PO2 (EOD2)(Explosive Ordnance
Disposal) Mike Monsoor, a Navy EOD
Technician, was awarded the Con-
gressional Medal of Honor posthu-
mously for jumping on a grenade in
Iraq , giving his life to save his fellow
Seals.
During Mike Monsoor's funeral in
San Diego , as his coffin was being
moved from the hearse to the grave
site at Ft. Rosecrans National
Cemetery, SEAL's were lined up on
both sides of the pallbearers route
forming a column of two's, with the
coffin moving up the center. As
Mike's coffin passed, each SEAL,
having removed his gold Trident from
his uniform, slapped it down embed-
ding the Trident in the wooden coffin.
The slaps were audible from across
the cemetery; by the time the coffin
arrived grave side, it looked as though
it had a gold inlay from all the Tridents
pinned to it. This was a fitting send-
off for a warrior hero.
Lise, copy that sweetie, when I think
of the average shirker that hides
behind the moral “war is wrong” phi-
losophy, it makes me wonder what the
new generation is really made of.
Whatever it is is just disgusting and
makes me think about what their chil-
dren are going to be all about.

Interesting piece on the Judge
Coffey case last month and we were
wondering if there have been any new
developements. We don’t expect to
hear anything more from the Packet
but think this is one of those local
embarassments that needs following.
coolcottoncandy, we haven’t
heard a word but have been contact-
ed by a couple of our beer drinking
lawyer type buddies that think Judge
Coffey’s days are numbered and were
so supportive that we have no choice
but to follow-up if and when pertinent
information becomes available. In all
due fairness we have also heard from
a close friend or two that have George
Breed bending a few rules in his own
right but have no documentation to
substantiate that.Thanks for reading.

Winter of our Discontent ll

Well now come to find out,
Shakespeare was a pretty hip old
dude after all. Not unlike his play “King
Richard lll” the book, as published in
1961 by John Steinbeck, (his last)
defined the “Winter of our Discontent”
as “over now and new beginnings are
in order”.
At the risk of being accused of wax-
ing philosophical, Steinbeck could
very well still be alive and well and
writing “Winter” as a reflection of the
present day. The stark difference of
course is that the Winter of our dis-
content has just begun and Spring is a
long way off.
The story revolves around New
Englander Ethan Allen Hawley, who
works as a clerk in a grocery store he
used to own. His wife and children
resent their lowly social and economic
position, and don't put any value in the
high levels of honesty and integrity
that Ethan struggles to maintain in a
corrupt society. Under this constant
pressure, Hawley will eventually man-
age to get back the store by renounc-
ing his morals, but the re-found wealth
will not bring happiness.
Feeling the pressure from his fami-
ly to achieve more than his current
station, Ethan considers letting his
normally high standards of conduct
take a "brief" respite in order to attain
a better social and economic position.
The Scheme Of Things
On discovering that the current
store owner, Italian immigrant Alfio
Marullo, might be an illegal alien, he
first turns him into the Immigration and
Naturalization Service and then
deceives him in handing the store
back to Hawley. Eventually, he even
manages to become "somebody" in
the local town by taking possession of
a strip of land needed by local busi-
nessmen to expand an airport; he'll
get the land from Danny Taylor, the
town drunkard and Ethan's childhood
friend, in exchange for enough money
to drink himself to death.
In this way, Hawley gets to a position
where he's able to get in on and even
manipulate and control the behind-
the-scenes dealings of the corrupt
town businessmen and politicians; no
longer will he or his family want for
anything. Ethan assuages his guilt by
finding excuses: Marullo really wanted
to get back to Sicily; Danny really
wanted to die.
Which brings us back to reality. Our
current Government wallows in cor-
ruption so that the status quo is pre-
served. They have convinced Main
Street that the stimulous is to
save/create jobs but what they know
but aren’t saying is that without jobs
they have no payroll tax, no incomes
to tax, no sales to tax, no production
excise tax, no consumption (VAT) tax
or imports to tax. Big brother is not
bailing out Main St., Main St. is bailing
out Big Brother.

Then let’s keep dancing. Its not
only impossible that Dennis Gerwing
acted alone in the alleged murder
and body removals of John and
Elizabeth Calvert, it is a matter of
record that he didn't. It says so. right
between the lines.
The empty Kendall Jackson bottle
found in the Villa where Gerwing's
body was discovered, and the toxi-
cology report stating that no alcohol
was found in his bloodstream,
–”zero”– proves that a third party was
present at that villa at one time or
another during his single overnight
stay there. Were there prints? Wiped
clean perhaps? What?
Also according to the tox report, at
approximately 9:30 pm on March 10,
Gerwing phoned his lawer from the
Villa to let him know where he’d be
staying and to leave him the phone
number there. At 3:58 pm the follow-
ing afternoon, Gerwing’s body was
found. The Coroner’s report states
that he’d been dead since somewhere
between 5am and 9 am that morning.
Interesting to think what Gerwing may
have been doing all night between the
hours of 9:30 pm, March 10, and the
time of his death 8-12 hours later.
According to the BCSO summary
report on page 5, 3rd paragraph, that
a car was left at the airport approxi-
mately 3 hours prior to the March 3rd
meeting "for friends that were flying in

later", strongly indicates that Gerwing
had an accomplice. A mild mannered
wine connoisseur with no priors, with
plans to murder two people in 3 hours
going casually about his way?
And then there was Gerwing’s
“motivated” suicide that many doubt
could have ever happened as con-
cluded. Trying to makes sense of a
guy that offs himself with a cheap ser-
rated kitchen knife is difficult because
it would mean a spur of the moment
decision. Suicide is not something
that just suddenly pops into a person’s
mind. As a person planning suicide by
bleeding to death would surly have
razor blades, or at least a good sharp
knife, we think it safe to conclude that
there was no plan to commit suicide if
indeed it was.
Then there’s the problem with the
money Gerwing stole single handed-
ly. It was never located. No one knows
where it went but its gone. Just like
the Calverts, without a trace. The only
referrences made to its whereabouts
were found in the suicide notes. “Its
gone”. A cover-up, but for who?
Coming April: A man thought to be a
lone double murderer commits sui-
cide, leaves 2 notes but makes no
mention of the murders he’s allegedly
committed. Odd? Next month see:

Who’d a thunk that all this econo
mess could have emanated from toxic
or otherwise “subprime” loans but
Little Joe has come to believe that it is
indeed how it all began almost 10
years ago now. While scouring around
the web we came upon a 1999 NYT
piece that pretty much solidifies the
notion. Those of you who ID with the
lefties that tend to blame it all on
Dubya, along with acts of God and
Global warming, you may just want to
stop reading now as bursting bubbles
is not one my favorite things to do.

Fannie Mae Eases Credit
To Aid Mortgage Lending
...published on September 30, 1999
and penned by STEVEN A. HOLMES,
this article may have been the first
time the word “sub-prime” was used.
To get the right tone of this NYT piece,
a few direct quotes are in order. The
first and second paragraphs read:
“In a move that could help increase
home ownership rates among minori-
ties and low-income consumers, the
Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the
credit requirements on loans that it will
purchase from banks and other
lenders.
The action, which will begin as a
pilot program involving 24 banks in 15
markets -- including the New York
metropolitan region -- will encourage
those banks to extend home mort-
gages to individuals whose credit is
generally not good enough to qualify
for conventional loans. Fannie Mae
officials say they hope to make it a
nationwide program by next spring.”
And that they did. It was all about

ies as laid out in the next paragraph.
“Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest
underwriter of home mortgages, has
been under increasing pressure from
the Clinton Administration to expand
mortgage loans among low and mod-
erate income people and felt pressure

nomenal growth in profits.”

Thought Food: Green Job?

President Obama's call for "green jobs" has created both general confusion
and competing interpretations of the term. Check out this take.
Exactly what a "green job" is, most people aren't quite sure yet. Does it refer

T his is the time to get to the the-
aters. Most of the Oscar-nomi-
nated films are playing, and those that
disappeared probably will be brought
back for audiences to get a second
chance. In about a month, the Academy
Awards will be history, and lame movies
undoubtedly will be released, making us
suffer another year of mediocrity.
Most of the Oscar-nominated films from
2008 are worth seeing, some are not. The
Curious Case of Benjamin Button has
incredible special effects and some nice
moments, but at nearly three hours with
little action, it is too long. The story of a
boy who is born old at the end of World
War I and ages backward, dying as an
infant in his true love's arms, Button
keeps coming across like a Forrest Gump
wannabe. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett
have good chemistry, and they generate
an old-fashioned romance on screen. The
film also makes the audience consider the
temporal nature of life, imparting the les-
son that time is short and we should enjoy
the good things while we have them. This
is all good and well, but the morals could
have been conveyed in two hours or less.
Definitely worth watching is Slumdog
Millionaire, the heartwarming indie film

Frank Vincent Zappa (December
