Matthew Wills English 1000 Dr. Toby Beeny 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Identify the situation. What motivates the author to write?

Identify the author's purpose? What does the author want the reader to do or think about? State the author's thesis in one sentence. State the author's thesis in three to five sentences. Is this a claim of fact, value, or policy? Explain your choice. (see textbook 55-56) Identify the audience based upon language used, references, and structure. What sort of evidence does the author use? Does the author make a concession to a different viewpoint? What arguments contradict or challenge the author's position?

1. The situation is the writings of Tolkien and how they are depicted in life today. The motivation the author gets to write is to correctly evaluate the writings of Tolkien and totally abolish the false translations and other straying meanings of all Tolkiens writing but mainly The Lord of The Rings. 2. The author wants to show what his thoughts and feelings are about The Lord of The Rings and convey them to the reader. He also wants you to think about the deeper meanings behind all the races of people in these Novels and relate them to real life. Also relate the way people interact with each other and apply these ideas to your own life. 3. There are many strong feelings that Tolkiens writing (especially The Lord of The Rings) provokes in many people. 4. Many people have strong feelings when reading Tolkiens writings. Some people are more moved by the way Tolkiens writings came about through not only Tolkien but his son Christopher. Tolkien use in religion is evident and greatly influences some of his work that he has accomplished in the past. 5. I believe that this is a claim on value. The writer is always using what he thinks is right and he references other peoples values also. 6. The audience is definitely an older (30-60 years of age) group of people. I cant decide whether this is for more Americans or Europeans. Or both. I cant base my decision off the references he uses because he has a very wide array of referecnes from a Canadian, McLuhan to americans like Langer and Burke. He also references some from European men. 7. a. The evidence on how inspiring his works are and how much thought he put in them he used Christopher Tolkien a source. Christopher spent much of his life compiling all the works of Tolkien and making stellar works of Literature. b. He uses Tom Shippey a lot to explain what Tolkien thought of his creations one example would (from Shippey) that Tolkien thought he was just reconstructing the world Middle-Earth. Not creating it. i. Shippey also explains Tolkiens views on his language and how it relates to culture. 8. Yes. I believe that he strays from what I believe his thesis. He goes on to talk about a lot of other topics such as how his writings were finished and how he is with the media. 9. I dont think that there is many contradicting points rather than just off topic points as I have mentioned above.
