The Media Dependant Adapter (MDA) provides highly flexible modularphysical network interface options for the Alcatel-Lucent 7450 Ethernet Service Switch/Router (ESS). The MDA is a hot-swappable, half-slot adapter that inserts into a full-slot 7450 ESS Input/ Output Module (IOM). Supporting up to two MDAs, the IOM provides fully distributed forwarding and packet services and delivers the full complement of the Alcatel-Lucent Service Router Operating System (SR OS)capabilities for the 7450 ESS. The 7450 ESS MDA delivers comprehensive IEEE 802.3 compliance, and in conjunction with the selected IOM, providescomprehensive support for IP/MPLS-based Carrier Ethernet services: Ethernet over MPLS (EoMPLS), Ethernet services such as Ethernet Line Services (E-Line), Ethernet LAN Services (E-LAN), Virtual Private Wire Services (VPWS) and Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) Because physical port interfaces can be selected in half-slot increments, the IOM and MDA combination enables service providers to achieve high-densitydeployments with an unmatched level of connectivity flexibility. This innovative approach allows service providers to

granularly configure each Alcatel-Lucent 7450 ESS with a broad range ofinterfaces to meet the increasing bandwidth and density demands of a converged network supporting voice, video, data, and wireless services.

MDA-XP extends platform performance and capacity

The 7450 ESS MDA-XP is the second generation of Alcatel-Lucent MDA technology; it more than doubles MDA slot performance over first-generation MDAs. Specifically designed andoptimized for the Input/Output Module 3-XP (IOM3-XP), the MDA-XP delivers up to 25 Gb/s (full duplex) of throughput in a half-slot IOM connection. MDA-XP hardware supports both LAN and WAN physical interfaces1 through the selection of appropriate pluggable optics. Additionally, the MDA-XP adds support for Synchronous Ethernet (Synch-E). With the IOM3-XP and MDAXPs deployed, service providers can boost the 7450 ESS per-slot capacity to 50 Gb/s (full duplex) scaling the chassis to 1 Tb/s total capacity. New 7450 ESS MDA-XPs include: 20-port GigE 10/100/1000-TX MDA-XP 20-port GigE SFP MDA-XP

High-density configuration flexibility

The MDA-XP builds on the highlyflexible nature of the MDA-IOM architecture by leveraging the increased bandwidth and service capacity of the IOM3-XP. This doubles the number of high-capacity, line-rate Gigabit and 10-Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) ports for the 7450 ESS platform, while the added bandwidth significantly reduces the rate of over-subscription for even higherdensity 10-GigE adapters. With the MDA-XP deployed, the 7450 ESS delivers industry-leading densities of up to 80 10-GigE and 400 GigE ports per chassis; and up to 240 10-Gigabit and 1200 GigE ports in a seven-foot rack. For maximum flexibility, the MDA-XP can be inter-mixed at both the IOM and chassis level with other supported 7450 ESS MDAs and Integrated Service Adapters (ISAs), including SONET/SDH; and existing MDAs offering 10/100Ethernet, 100-FX, Gigabit and 10-GigE copper and fiber interfaces. This results in a highly flexible approach to platform configuration, enabling serviceproviders to granularly configure each AlcatelLucent 7450 ESS with a broad range of interface, throughput and serviceperformance options.

adapters to a graceful over-subscribed mode in the IOM-1. When deployed in the IOM-1, the MDA-XP seamlesslysupports over-subscription with intelligent pre-classification applied to all traffic as it is passed between the MDA-XP and the IOM-based FP packet pro cessing complex. Any combination of MDAs and MDAXPs can be deployed in the same IOM, with each providing its intended level of performance. Consequently, the MDA-XP can be immediately andseamlessly deployed in existing environments, providing an unmatched level offlexibility and operational continuity. This results in a significant reduction in sparing requirements, while leveraging and preserving service provider technology investments.

optical parameters for each deployed SFP/XFP in real time includingtem perature, supply voltage, laser TX bias current, laser TX output power, and laser RX optical power. With a range of thresholds and real-time notification alarms, DDM can proactively identify optical errors, enabling proactive and rapid link and router fault isolation and resolution. As a result, real-time visibility significantly improvesinstallation, activation and troubleshooting and reduces overall operational costs.

End-to-end native Ethernet synchronization

The MDA-XP integrates support for Synchronous Ethernet (Synch-E)capabilities, providing a simple and costeffective strategy for providing SONET/ SDH-like synchronization for native Ethernet links in the Metro. Synch-E delivers synchronization performance identical to that of SONET/SDH,enabling the physical layer of an Ethernet link to distribute common timing andclocking across network nodes to the physical Interface (PHY) of each Ethernet device. Consequently, service providers can confidently leverage cost-effective native Ethernet connections to support deployments where consistent end-toend timing and synchronization are required, including IP video, voice, Carrier Ethernet services and mobile backhaul network environments. The MDA-XP leverages the existing synchronization connections of the chassis, connecting to the BITSinterface on the 7450 ESS Switch Fabric/ Control Processor Module (SF/CPM). Synch-E is implemented at the physical layer with no impact on Ethernettraffic flows, so quality is maintainedindependent of traffic load. The MDA-XP is hardware-ready to support ITU-T G.8263 for Sync Status Messaging (SSM), enabling compatibility with existing SONET/SDH equipment, and it supports Ethernet OAM channels to measure the quality and status of each synchronized link.

Flexible pluggable optics with digital diagnostics

To further extend the interfaceflexibility of the 7450 ESS platform, the MDA-XP supports a comprehensive range of pluggable optics, including Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggables (SFPs) and 10-Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggables (XFPs). Support is included for fixed wavelengths to support short-, intermediate- and long-reach applications at distances of up to 80 kilometers (50 miles). The MDA-XP also supports a comprehensive range of DWDM and CWDM optics at distances up to 120kilometers. The GigE MDA-XP also supports 1000Base-T copper SFPs for added configuration flexibility. AlcatelLucent optics are designed, manufactured and tested according to rigid specifications and are compatible with all industry standards. The MDA-XP supports a comprehensive range of integrated Ethernet service OAM capabilities to simplify andincrease speed of service operations and troubleshooting. Alcatel-Lucent extends OAM capabilities to pluggable optics with Digital Diagnostic Monitoring (DDM) capabilities for Ethernet SFP and XFP optics. DDM measures key

Cross-platform interoperability and backward compatibility

Although the 7450 ESS MDA-XP is optimized for the 7450 ESS IOM3-XP, it is fully backward compatible with existing 7450 ESS IOM-1 modules. The MDA-XP offers dual-operation modes with dynamic IOM detection. This enables the MDA-XP to adjust performance levels between the 25-Gb/s interconnect for the IOM3-XP, and the 10-Gb/s link provided by the IOM-1. The optimized design of the MDA-XP detects in which IOM the adapter is being hosted, and adjusts the MDAXPs port-level performance accordingly reverting the high-density
