Marks

1. (a) Define the term logarithmic decrement. Show that the logarithmic decrement [08] is given by the equation 2 = -----------1 - 2 (b) The following data are given for a vibrating system with viscous damping: [08] w = (10Y) lb, k = 30 lb/in, and C = 0.12 lb/in/s. Determine the logarithmic decrement and the ratio of any two successive amplitudes. (Y = Your Roll No) 2 Derive the equations of motion and determine the natural frequencies and [16] amplitude ratio of the system as shown in Fig. 1. Define damped and un-damped systems of vibration. Design a vibration absorber [16] for an undamped system. 4. A vehicle of mass 1605 kgs has its centre of gravity 1.375 m behind the front springs and 1.525 m in front of the rear springs. The effective stiffness of the springs are: front 36.95 kN/m and rear 38.55 kN/m. The radius of gyration of the vehicle about a horizontal axis which passes transversely through the C.G. is 1.2 m. Determine: (a) The frequencies of natural vibrations produced in the principal modes. [08] (b) Sketch the position of the nodes. [04] (c) Find what modification must be made to the stiffness of the rear springs in [04] order to uncouple motion in the two degrees of freedom.

5. (a) What are the sources of unbalance in high speed rotating machinery? The [07]

schematic diagram of a Francis Hydraulic turbine is shown in Fig. 2, in which water flows from A into the blades B and down into the tail race C. The rotor has a mass of 250 Kg and an unbalance of 5 Kg-mm. The radial clearance b/w the rotor and the stator is 5 mm. The turbine operates in the speed range 660 to 6600 rpm. The steel shaft carrying the rotor can be assumed to be clamped at the bearings. Determine the diameter of the shaft so that the rotor is always clear of the stator at all the operating speeds of the turbine. Assume damping to be negligible. (b) Explain Vibration Isolation. A machine of 100 kg mass is supported on springs of total stiffness 700 KN/m and has an unbalanced rotating element, which results in a disturbing force of 350N at a speed of 3000 rpn. Assuming a damping factor of =0.2, determine (1) its amplitude of motion due to the unbalance (b) the transmissibility (c) the transmitted force. [09] Contd on P/-2.. (-2-) 6. (a) What is meant by static and dynamic coupling? [08] (b) Define stiffness Influence coefficients. Determine the stiffness matrix and [08] equation of motion for a system shown in figure

7.

For the three degree of freedom torsional system shown in Fig. 5 , determine [16] (i) The frequency equation. (ii) The natural frequencies of the system for J1 = J2 = J3 = J and Kt1 = Kt2 = Kt3 = Kt (iii) Fundamental frequency of the system using Dunkerleys equation. Use the Holzer method to determine the natural frequencies for torsional vibration of the four degree of freedom system as shown in Fig. 6. [16] k1 C1
