What is Design?

To design is to imagine and specify things that dont exist with the aim of bringing them into existence Design is an open-ended and ill-structured process, by which we mean there is no unique solution and that the candidate solution cannot be generated by an algorithm

Engineering Design is the systematic, intelligent generation and evaluation of specification for artifacts whose form and function achieve stated objective and satisfy multiple specified constraints.

Artifacts
Human-made objects

Form
An artifacts shape or geometry

Function
What artifact is supposed to do

Specifications
Precise descriptions of the properties of the object begin designed

ABET SAYS - Your Senior Design Course MUST Include

Engineering design is the process of devising a system, component, or process to meet desired needs. It is a decision making process (often iterative), in which the basic sciences, mathematics, and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective.

Among the fundamental elements of the design process are

Specify a Deliverable (product/device, system, component, or process) Establishment of Objectives and Criteria Literature Review Design - Synthesis - Analysis Construction/Development of Prototype Testing and Evaluation. Improvement/Refinement of deliverable Deliver Final Product

The engineering design component of a curriculum must include some of the following features:
Development of student creativity Use of open ended problems Development and use of design methodology Formation of design problem statements Formation of design specifications Consideration of alternative solutions Feasibility considerations Detailed system descriptions.

Further, it is essential to include a variety of realistic constraints such as

Economic factors Manufacturability Engineering Standards Safety Reliability Aesthetics Ethics Social impact.

Courses that contain engineering design normally are taught at the upper diversion level of the engineering program. Some portion of this requirement must be satisfied by at least one course which is primarily design, preferably at the senior level, and draws upon previous coursework in the relevant discipline.
