Partnership for Problem
Corporate Socia l Responsibi lity has become an intrin sic part of a Corporate's Mitigation
functioning. The CSR department exclu sive l de otes itself towards build ing strong
relation shi p w ith the commun ities in the Corporate's operational area. However, Mutually beneficial relationship
w ith a grow ing resentment amongst people, their increasing aspiration s and between the corporate and
inability to get directly involved w ith the communi ties, it is suggestive th at GOs communities
ca n pl ay th e role of a facilitating agency.

BISWA as a National NGO


Bharat Integrated Social Welfa re Agency, BISW A was founded by a Social
Entrepreneur Shri Khirod Chandra Malick in the year 1994 from Sambalpur,
Western Orissa.

BISWA and Corporate Social Responsibility
Displacement issue is the burning issue in Western Orissa as it is moving
towards an industrialized part of the state. Alongwith Orissa, BISWA has started
work ing in Jharkhand as well, which is also growingly becoming industrialized.
BISWA is giving priority for the better rehab ilitation and livelihood creation of
the displaced, for which an active collaboration w ith the industries is sought.
BISWA is working with a special thrust on Social Capacity Building which is
reflected in its core functioning of Self Help Groups. The community with no
experience on savings and cred it, book keepin g and micro-enterprise is support
wi th capacity building to enab le sustainabil ity of BISWA's intervention, once
the handholding period is over.

1 Entry Point Activity (Community Mobilisatio n and Awa reness Generation)

3 Capacity Building and Trainings
faci litation initiatives:
A two pronged approach is adopted for Capacity Building:
i) For the Corporate Staff ii) For the PAPs
Capacity Building workshops and trainings for the Corporate Staff will aim
at increasing the capac ities of the staff to conduct CSR activities with
emphasis on Socio-economic survey, need assessment study,
entrepreneurship deve lopment, etc. as well as workshops on Team Building,
Communication skills, Documentation for the direct benefit of the staff.
Capacity Building workshops and trainings for the PAP will include
awareness generation and skill development.
4 eBO Formation (SHGs, Farmers' Groups, etc)
Community Based Organisations, essentially Self Help Groups (SHGs) and
Farmers' Group (FGs) will be organized with the aim at promoting the
economic progress of the area. The main component under this programme
is Micro Finance.

5 Entrepreneurship Development Programme


The CBOs, once made functional will be credit linked alongwith additional
training and marketing linkages required for the specific enterprise
development. Socio-economic survey and the subsequentVDLP will form
the basis for the identification of an enterprise and the required assistance
for its development.

6 Agriculture based Intervention


This will involve identification of agricultural practices, soil testing and
provision for land and water development. The aim of the intervention will
be to increase crop yield and land productivity. Measures in irrigational
facilities will also be taken as a part of the agricultural intervention. The
micro finance programme incorporates financial assistance for agriculture
requ i rements, for seeds, ferti Iizers, etc.

7 Education
The programme will focus on adult literacy with an emphsis on functional
literacy. This will be woven into the SHG meetings and gatherings as a
means of starting an informal class.
Primary Education will be facilitated through setting up of innovative
schools.

8 Health
Health programme is promoted through organising of Health camps and
centres and providing medical facilities to the communities. In this
programme, BISWA works in direct collaboration with the district
administration, availing the existent funds.

9 'Water and Sanitation


Alongwith installation of Individual and Commun ity Toi lets and Bathing
Rooms, drinking water sources and construction of drains, BIS\ A has
worked on the maintenance of the sanitation system and clean ing of the
village! colonies. In the Vedanta Rehabilitated Colony in Jharsuguda, BISWA
will be concentrating on the provision for maintenance of the water and
sanitation system and colony cleaniliness and hygiene.

10 Plantation/ Forestry
Afforestation in the corporate area, promoting social forestry and plantation
in the community area. The plantation will aim at identifying those species BISWA'
which have better market value and can have beneficial affect on the soil.
