Sri Lanka's HNB in mobile banking drive: Sri Lanka's Hatton National Bank [HNB:LKR157.0], which has more than two million customers, has launched a mobile banking platform to which it is planning to draw 300,000 users in the next three years, officials said. Chief executive Rajendra Theagarajah said HNB had first launched a basic text message based mobile banking service as far back as 2005 but it had only 13,000 users, but mobile phones now spanned the entire country. He said the bank planned to covert 300,000 of its 2.5 mn accounts holders to use mobile banking services within the next two to three years. The service comes in three versions targeted at high end users with i-phones and smart phones to which an app can be downloaded, mid-range phones and less sophisticated basic phones. Customers could check balances, transfer funds within accounts and to other account holders, pay utility bills, and also make payments to a growing list of vendors that HNB was signing up, schools, insurers and retailers. [Source: www.lbo.lk] SL gets LKR59 bn from Japan: Japan has agreed to provide Japanese Yen 41 bn (approximately LKR59 bn) for four major development projects following a request from the Government. The four projects in priority sectors include power and energy, roads and bridges, disaster management and water supply with the objective of enhancing economic growth further by improving economic infrastructure. Palali airport to be upgraded to intl level: Sri Lanka is to develop the Palali airstrip in Jaffna as an international airport, mainly to cater to Indian traffic. An official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation said that they would seek Indian assistance for this venture. The development of the North is also of high priority in the governments agenda and an international airport in the peninsula would boost its regional economy in a big way. When fully operational, the Palali airport would also cater to the growing Indian traffic. In addition, the government has also decided to invest on a second runway at the Colombo airport, enabling even the large A380s to land in Colombo. Financial assistance for this purpose is expected from Japan. [Source: www.dailynews.lk] SL fast tracking China trade through Hong Kong: Sri Lanka is now trying to fast track its trade with China through the worlds most globalized economy Hong Kong. There is vast, unrealized trade potential between Hong Kong and Sri Lanka, which we need to explore jointly. The Hong Kong Trade Development Council with its vast network is an ideal partner for Sri Lankan companies to explore partnership opportunities with the Chinese market, said Rishad Bathiudeen, Minister of Industry and Commerce of Sri Lanka. The arrival of Hong Kong based Shangri-La hotels to Sri Lanka is now well known. Hong Kong is the second most globalized economy according to Ernst & Young and is Sri Lankas 19th trading partner in terms of exports, which stood at USD105 mn in 2012. The bilateral trade between both countries has been fluctuating and in 2012, it reported USD689.33 mn. Apparel, gems and tea are our main exports. We also believe that there is vast, unrealized trade potential, between the two countries, which we need to jointly explore. Todays seminar is an important step in this direction and I am pleased to see strong participation from Sri Lankas private sector as well, Bathiudeen said. [Source: www.ft.lk]
