"LOVE FOR TREE" - A Success Story

Government District Hospital started in the District in 2006. This is located in a very dry and arid area. There is no tree around. So people have to face a really tough time during summers. So, Bhagirathi made up his mind to plant a tree on the occasion of Independence Day 2008 (15-82008). He says, "It gives me a deep sense of pleasure. Whenever I pass by this area, I get down from my bicycle and have a look at the plant. In summer I make it a point to water it regularly. I am happy to see that the plant has grown up very first." The people of the locality appreciate Bhagirathi for this noble deed. It is worthy to mention that Bhagirathi has raised a small forest near the residential colony. Thus, he has become a face in the crowd. In other words, he has become an example for the young as well as old in the town.

A special programme namely Reproductive Child Health (RCH) was being implemented in the 14 villages of the district. At that time Bhagirathi was the only person involved in this programme. He used to organize awareness meetings, ensure that the pregnant women consult the doctors through ANM / ASHA workers, see that they are taking Calcium and Iron tablets regularly and going to the hospital for safe delivery. There is another attribute to his personality. In these years he had developed a great love for trees. In fact, his wife is also a tree-lover. So whenever they get time; they utilize its in gardening. In other words he has a deep urge for environmental conservation. Barrister Thakur Chhedilal Poddar

Resource Mobilisation
Development process in India in these years is yet to percolate into its rural sector upto its expected level. The lobe-sided urban development has taken its toll on rural sector as it is still languishing in abject poverty and backwardness. It is a matter of satisfaction that once known as third world country, India is in the race with some of the developing countries. But this development process cannot strike a balance unless the rural sector is developed unto its optimum level. Then what is the impedance in its way? It is just the lack of resource that is coming in its way. Unfortunately our internal resources are not enough to reach there due to its paucity. More over the government is unable to mobilise enough resources for this purpose. Then some non government organisations (NGOs) have voluntarily shouldered the responsibility to develop the much neglected rural sector. And in that case the fund earmarked by the government for rural development is proved insufficient to meet the need. In that case the onus is on these NGOs to mobilise resources for the task they have shouldered. In such a scenario, it is obvious to mobilise resource from outside the country to meet the demand. But it is not within the reach of each & any NGO. One has to extend its reach beyond the boundary of the country for such arduous task of resource mobilisation and it takes times & expertise to attain that height. Fortunately organisations like BISWA has attained that position after it's rigorously struggle to establish itself in the NGO sector. It has earned its credibility to that extent not only within the country but also outside its boundary, and that is too in a bonafide way. Such an achievement should be appreciated by one & all, as this entire exercise is attributing to the over all development of this country.
