ES 321-Strength of Materials 3 Engineering Mechanics 2nd Semester, 1999-2000 Engr. Tomas U. Ganiron Jr, MSCE

Course Description : Axial stress and strain; stresses for torsion and bending; combined stresses; indeterminate beams; and elastic instability.

Specific Objectives : Strength of Materials is the science which deals with method of calculation of durability, stiffness and stability of construction elements. The trained will receive basic knowledge of Strength of Materials, and also requirements and calculation of elastic rods. It is studied conditions of destructions at the big deformations. It is considered methods of the decision of static indefinite problems. The progress of technology confronts the engineer with a wide variety of problems connected with structural design (buildings, bridges, etc.), the design, manufacture and operation of various machines, motors and means of locomotion, such as automobiles, ships aircraft, and spaceships. Despite the diversity of problems that arise, their solution, at least in port, is based on certain general principles common to all of them, namely, the laws of durability, stiffness and stability of construction elements. Outcomes : By the end of the course the students should be able: (a) Familiarize with fundamental concepts of Strength of Materials and their engineering applications. (b) Introduce useful frameworks and various techniques for solving a wide variety of problems.
