Interactive Presentation

The Basic Structure of Personality, according to Freudian theory is divided into two main parts (a) the conscious and (b) the unconscious mind. The conscious mind is the part of the mind that interacts with the outside world. It is the decisions we make and the actual thinking we do. The unconscious mind is made up of the impulses and instincts that dictate our behavior without us knowing about it. Libido- is the human energy which controls behavior and continuously seeks discharge. He also divided the individual inner mind to three parts. These are id, ego, and superego. 1. Id makes up our all basic needs and drives. It contains our major energy force (libido), which is always finding expression. It doesnt concern of reality except its own desire. 2. The superego causes guilt for being bad. It holds the id in check. 3. The ego is our self. It allows id to express itself yet pays attention to reality. Freudian Criticism, literary criticism that uses the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud to interpret a work in terms of the known psychological conflicts of its author or, conversely, to construct the authors life from unconscious revelations in his work 1. The psyche Id the pleasure principle Superego the perfection principle Ego self; reality 2. Family Conflicts

Oedipus Complex- The young boy competes with his father for his mothers attention until he passes through the castration complex, which is when he abandons his desire for his mother out of fear of castration by his father. Electra Complex- young girls compete with their mothers for their fathers affection 3. Two Instincts-According to Freud, there are two classes of instincts: 1) Eros or the sexual instincts, which he later saw as compatible with the self-preservative instincts; and 2) Thanatos or the death-instinct, a natural desire to "re-establish a state of things that was disturbed by the emergence of life". Psychoanalytics job is to see what concepts are operating in the text that will yield a meaningful interpretation. Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism Focus On 1. the author 2. the character 3. the reader 4. the text Read: The Judgment (6 minutes maximum) Before the students read the article, teacher will give an overview on the authors background. Comprehension/ Application Group Activity

The teacher designates the task to each group. She would then monitor whether all of them are participating in the class. Group 1 Elements of Short Story a. Make a summary that critically includes the five elements of the story. Group 2 Focus on Author and Text a. Do you think the text mirrors the authors identity? How? b. Was there imagery or symbols in the text? What do they mean? Group 3 Focus on Character 1. What are the unconscious motives that are operating in the main characters? What is being repressed? 2. What are the personalities of the characters? Group 4 Focus on Reader 1. What universal issue/s does it reflect? 2. Does the text allow the reader to experience the central conflict?

Evaluation Creative Interpretation 1. Let each of the group change the ending of the story creatively. (Defend why.)

Conclude: The teacher will end the discussion through giving the limitations in using Sigmunds Theory of Personality.
