Time allowed: 2 Hours Additional Material: Not required INSTRUCTIONS T O CANDIDATES This paper contains 4 questions in 5 pages. All questions carry equal marks. Answer A L L questions. This is a closed book examination. This paper accounts for 75% of total assessment. Mobile phones are not permitted. Only equipment allowed is a calculator approved and labeled by the Faculty of Engineering. The maximum marks attainable are indicated in square brackets. Assume reasonable values for any essential data not given in or with the examination paper. Clearly state such assumptions made on the scripts. I f you have any doubts to the interpretation of the wording of a question, make your own decision, but clearly state it on the script. March 2011

Question 2 (a) Derive the circuit that exhibits the following impedance matrix: Z ( S ) = 2(S + 1 ) ( S + 3 ) / ( S + 2 ) ( S + 6 ) And which has simple, alternating poles and zeroes on the real negative axis, and that the singularity near /at the origin is a zero & the singularity near the infinity is a pole, and (i) By verifying whether the residues at pole values are real and negative, [10 Marks] Thereafter, (ii) Indicate any conditions to check whether function is synthesizeable [20 Marks] (iii) Synthesize function using Foster's Method [50 Marks] (iv) Draw the circuit and label the component values [20 Marks] Question 3 Consider the following system represented in State Space:

Question 4 (a) Design a low pass filter to the following specifications. Pass band : 0-20kHz Pass band tolerance : 3dB Load Resistance =Source Resistance : 750Q Attenuation at 100 kHz should be at least 40dB. Use Butterworth Approximation. [50 Marks]

List the advantages of Active filters over passive filters. [10 Marks] Briefly explain two application examples each, for Low pass filters and High pass filters. [10 Marks]
