Jensen, Lundebrek lead Benson wrestlers in wins

The Benson wrestling team closed out the 2012-13 season with a 6-16 overall record and 3-6 mark within the WCC. The Braves were 6-11 at one point in the season before losing their nal ve matches to some of the top teams in the area -- KMS twice, Canby, Wabasso, and Quad County.

From left to right, Zach Carlson had the most wins for the Saints this season with 46, Jordon Rothers (middle) will graduate with 185 career wins, and Fred Manseld (right) was was one of 14 KMS wrestlers with at least 10 wins.

For KMS, it was another season to remember

Saints continue recent domination on the mat with 17-4 season
The KMS wrestling team had another stellar season, earning a state tournament team berth while also sending eight wrestlers to the state individual tourney. KMS went 17-4 overall in 20122013, losing only to Wabasso (31-29) and ACGC (49-14) during the regularseason and to Chateld (38-24) and ACGC (28-21) at the state tournament to place sixth in Class A. Zach Carlson, Jordon Rothers, and Chase Norton each went 3-1 at the state meet to nish second in their respective weight classes, coming up just one win short of a state title. In fact, KMS had three of the 28 Class A state nalists. Carlson nished his sophomore season with a 46-1 record after losing for the rst time, 6-5, in the 152-pound nals to another undefeated wrestler. Rothers placed second at state for the second-straight year, losing 2-1 in the nals at 160 pounds to close out the season with a 45-2 record and give the KMS senior 185 career wins. Norton also placed second at state in the 220-pound division. He was pinned in the nals and nished his junior year with a 34-9 record. Also competing at state for KMS were Jordan Engler at 113 pounds, Nick Meyer at 120, Cody Peters at 126, Kyle Baker at 145, and Jorge Munoz-Pederson at 220 pounds. Of those ve wrestlers, Baker won his rst match, but then lost the next two, while Jordan Engler and Nick Meyer both went 0-2, and Cody Peters and Jorge Munoz-Pederson were both 0-1. During the state team tourney, the Saints were seeded fourth but fell to fth-seeded Chateld in the rst round, 38-24. That sent KMS into the consolation bracket where it edged Barnesville (28-27) before losing to ACGC in the consolation championship, 28-21. ACGC, the third seed, was upset by Sibley East in

Storm trio made scoring a habit in 2012-2013

The Storm boys hockey team certainly saved its best for last this year. MBA closed out the 2012-2013 season with a 17-10 overall record and 6-4 mark within the Southwest Conference. The Storm started off 0-3 and 3-6 before turning the season around with an 11-4 victory over Worthington, Jan. 5, the rst day of the new year. Prior to that, MBA had given up 10 or more goals in four of the rst nine games, but only gave up that many one time over the last 18 games. The Storm had a 14-4 record during the 2013 portion of their schedule, including a 4-2 win over leaguechampion Luverne. MBA ended up losing 5-4 to Marshall one game later,

The Minnesota State High School League came out with its new twoyear alignments for high school sports last year, taking effect for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons. Most of the section assignments stay the same for Benson and KMS student-athletes, but a few sports will be playing in entirely-new sections next season against new teams. The MSHSL does the realignments every two years, based on new enrollment gures. Benson will continue to play in a variety of administrative sections including 5AA, 3AA, 6A, 3A, and 6AA, while KMS will play in 4A, 3A, and other sections when paired with Benson. There are not many changes in the fall as the Benson football team stays in Section 5AA, the KMS football MBA boys...see page 3B team remains in Section 4A, the Benson and KMS volleyball teams stay in 3AA and 3A, respectively, and girls tennis stays in Section 6A with all the same teams as the last two years. The cross-country teams also stay in Section 6A, but will lose three schools and gain one. In the winter, wrestling has one of the biggest changes as Section 3A has lost two schools -- Quad County (YME, RCW, and MACCRAY) and Redwood Valley, making for an 8-team section. With two state entries per weight class, theres a one-fourth chance of making it to state for Benson and KMS wrestlers. MBA hockey has the same section and teams, although the Lady Storm have added Pequot Lakes, while the gymnasts are stuck in Section 6A again with the same teams, the Benson boys and girls basketball teams remain in Section 6AA with all the same teams, and the KMS basketball programs stay in Section 3A with the addition of tiny Hendricks High School. Spring also brings just a few changes for KMS and Benson student-athletes. The boys tennis team has the biggest change, moving Tanner Picht earned All-Section back to Section 6A after spending
