It was a warm night (red) across the Gulf Coast with readings unable to drop below the 50s (60s in LA and MS). Not far away to the north...the freeze line dipped into the OK Panhandle and Central Appalachians. Generallycolder than normal will be the rule over the next 7-10 days for the eastern 2/3 of the U.S.
One of the colder mornings upcoming will be next Sunday (continuing Monday) over the Central High Plains. Readings will be in the teens into NE and W KS and low 20s across most of KS and Iowa.

The storm that brings some southern cold early next week (potential freeze KS, OK, MO will also potentially bring snow as far south as KY and VA next Monday. Were we spoiled last year with northern planting starting in late March in the Corn Belt?

Currently, 29% of the nation is snow-covered (greatest for the date of past 5 years) . The N Plains is at 86% with an average depth of nearly 1 foot (11.7 in.)! Last year, during the nations abnormal March heat spell, the nation was only 11% snow covered and the N Plains a meniscal 0.8% (In the flood years of 2010 and 2011...both years... the N Plains was 47% covered at a depth of 5 inches).
