Student Development

Overview
Education at Raffles is not just about books and tests. During their 6 years at RI, every Rafflesian goes through a comprehensive student development programme that brings out their full potential as leaders and global citizens, equipped to serve family, community and nation. Students are immersed in a number programmes under these categories:

Co-Curricular Activities
Running parallel to the academic curriculum is a slew of exciting and enriching activities offered by the various Sports and Atheletics Groups, Performance and Musical Groups, Clubs and Societies and Uniformed and External Groups in RI. Every student must join at least one such group to have a more well-rounded school life and expose themselves to leadership opportunities and organisational challenges. Moreover, this is a platform on which students get to showcase their talents in a nonacademic setting and have some fun. In year 1, students are allocated to CCAs based on their talents and abilities, and their interests. Be it in Sports, Uniformed Groups, Musical Groups, or in the Clubs and Societies, the CCA programmes develop strong character traits in our students, developing their ability to lead, a spirit of service to others, as well as the Rafflesian commitment to excellence. It also develops leadertship and builds in the students the spirit of service to others. Through various activities, the programmes instill in the students Rafflesian spirit and the commitment to excellence. There are more than 110 student groups and organisations in RI that cater to most budding interests and deep-seated passions. For Year 1 - 4 CCAs info For Year 5 - 6 CCAs info

Character and Leadership Education

Every Rafflesian picks up the basics of leadership through a series of programmes carefully tailored to their age and experience. Our Character and Leadership Education (CLE) Curriculum, spanning Years 1-6, provides the theory; our students then put this knowledge into practice in cohort-wide programmes that includes the Malaysian Montage in Year 2 and Outward Bound School in Year 3. These activities provide leadership opportunities, encourage bonding and help to break the ice between new classmates. Those who wish to further develop their leadership skills and deepen their leadership experience often get involved in Student Leadership Bodies such as the Prefectorial Board, Student's Council, Co-Curricular Activity Leadership and Class Executive Committees.

There are also opt-in programmes in the first 4 years like Human Element: Raffles Overseas Immersion Programme (OIP), the Raffles Leadership Programme (RLP), and the Peer Support Leaders' Programme. Human Element, our Overseas Immersion Programme, pairs groups of Year 3 students with their peers from partner schools around the region. These include China, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. The students collaborate on a range of community service initiatives that take them into direct contact with the social issues faced by their host countries. The Raffles Leadership Programme is a groundbreaking leadership initiative offered in Year 3 that prepares our students for positions of leadership both in school and in life. The RLP develops independence, self-discipline and a spirit of risk-taking in our students by taking them out of their comfort zone and giving them a microcosmic experience of the realities of living in today's globalised world. Character-building and leadership courses continue in Years 5 - 6 with the Raffles Leadership Enrichment Through the Ages Programme, the Raffles Public Policy Programme and the Raffles Adventure Leadership Programme. The content of these leadership programmes runs deep. For example, students get the chance to taste working life in ministries and government statutory boards as part of the Raffles Public Policy Programme. Working on attachment, those with the potential to become national and community leaders in the future get to experience the intricacies of policy-making and community service at a high level.

Community Education Programmes

RI's Community Education programme is structured to give Rafflesians exposure to community involvement and service learning. Going beyond the simplicity of charity, Rafflesians are given opportunities to act and think critically about how they can make a difference in the lives of others. Our students are presented with the chance not only to serve and interact, but also to innovate community outreach, programmes. This develops in them an in-depth understanding of developmental, governance, sociological, economic and ecological issues. To begin with, students engage in various community initiatives under RI's Community Involvement Programme (CiP), including talks at CiP Assemblies and the Foundations of Service Learning (FOSL)programme, which teaches values, sustainable community partnership, principles of service learning and the ethics of community engagement. Students are then directly involved in their communities through CCA Cip, Service Learning projects as well as student-initiated student-sourced and school-sourced Volunteer Opportunities. Community Education does not end there. True to RI's vision of cultivating sophisticated and discerning community leaders, students may opt to take part in Community-Based Problem Solving, and Level CiP in Years 1 - 4. In Years 5 - 6, with the support of teacher-mentors, Rafflesians initiate and drive their own community projects as well as lead and participate in international projects with environmental and socio-economic significance. Service Learning Facilitation Skills helps Rafflesians become more aware of how their personal perceptions and biases influence their learning. This course teaches individual ownership of learning. Each year, over 100 students travel to other countries and engage in different projects as part of theInternational Service Learning Elective. The projects stretch for a whole year during which classroom sessions are conducted to help students effectively understand and address the social issues they will face on their trips. Finally, the Raffles Ecological Literacy Programme enables students to understand and care for our Earth and for the people that inhabit it. They are empowered to take responsibility and act for

social justice and environmental advocacy through local and international projects, field trips, seminars and discussions.

Citizenship Education Programmes

Citizenship Education in RI develops in Rafflesians a critical appreciation for the context and constraints faced by their country, as an understanding must exist before a deep sense of rootedness can come about. We foster this appreciation through the RI lecture Series, RI Ambassador Series, Learning Journeys, Raffles Speakers Series and the Encounter Defence Seminar. In addition to these, there are many optional programmes, inclding National Education Days, and Citizenship Studies. Another elective programme at Year 5 is the Raffles Meet-the-People Session Attachment Programme, a ten-week attachment Programme, a ten-week attachment to a Member of Parliament at his or her Meet-the-People Sessions. Here, students understand the issues and problems facing their fellow citizens first-hand and develop empathy for the grassroots
