Domestic violence and rape cases in Malaysia are still on the rise with 3,173 and 3,595 cases

s reported in 2010. For domestic violence, 3,769 and 2,643 cases are reported in 2008 and 2009. Whereas for raping, there are 3,409 and 3,626 cases on raping in 2008 and 2009. The statistics from Polis Diraja Malaysia above shows stricter law and more effective support system are needed to reduce the numbers on both domestic violence and rape in Malaysia. There has been 7,246 reported domestic violence cases in the Counselling and Psychological Division of the Social Welfare Department since it was set up in 2002. Domestic Violence Act (DVA) In December 2011, there was an amendment on Domestic Violence Act in Malaysia which classified emotional abuse as a form of abuse. Third party abusers (eg thugs, gangsters) that had always got away in abuse cases could now be reported and charged under the DVA. This is a step ahead towards forming a protective law for the citizens, although no law is foolproof. However, there is still the main roadblock in building a better protection system in Malaysia the way police officers react to domestic violence and rape victims. Some complaints are taken aback by the apathetic officers who would not take complaints if physical marks are not present. This is where NGOs come into play to fulfill the role of nurturing and supporting friends to those undergone violence and sexual assaults. Womens Aid Organization is one of the society that provides temporary shelter and empowering counseling to victims. Law against the practice of rape Section 376 of the Penal Code states: whoever commits rape shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to twenty years, and shall be liable to whipping. Although marital rape is not punishable under the Malaysian law, Section 375A states clearly that any husband causing fear of death to or hurt his wife in order to have sexual intercourse shall be liable to 5 years jail punishment (maximum). As a woman, it is high time you understand the law concerning domestic violence and rape in Malaysia hence no one could frighten or threaten you with faulty facts. If you are in places with alcohol namely night clubs and bars, always go in a trusted group and never accept unknown drinks. Drug rape is another form of rape mostly go unreported for victims are typically unconscious. No betterments could be achieved if you leave domestic violence or rape cases go unreported. Seek for moral support and counseling for personal betterment, and help keep an eye for the people surround you. Only then, the fight against domestic violence and rape is worthy.
