RMP40 bringing probing benefits to a wider range of CNC machine tools

RMP40 is the latest radio transmission probe from Renishaw. By combining the proven Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) transmission of the highly successful and award-winning RMP60 probe with the ultracompactness of the award-winning OMP40, the RMP40 can be used across a wide range of machine tool applications.

Benefits
Ultra-compact At only 40 mm in diameter and 50 mm in length, the RMP40 pairs the ultra-compactness of the OMP40 with Renishaws FHSS radio transmission. This combination makes the RMP40 ideally suited for use on all sizes of machine tools, particularly multi-axis and mill-turn applications in which line-of-sight between the probe and its interface cannot be maintained. Robust and reliable The RMP40 continues Renishaws high standards for reliability and is designed to resist the harshest machine conditions. Multiple probe mode Multiple probe mode is available to allow individual application of multiple probes with a single RMI receiver. Simple retrofit Utilising the same shank mounting arrangement as the OMP40 and OMP40-2, this new product gives existing users a simple retrofit option for radio transmission.

Features
Meets the radio regulations of the EU and countries including the USA, Japan and Canada. Probe repeatability of 1.0 m (0.00004 in) is certified at 480 mm/min (1.57 ft/min) with a 50 mm (1.97 in) stylus. Error-free channel hopping radio transmission. Incorporates Renishaw's Trigger Logic. This allows configurable probe settings to be changed by systematically deflecting the stylus until the correct colour configuration is observed on the LED display. Powered by two AA Lithium Thionyl Chloride (3.6 V) batteries. Battery life is in excess of 400 hours continuous use, or in excess of 170 days at 5% usage. The probe turn-on method is configurable between M code or spin-on. The probe turn-off method is configurable between M code, spin-off and timer-off. The probe is sealed to IPX8 and designed for the machine tool environment.

Probe modes
The RMP40 probe can be in one of three modes: 1. Standby mode The RMP40 is waiting for a switch-on signal to be received; 2. Operational mode Activated by one of the switch-on methods described below. In this mode the RMP40 is now ready for use; 3. Configuration mode The Trigger Logic configuration method allows the following settings to be configured.

Probe settings
Multiple probes RMP40 probes can be configured, using Trigger Logic, to have the same radio ID. This allows multiple radio probes to be used with a single RMI (spin-on is required). Acquisition mode System set-up is achieved using Trigger Logic and powering on the RMI. Partnering is only required during initial system set-up and can take place anywhere within the operating envelope.

Switch-on / switch-off methods

RMP40 switch-on method Switch-on options are configurable Radio-on Radio switch-on is commanded by machine output. RMP40 switch-off method Switch-off options are configurable Radio-off Radio switch-off is commanded by machine output. A timer automatically switches the probe off 90 minutes after the last trigger if it is not turned off by machine output. Timer-off (timeout) Timeout will occur 12, 33 or 134 seconds (user configurable) after the last probe trigger or reseat. Spin-on Spin at 500 rev/min for 1 second minimum. Spin-off Spin at 500 rev/min for 1 second minimum. A timer automatically switches the probe off 90 minutes after the last trigger if it is not spun. Timer-off (timeout) Timeout will occur 12, 33 or 134 seconds (user configurable) after the last probe trigger or reseat. 2 seconds maximum. Note: The 2 seconds starts from the moment the spindle reaches 500 rev/min. Switch-on time 1 second maximum Note: This assumes a good radio communication link. In a poor RF environment this may rise to a maximum of 3 seconds.

Performance envelope
The RMP40 transmission envelope and range is shown below. The probe system should be positioned so that the optimum range can be achieved over the full travel of the machines axes including the tool magazine. It is recommended to face the RMI in the direction of the machine spindle and tool magazine. If the probe is not in range when in the tool magazine, use spin switch-on. If radio switch-on is used in this case, it could take up to 30 seconds to start the probe. The RMP40 and RMI must be within a mutual operating envelope. The operating envelope shows line-of-sight performance. However, radio transmission does not require line-of-sight as long as any reflected radio path is less than the 15 m (49.2 ft) system operating range.

The stylus trigger force is the force exerted on the component when the probe triggers. However, the maximum force applied to the component will occur after the trigger point and will be greater than the trigger force. The magnitude depends on a number of factors affecting probe overtravel including measuring speed and machine deceleration. If the forces applied to the component are critical, contact Renishaw for further information.
