1 Introduction
1.1 About Reaching Out Student Case Study
The Reaching Out assignment is about observing the behavioral pattern of a class mate over a two-three week observation period and discussing the data with the subject, trying to highlight his/her key strengths, areas of concerns and other significant behavioral patterns. At the end of the observation period, the gathered data is to be discussed with the student and an action plan is devised in order to address the issues faced by him/her.
The initial part is the Ethnographic Note-Taking which covers her behavioural pattern observed in the past 4 weeks.
The second part is an analysis of Jeevas Self Assessment Reports which is a complete coverage of the ten self assessment tests carried out in the class. The third part is about the in-depth discussion on Jeevas strengths and areas of concern. This part also covers the action plan charted out for her to address the issues. The final part is the summation of the assignment which gives a summary of the entire case study.

2.1 Academics
2.1.1. Quality of Work Jeevas quality of work did not decline or fluctuate too much but in a particular subject she faced some problem of maintaining the quality. In this particular subject, because she had a small argument with her team mates she could not give her best and due to which her quality of work declined. However, her quality of work is dependent on factors like: her interest in the subject, faculty involved and her liking for that particular assignment/case study. 2.1.2 Grades & Finishing Allotted Work Jeeva faced no issues with grades and has been doing good in all the subjects despite several placement processes going on. Jeeva did not face any issues with completing any work on time and has been fairly punctual in her submissions.
Partly a reason for this can be that she doesnt have a corporate experience yet and she believes that she can achieve a lot as theres still a long way ahead. Talking about competitiveness, Jeeva displays moderate to high levels of competitiveness but she believes that she cant be so competitive at the expense of someone or something. When it comes to personal front, Jeeva believes that shes content and has achieved a fair deal. 2.3.7 Dealing with Mistakes Jeeva finds it easier to say sorry to someone close to her and accepting her mistake gracefully while moving on. However, when it comes to people who are not too close, Jeeva chooses discretion and may or may not be too accepting with her mistakes. In short, interactions and discussion with her has revealed that shes someone who can forgive but has hard time forgetting things.
Anger Management indicates a high score, which means a potential area of concern. Discussions with her have revealed that she has been short tempered and aggressive right from childhood. There have been instances where she has lost her cool and that have affected her relationships with people close to her.
Jeeva has an average score when it comes to assertion management but on the higher side of the scale which means that she has tremendous potential of converting it to Strength. I have observed that Jeeva is very assertive in a group but sometimes she can come out as an aggressive competitor.
Jeeva has an average score when it comes to anxiety management and she displays anxiety before important events such as tests, interviews and presentations. I have also observed that when anxious she suffers from irritating leg syndrome and starts shaking her legs. She tries to calm herself down by taking a walk around or pray to the god before the events that make her nervous.
Jeevas Social awareness skills lie in the Develop-Strengthen area and can be a bit of concern for her as she has been told by people to listen to them and stop talking. She also feels that she has a little trouble understanding people.
Jeeva shows an average level of empathy skills however, it lies on the lower side and means that it can be a problem for her. Her empathy levels usually varies with people and her empathy levels are higher when it comes to close people but she tries to bring about her own point of view in a discussion which indicates that she isnt an active listener.
Jeeva shows an average level of decision making skills however, it lies on the higher side and means that it can be converted into strength. Jeeva believes that shes a good decision maker when it comes to professional front but fails in a lot of aspects on the personal front.
Jeevas Positive Influence skills lie in the Strengthen Enhance category which is a very good sign of being converted into strength. Jeeva has normally been a cheerful and happy go lucky person and hence this is a major reason for her being a positive influence on her peer/friends group.
Jeevas drive strength is between strengthen- enhance indicating that she has a strong drive strength and that can be seen from her dedication towards studies and also her summer internship stint at Tata Motors where she was also offered a chance of PPI.
Jeeva shows a very high commitment ethic and that can also be seen from her high levels of dependability. I have observed that Jeeva completes her work on time and with the desired level of quality. Her friends and team mates have also said that shes a reliable person and a treat to work with.
Jeeva shows a very high time management skill and that can be seen from her timeliness of submission of any project work, assignments etc. However, since she is very punctual, she expects even the other person to be on time and there is a possibility of a mismatch of expectations in this case.
4.1 Strengths
4.1.1 Time Management
Jeeva scores very high in time management and I have observed that she hasnt been late for any lecture and has stuck to every deadline. Positive Implications: Being punctual and always on time will help Jeeva professionally and will create an image for her as someone who finishes her work on time. Being on time is a great asset and the kind of respect she can garner through this quality is immense. The biggest advantage of being on time is that she doesnt have to worry about any pending work which can be a big relief especially in her job at Bisleri (Sales related). Being punctual also increases the sense of reliability on the person and hence Jeeva can command dependability and responsibility in both her personal as well as her professional life. Negative Implications: In a bid to be always on time, she may try to complete her work in haste and the quality of work may suffer. She should always guard against this. Being dependable can prove to be a double edged sword as superiors may always expect her work to be on time even when shes loaded with work. Also, being punctual means that Jeeva also expects her friends to be on time and there have been a few occasions where she has gotten angry with close friends when they were not on time.
The other positive effect of a strong commitment ethic is she will have a positive influence on her superiors as well as her subordinates. Negative Implications: Again, commitment ethic can prove to be a double edged sword as the increased dependability will increase the expectations of everyone around her.
4.2.1 Incidents
1. Getting agitated at a teammate: During one of the assignments in Talent Management, Jeeva had completed the entire assignment beforehand. But during the lecture, one of her team mate started searching for some more material related to the assignment which Jeeva found unnecessary and got agitated with this colleague. She shouted at her angrily but later realized that it wasnt the teammates fault. 2. Angry on a close friend: Few days back, she had gone on a trip and stopped by a mall while returning home. Her friend was with her and had an appointment some hours later. She kept reminding that he should drop her home and had to leave accordingly. Though they left early because of heavy traffic they were stuck and he asked her to catch an auto and head home since he had to be on time. She was very disappointed at that time by the behavior and walked out of the car. It took her 2 days to finally talk it out and she realized that she should have been more practical and understanding. 3. Being on time: Jeeva also had a fight with her team mates during a particular project wherein she had submitted her analysis to the group on time but rest of the teammates kept procrastinating until it was the final day of submission. This angered Jeeva and she ended up having a big fight with them. 4. Lost something dear: Few days back her classmate had borrowed some stuff and lost it. It was something very important to her and she had allowed her to have it with the confidence that it will be returned to her. After the incident Jeeva found it really hard to even acknowledge her and chose to ignore her for a while. Though she sorted out things soon she confessed that she felt really bad about how she treated her friend and that she was equally sorry that Jeevas stuff was lost. Negative Implications: Anger if not controlled can strain both personal as well as professional relationships which can be detrimental for her future. Uncontrolled anger and anything said when angry can hurt peoples feelings and she needs to guard against it.
People will start referring to her as being aggressive, belligerent and volatile, which is not good at work place. Strained relationships at work place may lead to declining quality of work and also people may stop interacting with her.
slate. This will involve her putting herself in the other persons shoes and understanding the situation in a better way. 4. Count & Splash: During the discussion on anger management in the class, a lot of ideas came out and one of my action point is based on those ideas. One of my classmate said that it has been proved that splashing water on face helps in reducing the blood pressure and helps ease out the anger. Also, another tried formula used by a lot of people is counting back numbers to distract oneself. I have asked Jeeva to follow these two techniques and see if it helps her. 5. Inner Peace is Right Here: One thing Jeeva needs to do is remind herself that whenever she is angry her inner peace lies in her own hand and no one else has any power to rob it off her. This belief is going to greatly help her understand that being happy and calm is in her own hand and the remote control should always be with her and not someone else.
5 Summation
5.1 Prominent Behavioral Patterns
Summing up the entire case study, the following four prominent behavioral patterns that I have observed in Jeeva: 1. Time Management: Time management is a great asset that Jeeva has and it is reflected in everything she does right from academics to her professional life. 2. Commitment Ethic: Jeeva shows a very high level of commitment ethic and hence her colleagues find her easy to work with. Also, she has been highly dependable due to this quality of her. 3. Social Awareness and Empathy: Jeeva needs to learn a lot when it comes to Active Listening and understanding people with a clean slate. Social awareness and empathy are two skills she seriously needs to work upon as they lie at the border of being treated as an area of concern. 4. Uncontrolled Anger: Jeeva has always been a short tempered person and she needs to guard herself against losing her temper too much. Jeeva and I have devised an action plan which may help her tackle the issue of anger in a better way.
5.2 Implications
All the above 4 behavioral patterns have a strong co-relation to how Jeeva behaves and each of it have their own set of positive and negative implications. Anger in her case, if not controlled at the right time may prove to be a major problem that may spoil her relationships in the future. Social awareness and empathy is something that she will need to build upon otherwise people around her may start feeling left out or unheard. Her high commitment ethic is a great asset and will add on to her reputation of being dependable and reliable both at the professional and personal fronts. Time Management skills are a rarity now and having great command on such a skill would greatly help her at her work place especially her sales related job which is dependent on a lot of deadlines.
5.2 Conclusion
It was an amazing experience to learn and understand another human being which will definitely improve my empathy skills. The discussions I had with Jeeva were very fruitful and I also understood and learnt a lot of things that I can inculcate in my life. Finally I hope the 5-point action plan helps Jeeva in addressing her area of concern and I wish her all the best for her future!
