Fatigue Test
Objective : To determine relative fatigue strength of the given samples used for different purposes. Specimen and apparatus Used : 1. Fatigue Testing Machine meeting requirements of IS 5075. 2. Sample rods of Aluminium, Brass, Mild Steel and Cast Steel. Procedure : 1. For this experiment we uses a rotating type fatigue machine to measure the properties related to fatigue in samples. 2. 1stly the average diameter of the sample (which is in the form of a cylinder) is noted. 3. The side load is removed so that sample can be fitted into it. 4. The chuck of driven part is opened by holding the key on its side during opening. 5. The sample is fixed into the machine and tightened. 6. Load is applied on the side rail resulting in application of bending moment over the sample. 7. The reading of Bending moment is noted. 8. The machine main supply is switched on and reading on the display is made to zero. 9. Rotating motor is switched on using the green button present on front side of the panel. 10. Once the machine starts rotaing the we wait till the machine stops due to breaking of the sample. 11. Reading of the rotations that sample undergone before breaking under given bending moment are noted. 12. Machine is switched off and broken part is unloaded and the same procedure is repeated for other samples.

Results: As the average value of the diameter as well as the length of all the specimen is almost same and are tested at same experimental conditions hence the value of rotations that sample undergone before braking can be used to compare their relative fatigue strength. Hence the obtained that arrangement of sample in order of increasing fatigue strength is: Aluminium < Brass < Cast iron As the value for mild steel is too low and highly deviated from theoretical values (expected even above cast iron) hence it is not mentioned in the above comparison. Discussion: The rod should be clamped in chucks symmetrically and properly tightened. Probably because of this reason only the sample of Mild steel broke down without undergoing proper no. of rotations. Diameter reading were taken at 3 different placed and then averaged as there is always a variation in diameter due to manufacturing errors. One must stay away from the machine while the rotation is done as some part of the sample might brake and may lead to injury to him.
