What does the average American today, an ancient roman, and an obscure writer in 20th century Austria have in common? The same thing that almost all people have had in common at least since the beginning of recorded history; The privilege and the curse of being part of human society. The family, the government, friends and neighbors, all social contact, all the so called warmth that man craves so much, that separates him from the base animal, the structure that separates sapient man from instinctual animal, all is part of society. Despite all these benefits, or maybe, to an extent, because of them, there is struggle between man and the individual, a struggle that begins at birth and does end, cannot end until death.
