ELECTRICAL AND LIGHTING INDUSTRY

The electrical and lighting industry is a loose agglom eration of businesses involved in some way with the generation, transmission and distribution of electri city. Lighting and lighting fixtures have been traditionally associated with this industry even th ough they have distinctly different technological characteristics. For example, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) in the United States incorporates businesses in 10 segments: building systems, electronics, emerging technologies, industrial automation, insulating materials, lightin g systems, medical imaging and technology, power equipment, security imaging and communications, a nd cable and wire. A fundamental understanding of the characteristics of electricity and a common concer n for the safe use of electricity seem to be the binding forces across these diverse businesses. There are separate industry associations for power generation companies, power transmission companies, etc. Large companies, such as Siemens and ABB, tend to have business in all three segments. Companies, such as GE and Philips, have lighting as a core product, typically housed within a consumer products division. The electrical components segment (normally referred to as electricals) comprises components such as circuit breakers and switches, and the lighting segme nt comprises light sources (e.g. bulbs) and lighting fixtures. Although these two segments have distinct technological characteristics, the distribution and retailing of the products from these two segments are through common channels and often are bundled together in large project bids.

Electrical Components

Electrical components are mechanical devices used in electrical applianc es; wires, cables and switches are common products. Other examples incl ude diodes, capacitors, insulators , resistors, motors, switches, switchgear and relays. Electricals must be safe and made of good material; they must not leak electricity. In addition, they must be durable and capable of su staining the designed loads. For the electricals used in automobiles, the criteria often incl udes compact and lightweight. Quality is an important consideration for

these products as even a small erro r in shape or workability could dama ge the whole device. To control these requirements, there are a number of internationa l and local standards for quality for these electrical products. In addition, branding and cert ification by national and internatio nal bodies have played a critical role in consumers buying decisi ons related to these products.

Methodology
Data collection Data collection is a term used to describe a process of preparing and collecting business data - for example as part of a process improvement or similar project. Data collection usually takes place early on in an improvement project, and is often formalized through a data collection Plan which often contains the following activity. 1. Pre collection activity Agree goals, target data, definitions, methods 2. Collection data collection 3. Present Findings usually involves some form of sorting analysis and/or presentation. There are two methods of data collection which are discussed below: 1. primary data 2. secondary data

Primary data In primary data collection, you collect the data yourself using methods such as interviews and questionnaires. The key point here is that the data you collect is unique to you and your research and, until you publish, no one else has access to it.I have tried to collect the data using methods such as interviews and questionnaires. The key point here is that the data collected is unique and research and, no one else has access to it. It is done to get the real scenario and to get the original data of present. Secondary data All methods of data collection can supply quantitative data (numbers, statistics or financial) or qualitative data (usually words or text). Quantitative data may often be presented in tabular or graphical form. Secondary data is data that has already been collected by someone else for a different purpose to yours. Need of using secondary data 1. Data is of use in the collection of primary data. 2. They are one of the cheapest and easiest means of access to information. 3. Secondary data may actually provided enough information to resolve the problem being investigated. 4. Secondary data can be a valuable source of new ideas that can be explored later through primary research.

Limitation of secondary data 1. May be outdated. 2. No control over data collection. 3. May not be reported in the required form. 4. May not be reported in the required form. 5. May not be very accurate. 6. Collection for some other purpose.

DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUE Questionnaire: Questionnaire are a popular means of collecting data, but are difficult to design and often require many rewrites before an acceptable questionnaire is produced. The features which were kept in mind while drafting the questionnaire are: Theme and covering letter Instruction for completion Types of questions Length

Interview: This technique is primarily used to gain an understanding of the underlying reasons and motivations for peoples attitudes, preferences or behavior. The interview was done by asking a general question. I encourage the respondent to talk freely. I have used an unstructured format, the subsequent direction of the interview being determined by the is its initial problem is. respondents initial reply, and come to know what

SAMPLING METHODOLOGY Sampling technique: Initially, a rough draft was prepared keeping in mind the objective of the research. A pilot study was done in order to know the accuracy of the questionnaire. The final questionnaire was arrived only after certain important changes were done. Thus my sampling came out to be judgmental and continent.

Sampling Unit: The respondents who were asked to fill out questionnaires are the sampling units. These comprise of employees of corporate HR, jetairways , who had attended the personality development workshop. Sampling Size: 50

Risk of electrocution(electric shocks)XXIV

Risk of fire Risk of Electrocution (Electric shocks) Electrocution is the passage through human body, which is dangerous . T h e f l o w o f current through human body, affects two vital functions Breathing Heart BeatE l e c t r o c u t i o n c a n l e a d t o m u s c l e c o n t r a c t i o n c a u s i n g r e s p i r a t o r y p a r a l y s i s , c a r d i a c fibrillation and immediate cardiac arrest resulting in death depending upon the magnitudeof the leakage current and the contract voltage. Risk of fire Poorly insulated wiring or loose connections are enough to create fire hazards a portionof the current which normally flows in the conductor can find a way back to the earththrough these "leaks" and through materials with varying degrees of conductivity. Thesematerials are not intended to conduct current, and may get heated up to such a degree thatthey will set fire to whatever they are in contact with (insulation, wood etc.). This is thestart of fire . Solution Earth Leakage Circuit Breakers installed in the circuit senses these leakage currents andisolates the faulty circuit thereby ensuring safety against the hazards of earth leakage. It ismandatory to install an ELCB in the incoming circuit for all installations except those specified by the section 30 of the Indian Electricity Act, 1910.XXV
