e-Governance: Enabling transparency and efciency in government

The need for good governance for Indias development is widely accepted. The challenge before the Indian government is to look at ways to improve governance. One of the ways to achieve the same is through the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or e-Governance, a signicant enabler for the endeavor. Indias National e- Governance Plan (NeGP) has paved the way for a systematic, wide scale implementation of e-Governance across the country. However, considering the larger perspective that thousands of departments all over the country are still delivering public services manually in a largely inefcient manner, e-Governance in India is still at a nascent stage and implementation of e-Governance strategies in a time bound and efcacious manner is essential to public interest

The Governments initiative

The NeGP of the Government of India focuses on the creation of the fundamental infrastructure required for e-Governance. It takes a holistic view of various e-Governance initiatives being undertaken across the country and integrates them into a collective vision of making all Government services accessible to the common man in his locality, through common service delivery outlets and ensuring efciency, transparency & reliability of such services at affordable costs to realise the basic needs of the common man (source: www.mit.gov.in)
