a wonderfully durable and attractive carpeting material whose natural qualities are most often spoiled by synthetic latex backing, if not synthetic dyes as well. If you really want a healthy home, make sure that your carpets are not polluting your environment. There are some carpets around that are truly 100% natural and without chemicals and they are not more expensive than conventional carpets of similar quality. Make sure that you ask your carpet supplier about the exact, full content of the wool or sisal and the backing. Youll be surprised by some of the answers.

GENERAL
Geysira is a new natural carpet collection for both domestic and contract use made with 100% untreated Icelandic wool. The aim of combining nature and technology was achieved both in production and in design. Careful respect for nature has governed every step, from care for the animals to the manufacturing process. Icelandic sheep are a breed unique in the world. Their wool, adapted to the harsh climate, is characterised by a particularly resistant doublelayer fibre structure, and the cold climate means it does not need any chemical treatment against pests. The wool used to produce geysira carpets is supplied by ISTEX Icelandic Textiles, the only Icelandic company which collects its wool directly from local sheep farmers for processing into yarn. The wool is sorted by quality and colour in the sorting sheds before being moved into the washing process. Natural steam comes out of the ground as geysers in the area where the wool is washed: this steam is used to heat the washing vats and for drying the wool. The 5-step washing process is carried out at a temperature of 45C. Minimal amounts of soap and cleaning agents are used in order to retain the wools natural qualities. The wool is then spun in several steps into the type of yarn desired. The colouring comes exclusively from the natural colours of Icelandic sheeps wool black, brown and natural white.
