Instructions and set-up procedure


1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Open the recording software (Goldwave) and set the record time to 45 minutes (refer to the RELTA Examiner Manual for more comprehensive instructions). Load the test. Greet and relax the candidate. Briefly remind the candidate about the structure of the test and what is required of them in each section. Present the candidate with the Candidate Information Card (last page of this booklet). Once the candidate is comfortable with headset and sound quality assume your position at the examiner console.

Instructions for delivering Section 1


1. Click to advance to the first screen and allow candidates time to read the information for Section 1 and check when they are ready to begin.

Ask the questions below (these are not assessed). Confirm and correct any incorrect responses, and provide further clarifications if required. a. b. c. d. e. f. What is your name? What callsign would you like to use for Sections 1 and 2 of the test? What aircraft will you be flying? What airport are you going to be departing from? How many runways are there at the airport? Which runway will your flight depart from?

Deliver Section 1 of the test using the following script. The examiner should control when each subsequent screen is displayed to the candidate by clicking on the green continue symbol: to progress through the test.(do this when prompted, in the script). Remember to use the callsign the candidate offered in question f, in the warm-up throughout Sections 1 and 2

Candidates hear Flight attendant.then audio fades and picture of bomb slowly fades in. Allow 5 seconds Curran Centre, Callsign, a suspicious package (suspected bomb) has been found on board our aircraft. We require (immediate) descent to 8000 feet. Callsign, understood, descend to 8000, QNH 1012 when able advise intentions. Descend to 8000, QNH 1012, Callsign, (leaving FL 120) Callsign, roger.

Callsign Operations. We have your report of the device. Can you confirm the exact location of the problem? Callsign, the package is in an overhead compartment (in the first class cabin), at the forward left of the aircraft (or similar). Callsign, roger divert immediately to Ashton and please describe the device. Callsign, the object appears to be sticks of dynamite, taped (bound) together with some kind of timing device attached (or similar) ;we will divert to Ashton. Callsign roger, thankyou. Curran Centre Callsign, require track direct to Ashton. Callsign, recleared track present position direct to Ashton, maintain 8000. When able report POB, endurance and any dangerous cargo. Direct to Ashton, 8000, wilco Callsign. Callsign, do you require vectors or can you proceed under your own navigation? Callsign, request own navigation.

Candidates see image of fire in the cabin. Allow 5 second to absorb. MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY, (Curran Centre),Callsign, we have fire (smoke and flames) in the cabin/ flight deck (a bomb has exploded) on emergency descent from 8000 feet heading 020, tracking direct to Ashton and require emergency services on arrival. Callsign, roger your Mayday, advise your level when maintaining, say again what it is that you require on arrival. Callsign, we require fire (emergency) services and medical services (ambulance) in attendance (on arrival) Callsign, roger they will be in place for your arrivaland from fire services, can you tell me cabin conditions and are passengers able to breathe normally? Callsign, we have smoke in the cabin and flight deck, passenger masks are in use and we are using oxygen at this time. Callsign, understood. Callsign, can you contact our company and advise (update) them of our situation? Callsign, wilco, confirm you have no dangerous cargo on board.

Callsign, negative, we are carrying hazardous chemicals (radioactive waste, dangerous material). Callsign roger, maintain not below 4000 due terrain, continue on your current heading 020, no traffic in your area.

Instructions for delivering Section 3


1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Ask the candidate to remove their headset, leave the candidate console and join you at the examiner console. Position the microphone at your station so that during the interview, both you and the candidate are not too far from the microphone. Position your computer screen so that the candidate can view the image(s) in Section 3, Part 2. Use the Speaking Test - Section 3 (Interview) Questions (on the following page) to ask the candidate questions for Section 3. The images for Section 3, Part 2 will be displayed on the examiner computer screen. Display these image(s) by clicking on the green continue symbol on the screen when the interview reaches Section 3, Part 2. Note that the questions in Roman numerals are related to the same topic. In Section 3, Part 3, not all questions iv, v an vi need to be asked. Use these questions at your discretion. These questions are designed to elicit responses for candidates who have been producing partial or short responses. However, all questions should be asked if time permits (25 minutes in total, for the whole of the speaking test). Section 3 should elicit between 7 to 10 minutes worth of candidate speech.

Section 3 - Interview questions


1 2 i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. 3 Tell me about what was unusual about your flight in Section 2. Look at the picture showing what happened during your flight in Section 2. Can you describe this situation? (Tell me about what you can see in the picture.) What do you think caused the fire? What kind of material do you think this was? How do you think it got on the aircraft? What did you need to do? Do you know of any situations where your company has had a fire in the cabin? (Tell me about what happened.) Have you ever had to declare an emergency? (OR Tell me about an emergency situation you have practised in the simulator). Lets now discuss some more general aviation issues, where Id like you to give your opinion and ideas. Safety and emergency procedures are continuously changing. i. What changes have occurred to the way emergencies are managed in your company/country? (For example, how has new technology changed they way a cabin fire is managed?) How have these changes affected your job? What qualities do you think a pilot should have to be able to manage emergency situations like a fire in the cabin? (Select from the following, if needed): iv. v. vi. What suggestions do you have which could improve they way emergencies are managed? Are there any regions/countries which manage emergencies better? Where? In what way? How do you think the aircraft you fly could be improved to make it safer?
