INTRODUCTION
Book tests are among the most popular effects in mentalism. But those tests, which require the performer to use his own book, are not always suitable for impromptu or intimate performances. The fact that the performer just happened to have a book with him would raise suspicion in many circumstances. I have always felt that, for impromptu work, the most logical book for a performer to have on his person would be a pocket dictionary. But even then, a pocket dictionary is still not something that a person would normally carry on a regular basis. (Unless, of course, he was attempting to learn the English language.) The Remote Viewing Testing Book not only overcomes all of these objections, but it allows the mentalist to perform some of the most astounding effects possible in the genre. The book, in this case, is not a novel or a dictionary. It is an official looking pocket-sized document that the mentalist claims is used to calculate random targets in remote viewing experiments. In a sense, then, the effect is not really a book test at all for the book is merely used to select a target location, which the performer will attempt to describe via his remote viewing abilities. This may well be one of the most unusual e-Books you have ever read. In addition to a description of the routines possible with The Remote Viewing Testing Book, it also includes document files which will allow you to print the necessary book on your computer or, if you wish, you can copy the necessary files to disk and take them to your local printer for printing, trimming (if necessary) and binding.

The Effects:
The book is specially designed to allow you to perform four different experiments in remote viewing 1) The routine described in detail in my book Extremely Remote which uses an invisible die to select a location; 2) Two matrix force variations which allow you to force one of two particular locations in an extremely fair looking manner; 3) An application of Royal Heaths die-cipering dice principle that allows you know what the target will be before the participants have even looked it up, and 4) Impossible Vision, the routine that required me to create the Remote Viewing Testing Book. In the first place. I honestly believe it is one of the most impossible looking effects in mentalism. Ill describe Impossible Vision first as it will give you a good idea of how the RV testing book operates.

Impossible Vision
Effect: The mentalist discusses remote viewing and offers to perform an actual test based on the procedures used by a remote viewing facility with which he is associated. He shows his audience the target selection book used by the facility and explains as follows: This book is used to randomly select targets for a remote viewing experiment. By targets, I mean physical locations, which the individual being tested will attempt to describe. In this book are over two hundred and fifty locations throughout the United States. You will notice that in the front and back of the book are sections containing maps. There are thirty-eight different maps, which cover all of the possible locations. The actual locations are not necessarily printed on the maps the maps are there just to show the general geographical locations of the targets. In the middle part of the book are the target listings. You will note that each target is numbered and that under the target name is a reference to the map, which covers the general area surrounding the target. And, finally, in the beginning of the book, there is a series of seventeen pages of random number generations. Random numbers are printed all over these pages. At the beginning of a test, one of the numbers is selected by an individual who has no idea what target may be associated with what number. As he explains the sections of the book, the mentalist shows the applicable sections to various audience members.

[If you havent done so already, now would be a good time to look at the .doc or .pdf file so you can see for yourself what the book looks like.} The mentalist asks for two participants to randomly select a target. He hands the book to one of them and then moves well away from both of them while the target selection is made. The participant holding the book is asked to open it to the section of random number pages. As I showed you before, each of those pages contains a series of random fourdigit numbers. Turn to anyone of those pages and point to any number. Show the number to [name of the other participant]. Do not call out the number or even whisper it. Just point to it. Addressing the other volunteer, the performer says, Can you see the number he is pointing to? Good. Dont say the number aloud. I would like you to take the book now and stand back a bit so that no one but you can see what the actual target will be. In the center of the book is a numbered list of all of the targets. Please look up the target. When you have found it, put your finger on it and show it to [the first spectators name}. Again, do not say anything out loud. After the first spectator notes the location, the performer tells him to remember the number of the map that appears under the location. I would like you to take the book back now and find the map upon which the target appears. When you have found it, show it to your partner and I would like both of you to imagine that you see the target location somewhere on the map. The name of the target may not actually appear on the map, but imagine that you see it there. After he has found the map and they are both looking at it, the mentalist says, Now I will try to visualize myself at the actual target location. I only need to know one thing from you, and one thing only. Am I looking for a target that is man made, like a building, a monument or other type of structure, or am I looking for something created by Nature? Good, close the book now and just concentrate on the location. Pretend that you are both there. The performer retrieves the book, points out to the rest of the audience that the two participants could be thinking of any one of hundreds of location, and puts the book back into his pocket. Without asking the spectators anything else, the performer describes a location. He starts out generally and then gets increasingly specific. Finally, he picks up a piece of paper and writes something down. He folds the paper once and hands it to a third spectator for safekeeping. Addressing the two participants he says,

And now, for the first time, I would like you to tell everyone what the target location was. They announce the target and it is immediately apparent that the performers description was quite accurate. The spectator holding the paper is asked to open it and read aloud what the mentalist had written. It is the exact name of the target location.

Method
If you read the description of the effect over again, you will see why I have named this Impossible Vision. There seems to be no explanation other than remote viewing (or perhaps telepathy). The description accurately describes what the audience sees a location is freely selected from a book containing hundreds of locations. The number of locations in the book can be verified by letting the audience look through the book for themselves at the beginning of the routine. Without saying anything to the performer, two spectators select a number at random and then a location. All the performer asks, after they have found a location, is whether the target is manmade or natural. But as soon as he gets the answer, he knows exactly what the target is! The method is based on two elements. The first is that the book is printed on card stock and is tightly bound (stapled). Thus, it has a natural tendency to spring shut. The spectators have to hold it open while they are looking at it. This is what makes the second, and major, aspect of the method infallible. The performer needs only to watch the spectators while the selection is made and he will be able to narrow the target down to two selections- one man-made and the other natural. Despite the fact that over two hundred locations actually appear in the book, it is only possible (in this routine) for the spectators to select one of thirty-two locations. Thanks to the construction of the book (which took nearly forever!) and the actions of the spectators in finding the target, those thirty- possibilities are rapidly reduced to just two. (Additionally, the performer need not memorize what the possible locations are because the book itself will tell him!) The spectators take turns looking up things in the book and then pointing them out to each other. The first selection made is a random four-digit number from among the sixteen pages of random numbers, which appear at the beginning of the book. These begin at page 7 of the book .If you want, you can bookmark this before giving the book to the participants.

Look at the .doc or .pdf file and you will notice that while each page appears to be covered with different numbers, there are actually only thirty-two numbers visible on each two-page spread. They are the same numbers that are visible on the other pages, but on each page, their position has been altered. Due to the manner in which the pages have been prepared, it looks as if a choice is being made from among hundreds of possibilities. Here is what just one of these pages looks like:

Note that all of the numbers appearing on left hand pages are odd, and all of the numbers appearing on right hand pages are even. (Disregard, for now, the cover page of the number section, which contains a table of three digit numbers. It plays no part in this effect. Ill explain in a bit what it is for, as well as the meaning of the strange table on the title page.) Just remember that the performer makes it clear that a number is to be chosen from among the sixteen random series that are found between pages 7 and 22. As soon as the first spectator points out a number to the second, you will have immediately cut the number of possibilities in half. Because of the natural stiffness of the book, the spectator will have to hold it with both hands while pointing out the number to his partner. It is easy, even from across the room, to see whether he is pointing to the left or right hand page.

All you have to remember is Left or Right. Let us suppose, in this example, that he has pointed to number 2624. Since all of the even numbers are on right hand pages, you will see that he is pointing at the right hand page. Remember RIGHT. [IMPORTANT- Right or Left is from the point of view of the spectator. In this case, he is pointing to the page on his right] Thats step one. There are only three more and they are just as simple. Next the second spectator takes the book and looks up the target (In the large middle section of the book that contains the target names and map numbers. When he finds the target, he is asked to point it out to the first spectator. Since location number 2624 appears on page 73 of the book, he will be pointing at the right hand page. Again, remember RIGHT. (So now, you are holding on to the thought right-right) (The page numbers themselves have nothing to do with the operation of the book. The fact that 3218, an even number, appears on page 73 is irrelevant. All that is important is that the spectator is pointing to the right hand page.) Next, he asks the first spectator to remember the map number that appears under the name of the target. Here is a copy of the page at which they are looking at this stage:

You showed them earlier that there were two sections of maps one in the front of the book and one in the back so this instruction will be clear to them. When you ask him to look up the appropriate map, he will open the book near the FRONT. Thats the third thing you remember. So know you are holding on to this thought RIGHT-RIGHT-FRONT. The next step is for the first spectator to point out the map to his partner.
(The reason you have the spectators step back from each other while they make there respective selections is, allegedly, to insure that they dont confuse the performer with conflicting thoughts. In fact, the reason is to provide a rationale for one spectator to point out the proper item to the other. After you have done the routine a few times, though, you will find that the stiffness of the book will make it obvious which side of the book they are looking at without even asking them to point. Just watch their eyes and you will know where they are looking.)

As you may have guessed, the maps appear on both right and left hand pages. And that is what you look for next are they looking at a map on the right or the left? Returning to the present example, map # 8 is in the FRONT of the book on the RIGHT page.

You are now holding on to the thought RIGHT-RIGHT-FRONT-RIGHT. You have now narrowed the possible targets to just two.

You dont necessarily know what they are yet. (Unless you have memorized the entire book, which is NOT necessary.) One of those targets is natural and one is man made. In this example, when the performer asks which it is, they will likely say man-made. (If they look confused, dont worry about it. In just a second, you will know exactly what the two possibilities are and you will see for yourself what might have confused them. If necessary, a brief pump, such as (in this case) I get something about space ships or something like that. Does that make any sense to you at all?) You are now holding on to your final thought, which is: RIGHT-RIGHT-FRONT-RIGHT MAN-MADE. Think of this as the letters: R R F R M Now ask for the book back. Before you put it back in your pocket, briefly flip through the pages for some people near the front, emphasizing the impossibility of anyone knowing what the target could actually be, for As you can see, there are hundreds of possibilities in the target book, and only the two of them know what the target is. As you close the book, take a brief look at the strange chart that appears on the very first page of the book. It will tell you what the location is immediately. (It will also tell you what the Natural alternative possibility is. Here is the chart. (For now, just agree with me that it is strange.)

The chart comes under a heading, which says Associative Remote Viewing Calculator ARV 0301. That can mean whatever you want it to as far as the spectators are concerned (should anyone ask.) It is really a crib sheet with the clues you need for three different effects, which can be performed with the book. Ignore the column that goes down the center of the chart the one with the letters AONCE in the center of the top down. The purpose of the bold letters in the chart is to help you visually divide things up. You are looking for the sequence R R F R M. Since the sequence starts with RIGHT, I have conveniently put the right sequences on the right of the chart. The bold letter R in the top row marks the top of the column containing the R sequences. The top half of the column contains the sequences beginning with RR and the bottom half of the column contains the sequences beginning with R L. Conversely; you will find the sequences beginning with LL on the top of the left column, and those beginning with LR on the bottom half. Thus, before you even take a glance at the chart, you will immediately know which area to look at. (You can, of course, make up any sort of cheat sheet you like, but this is the one that works well for me.) Look down the right hand column for your sequence R R F R M. It is the fourth one down. Look at the letters that follow the sequence. They are: A R E A F, which stands for Area Fifty-one! Just above it, you will see the sequence R R F R N, which is what you would look at if they said Natural instead of man-made. Take the time to examine the chart carefully and compare the following list of possible selections to what you find on it. From here on you will be able, by carefully examining the book and rereading the above description, to discover how and why the book works and how the abbreviations in the chart serve as reminders for the names on the list. All of the locations are major national landmarks and you will add greatly to your presentation by reading up a little on the ones you may not be familiar with. I stated in the beginning that the book could also be used for to matrix, or magic square type forces. You are probably already familiar with the force, which has appeared before in many variations, in which three spectators are each given three index cards. Each of their cards contains a different single digit number. For those who dont recall the force, here it is briefly: You first show that each of the nine cards has one of the digits from one to nine written upon it. (Or you can write them on blank cards as you explain.) The cards are arranged in the following order from the top down: 8 t 6 3 5 7 4 9 2. False mix the cards and give three to each spectator. The first gets the cards 8 1 6, the second gets the numbers 3 5 6, .the third gets the numbers 4 9 2. Ask one of the spectators to call out any one of his digits. Write that digit on a large pad and state that it will form the first figure of a randomly formed three-digit number. Tell him to toss the card bearing that number aside, and to keep the other two. Ask another spectator to call out one of his numbers. Write that one down to the right of the first. Tell him, to toss the card he just name aside, as well. Finally, have the third spectator call out one of his three digits and to toss it aside. So far, all is fair. You have obtained a random three-digit number. But now you point out to the first spectator that he has two number cards left in his hand. Would he please call out one of them? The mentalist writes this number down underneath the left hand digit of the three digit number he wrote previously. And so the process is repeated with each spectator calling out one of their two remaining numbers and tossing these aside once theyve called them. There are now two 3-digit numbers, one underneath each other, on the pad.

Each spectator has one card left. The performer points out that know one could have known before-hand what the sequence of theses randomly formed numbers could have been. You each have one number left. We will use them to form a third random three-digit number and then we shall add them all together. Since the cards given to each of the spectators at the outset were in sets of three which each totaled fifteen, it is a sure thing that the total will be 1665. In the remote viewing book, the target location at 1665 is the Statue of Liberty. You can write about visiting the statue in a dream if you like and seal your notes into an envelope, which you hand out at the beginning of the routine. After the random number is obtained, have someone look up the target in the book and then compare it with what they find in the sealed envelope. A more subtle version of the force is this: After the three spectators have been given numbers, ask someone else in the audience to point to one volunteer who they wish to see eliminated. Whoever is pointed to be told to tear his cards up and return to his seat. No one could have known beforehand, says the mentalist, which of the three would be eliminated and which three numbers, therefore, would be eliminated from consideration. The performer now proceeds to obtain three random TWO-digit numbers from the remaining two spectators. Again, since the numbers each has been given total fifteen, the final total will be 165. Target number 165 in the book is The Chrysler Building, NY. Those of you who have read my Extremely Remote will note that the book is also set to perform that effect. By rolling his invisible die three times as described in that book and then looking up the target represented by the three different single numbers thrown, he can only arrive at one of the following targets. Finally, here is the purpose of the first page of the number sequence section of the book the one that looks like this:

In this variation, which I think you will like very much, the target number is selected by passing the book, opened to this page, to five different spectators. The first is asked to call out any number from the first column. The second to call out any number from the second column, the third from the third column, and so on. The performer points out that each spectator has a choice of six different numbers to choose from and that the total of possible combinations that can be called is actually 7776. The numbers called out are written down by another spectator, who is asked to total them up. Since these are the numbers that appear on Royal Heaths Die-Cyphering dice, there are actually only thirty-seven possible totals. The performer will know the answer before the numbers are added simply by adding together the last digit of each number called. The result will be a two-digit number representing the last two digits of the target number. The first two digits are the difference between the two-digit number and fifty.

For example, suppose that the spectators chose the following numbers, one from each column. As you read them, just mentally add the last digits of each number. 483, 147, 657, 267, 971 The total of the last digits 3, 7, 7, 7 and 1 is twenty-five. The first two digits of the final four-digit target number are the difference between twenty-five and fifty. Thus, the final total will be 2525. The beauty of the way in which the Heath principle works with the remote viewing test, is that you DONT HAVE TO FIGURE OUT THE FIRST TWO DIGITS. Sure, it is not hard to do so, but why distract yourself with too much mental work. Just remember the two-digit total of the last digits of the five numbers selected, in this case 25. Take a look at the cue sheet again and find the two boldface columns of numbers. Even numbers are in the right column (of course) and odd numbers are on the left. Just to the left of the number25 you will see the letters L I T B I. That stands for Little Big Horn which is target number 2525 as shown on the sample target page above. So there you have the basics of the other routines that can be performed with my Remote Viewing Book. It was a difficult project to put together, but I have gotten a good deal of satisfaction out of the resulting effects. I am sure that you will too. You will require the following materials to put the book together by yourself: a printer; a package of 100 4 x 6 blank index cards; some colored index card stock for the cover; a heavyduty stapler (or whatever else you want to use to bind the pages together); and some colored decorative tape which will be used to cover the staples and give the finished book an attractive and official appearance. The documents you will use to create the book are in the following files included with this e-Book: rvtestingbook.doc rvtestingbook.pdf These were prepared and formatted in Word 2000. The page size is set at 4 inches by 6 inches. It is very important that you print the pages exactly as they appear and in the manner I will explain shortly If you do not have Word on your computer, you can use the .pdf file to create your book. In this case, you may have to print on 8.5 by 11 index card stock, which you can cut to the proper size after you have printed the book. Again, though, it is very important that the finished book be paginated and laid out exactly as it is in the doc and pdf files. If you change things

around and accidently start a section on the left hand page rather than the right, for example, the Left, Right, Back, Front method simply will not work. And finally, here is a list of values you should note if you decide to use the Heath dice to make the selection. They are not include in the cheat sheet because they are not among the target numbers which can be selected in the forcing section of the book. For the sake of completeness I should mention that it is a good idea, despite the cheat sheet, to memorize the target names and their numerical values.
