Nalco Products
SULFA-CHECKtm EC9085A (This list only represents the products with the high sales volumes that contain this specific material) This product is sold in bulk and tote quantities.

Product Uses
The major use of the substitued alkylamine is to scavenge hydrogen sulfide from sour crude oil, feedstocks and fuels. Crude oil contains various amounts of hydrogen sulfide and sulfur containing chemicals. During transportation and storage, the sulfur containing chemicals degrade to produce hydrogen sulfide which collects in the vapor space of transport and storage vessels. Hydrogen sulfide is corrosive to equipment and toxic to people. The alkylamines perform a valuable function by reacting with and removing hydrogen sulfide during crude oil production, transportation (pipeline, tanker), storage (tank farms) and refining applications.

Chemical Related Health Information

Based on information on very similar substances, this substituted alkylamine is expected to be harmful if swallowed, absorbed through the skin or inhaled. The substance is expected to be irritating to the eyes, skin and respiratory tract.

Vapors may have an offensive odor, which may cause a sensory response including headache, nausea and vomiting. Evidence in animal studies indicates that the substance is not expected to cause damage to genetic material (DNA). It is not expected to harm the unborn child. Based on models used by the EPA, the substance is not expected to be carcinogenic in animal studies.

Chemical Related Environmental Information

This substituted alkylamine is slightly toxic to fish and aquatic invertebrates. This substance is not expected to bioaccumulate based on EPA models. Although this material will degrade in the environment, the rate of degradation is not expected to be rapid.

Chemical Exposure Potential

Engineering controls are in place at Nalco facilities to reduce exposures of this material to employees, stakeholders, and the environment. The material is not released to the air. The packaged products are warehoused and any spills in the warehouse that are not immediately contained, naturally drain to our process water waste treatment. The spilled material is then segregated to different tanks for disposal or treatment, depending on the severity of the spill. All treated wastewater is monitored and analyzed continually for compliance with state and local regulation. Nalco uses these materials in products intended for industrial applications. Potential exposure to Nalco products is limited to those individuals working at the customers facility or site. In order to prevent skin exposures to this material it is suggested that workers wear a chemical resistant apron along with impervious gloves and boots. In order to prevent eye exposures to this material, chemical splash goggles are recommended. This chemical is volatile and should be used with adequate ventilation. If ventilation is inadequate, used of a respirator is recommended.. Nalcos patented injection technology (NALGUARDtm Quill) is recommended to maximize treatment efficiency and reduce employee exposure. The chemical remains with the produced crude oil or natural gas. It is not intentionally released to the environment untreated. Since the chemical is combustible, it should be kept away from sources of ignition (including cigarettes) and heat. The container should be kept tightly closed in a well ventilated area.

Since empty containers can contain product residue, they should not be pressurized, cut, heated, welded or exposed to flame or other sources of ignition. This product is fed via closed system, minimizing any potential impact on workers or the general public. This substituted alkylamine is not used in consumer applications and exposure to the general public is not expected during anticipated industrial use of this substance.

Chemical Risk Mitigation

Risk is measured as a function of hazard and exposure. This material has medium hazards for humans based on its irritancy, toxicity and environmental fate. When handled properly, utilizing appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE) and automated application with NALGUARD, potential worker exposure to this material is significantly reduced. Under normal conditions of anticipated use and when used with appropriate handling procedures and PPE, the overall potential risk of this material to human health and the environment is low. As with all products, care must be taken to prevent its release to the environment. In the event of a chemical release or spill Nalco has procedures in place that will reduce the potential human and/or environmental exposure through containment and remediation efforts.
