The Mentor Legion

by Quinton Woeppel Formerly the Index Adeptus Astartes Legion number 888 belonged to the Star Scorpions but after various warp incidents and redundant gene-seed problems the number was retired. The number was revived some years later when an entirely new geneseed was cultivated from storage banks on Earth. The New chapter is called the Mentor Legion. This new chapter is the testing ground for new Wargear of the Adeptus Mechanicus. The Legion Imperial Commander Nisk Ran-Thawll is given the option to refuse to field test any new equipment though there is no record of him ever having done so. The Mentor Legion is a training and information gathering legion and as such is never sent into the field full force. At any given time the Mentor legion may have up to 25 Tactical squads out on loan to other commands and up to 10 of it's Elite cadre on missions. These units will be explained below.... Any Imperial Army unit or Astartes Chapter may include a single squad of the Mentor Chapter in their battle orders. This squad can be one of the rank and file Mentor Tactical Squads or may be a group of Mentor Elite Cadre. Rank and file Squads: These are organized into the standard 10 man imperial squads. They may be split into 2 units of 5 men each as a standard chapter is able to do. If the unit is split it must be into the Targeting-Web section and the Missile Launcher sections Mentor Tactical Marines....................................................400 pts per squad

WEAPONS: Targetting-Web section: 5 Marines armed with Mentor Bolt guns w/ targetting web, Frag &Krak grenades Missle Launcher Section: 1 Marine armed with Missle launcher(with Frag, Krack, and Plasma missles)and Bolt Pistol, 4 Marines armed with Bolt guns & Frag grenades. To convert the Missle section Bolt guns to Mentor Bolt guns add 5 pts per model and all models must be given the upgrade.(+20 pts) ARMOR: All Mentor Marines are armored in Mentor Power Armor. this gives a standard 3+ Power Armor save but gives the benefit of being coated with Cameoline and giving sensors to all Marines.

WARGEAR: As previously stated the Targetting-Web section is equipped with a Tagetting-Web. This is described later. SPECIAL: All standard rules for Marines such as rapid fire and Break tests apply to Mentor Legion Marines. Mentor Elite Cadre...............................................................400Pts per squad

SQUAD: The Elite Cadre consists of 5 Mentor Marines WEAPONS: 1 Marine armed with Mentor Bolt Gun, Plasma pistol, Powerfist, and Frag grenades. 1 Marine armed with Mentor Bolt Gun, Plasma pistol, Flamer, and Frag grenades. 1 Marine armed with Mentor Bolt Gun, Plasma pistol, Frag grenades, and Melta Bombs. 2 Marines armed with Mentor Bolt Guns, Plasma pistol, Power swords, and Frag grenades. ARMOR: All Mentor Elite Cadre wear Mentor Power armor which gives a standard 3+ save as well as the benefits of Cameoline and a Sensor. WARGEAR: All marines are linked to a Targetting-Web. In addition the Elite Cadre has 2 other items of specialty gear; they are the Timewarper and the Shift field. These last 2 items are model specific and must be given to models at the beggining of the game. SPECIAL: All Standard Marine rules are used for Mentor Legion Elite Cadre such as Rapid Fire and Break Tests. In addition, the Elite Cadre may be split up to lead various units with the Inspire ability which gives all troops led by a Elite Mentor +1 to all Ld rolls. If the Elite Mentors are split up then the Targetting-Web becomes usable only by those Mentors still in squad formation(eg, 2 or more Mentor Elites together). The Timewarper and Shift field may be used normally by the models carrying them on the units that they join. New Wargear: usable by Mentor Legion only. Mentor Bolt gun: This is the only weapon that may be tied into the Targetting web. It fires as a standard Bolt gun but has a -2 save modifier (instead of -1) due to improved ammunition and better feeding system. Targetting-Web: This is unique system of Armor modifications and Neural implants that is not a single piece of equipment. All marines tied into it have had extensive training in the use and care of the Targetting-Web. The 'Web allows up

to 5 models to simultaniously target and shoot at exactly the same point in space. There are some limitations as noted below but the combined firepower is effective against vehicles and powerful individuals. All models using the web must be in standard unit coherency of 2" to use the web. Any models outside the 2" are not counted for modifiers to the final result. To use the web, one "Marker" model is nominated to sight a target. Range, cover, and speed modifiers for the Marker are used. (However a line of sight must be drawn from other firers to contribute to modifiers and all firers must be within standard range) If the Marker rolls to hit and succeeds then the rest of the squad will also hit with the following effects:
# of firers 1 2 3 4 5 Strength of Hit +1 +2 +3 +4 Additional Damage +1 +1 +2 Additional Save Modifiers -1 -1 -2 -2

No more than 5 firers may operate through a single web. Timewarper: The timewarper is another advanced Imperial Technology being field tested by the Mentor Legion. The Timewarper draws tiny portions of warpspace into itself and converts this energy to affect time in a localized sphere around the item. The effect of this Timewarping is that models in this distortion area sense time as having slowed down and are able to move faster while inside the sphere. Effects are detailed on the table below. The Timewarper is small and man portable and must be given to a specific model. The Timewarper will accomadate up to ten persons as long as all potential targets are within 1" of one another (at 1" coherency). As the device is used roll a D6 and consult the following table:
Roll 1 2-3 4-5 6 Timewarper Function The Dilation has no effect Models are able to move at Mx2 Models are able to move at Mx3 Models are able to move at Mx4

The Dilation effect prevents models from firing in the turn that the Timewarper was used even if they did not move or moved only normal distance, in addition if the Timewarper was used to move into HtH combat then the Marines count as confused from the distortion and suffer a -1 WS penalty on the 1st round of combat.

The Capacity to draw energy is limited and the Timewarper may only be used every other turn as it recharges (similar to a Plasma gun). The device may only be used on living troops and vehicles are not able to use the Timewarper Shift Field: The shift field is a new form of protective device developped by the Adeptus Mechanicus that the Mentor legion is also testing. The Field is contained in a Back pack and incurs a 1/2" movement penalty on the carrying model (M3 1/2" for Elite Cadre). The shift field distorts the light around the squad making it difficult to see the Marines well. All models within 6" are at -1 to be hit from shooting attacks. HtH opponents will be inside the field and are not affected. Models inside the field are able to fire out of the field with no penalty
