Getting approval to take the PMP Exam is just as important as studying for the exam; after all, you won’t
get anywhere if you can’t even take the test! Taking the Project Management Professional Exam isn’t
like any test you took in high school or college; it requires experience and professionalism prior to
testing.
The first thing you need to do to apply to take the Project Management Professional Exam is to submit
your application. Here you will list your experience as a project manager and any completed projects
you’ve helmed. If you only have a high school degree, you need 5 years experience as a project manager
and 35 hours worth of project management training to qualify. If you have a bachelor’s degree or
higher, you only need 3 years experience as a project manager and 35 hours worth of project
management training.
Once you have put together your relevant experience information, you have to submit your initial
application along with your payment. The auditors at the Project Management Institute will then review
your application, make sure that all the details are accurate and thorough, and they may also contact
your references to validate any professional experience. This review process takes approximately 5 days.
If your application passes the initial review, your application may proceed to the next level of auditing:
another 5‐day process that involves an in‐depth evaluation of the projects you’ve managed. As stated
before, not all candidates will go through this process. This audit is a random method used by the
Project Management Institute to make sure that they are maintaining a high level of professionalism
and expertise when they approve applications. After you have been approved as a legitimate project
manager, you have a year to take the Project Management Professional Exam, which completes the
credential process.
IN order to get ready for the Project Management Professional Exam, you have to study. Studying for
the Project Management Professional Exam is just like studying for any college‐level exam. The best
study method for you depends on your learning style; so many candidates will call upon those skills that
got them through college to take the exam. After you have studied the material and feel like you have a
good grasp of project management theory, submit yourself to a practice test to see how you do.
After you have taken a practice Project Management Professional Exam, identify which sections you
need to brush up on and go back and focus on them. Most candidates find that 4‐6 weeks of studying for
5‐7 hours a week is all they need to pass the Project Management Professional Exam.
