Authorization
Use of this feature requires subscription to IHS Well/Production data as well as Enerdeq authorization, via a Username and Password. If you currently access the Enerdeq Browser, use that same Username and Password in PETRA. If you need to establish this authorization, contact your IHS Account Manager. If you are unsure of the name of your Account Manager, you may contact one of the Customer Care sources listed below: Customer Care telephone: 1-800-IHS-CARE (1-800-447-2273); select options for Enerdeq or PETRA IHS Enerdeq Customer Care email: productcallcenter@ihs.com PETRA Customer Care email: petrasupport@ihs.com
Initial Setup
You access Direct Connect from the Project menu on the Main module of PETRA. Project>Direct Connect>IHS US Enerdeq or Canada>Import This displays the submenu selections for importing well and production data, as shown below.
The first time you access the Direct Connect feature, PETRA prompts you for your Username and Password.
Enter the information and then click the OK button. An authorization file is created and placed in the root of the geoplus1 folder for later use. Should your Username or Password change, you can update the information using the Direct Connect option Change UserID and Password, as shown above.
An Enerdeq Database Source screen may display. It provides selection of the U.S. or Canada Well Loader; this depends upon your subscription entitlements.
Select the Database Source, in this case U.S., and click the OK button. The IHS (US) Well Loader dialog displays once the authorization and connection are verified.
NOTE: For new projects, the only well selection options available are to select Wells and AOI from a Map or use a saved Enerdeq Query.
This dialog screen provides the following options: Wells and AOI: choose method for selecting wells; for new projects, only option A is available Import Options: select the data to load and other import options Queries: select wells from a list of your saved Enerdeq queries; available for new or existing PETRA projects. Report: provides a real time visual of the well data import 297: allows you to save a 297 file from the chosen options
The following example zooms into the area around Wise County, Texas.
Use the Set AOI button to select and set the area of interest.
Only the wells falling within the AOI (red rectangle) are imported.
Option A1: Accept Current AOI The AOI rectangle covers an area greater than just Wise County. If this is satisfactory, click the Get Count button followed by the Use Wells button. This creates the UWI list, closes the map view, and returns to the IHS (US) Well Loader screen, which shows the current well count (18,186), the AOI rectangle Lat/Lon extents, and additional selection options.
Option A2: Filter Current AOI To reduce the number of wells to just those within Wise County, you can filter the current well selection by clicking the button, which uses County Codes to filter the data.
If the code is unknown, use the Lookup button. Since county codes may be the same from state to state, enter the state code for Texas, TX, click the OK button, and then type in the county name, Wise.
Click the OK button on the County screen. Petra processes the information and returns the three digit county code of 497.
You can enter multiple counties, and save templates for future use. Select the OK button. On the IHS (US) Well Loader screen, select the to apply the filter. The total well count reduces to 10, 188. button
Import Options
These options include adding/updating wells, data to load, and selection of formation tops, among others. General Tab This section controls general data loading parameters.
These options determine whether new wells are added to the project and/or if existing wells are updated. Select appropriate options from the dropdown lists. In addition, you can set the number of digits (10, 12, or 14) for API Numbers when adding new wells. The default is 14 digits. CAUTION: If 10 or 12 digit API numbers are used, then data from different completions are merged.
Data to Load
This section provides a list of data types to import. Choose those of interest to you.
8 June 30, 2011
Misc Options
This section contains a list of additional data types and special conditions used during import.
Restrict Wells by Last Update Date Uses the last update date to control which wells are updated Load Data into Initial Completions Only Only API numbers ending in 0000 are stored in the project. Data from the 0001, 0002, etc. completions are merged with the 0000 well. Skip IC Numbers (Load API Numbers Only) Does not load Internal Control (IC) numbers (those assigned prior to API number)
CAUTION: If you choose to load the IC number, you may later end up with duplication of wells once the API number is assigned and project wells updated, as there will be 2 UWIs for the same well.
Update BLANK Header Fields Only The following fields are updated when they are blank in the project database:
Well Name and Well Number Lease Name and Lease Number Fm at TD TD and TVD Platform, Water Depth, Whipstock Depth Directional Indicator Lat Lon Source Surface and Bottom Hole Lat and Lon Operator and Historical Operator Field Name Producing Formation Elevation Geol Province Spud Date, Completion Date, Permit Date, Rig Release Date Abandoned Date, First Report Date, Last Activity Date

10
Produce Detailed Load Report Displays a detailed report of the import process which can be saved for later review
Fm Tops Tab This screen allows you to restrict the formation tops imported into your project. Click the Download Top Selection List to obtain a list from Enerdeq of all formation top names contained within the list of UWIs. The list shows the number of occurrences for each formation top. NOTE: This request can take several minutes to complete based on the number of UWIs.
By default, all tops are selected. To restrict the selection list, click the None button, and then select the tops of interest:
11
For consecutive selection, hold the Shift key For non-consecutive selection, hold the Control key The Apply Translations button allows you to display the translated top name as established in the Formation Substitution file on the next tab. Fm Subst Tab This screen provides a mechanism to change the names of IHS tops on import, using a name substitution file. A formation substitution file can be used to map several formation top names into a common name. The file has two record types: The 1 record defines the common name loaded into the database The 2 record contains the IHS top name to be renamed to the common name The file format is displayed on the screen. Click the Browse button and path to the file location. Use the Test Translations button to verify that the file works correctly.
12
Source Tab This screen allows selection of IHS formation top source codes as well as a user supplied code.
This field is used to set the source code for perfs and any zone items created during import.
Formation Tops Source Code to Load
The list provides a method to restrict by source, which IHS tops are imported. Uncheck any source you do not want to import. Higher numbers (3, 4) provide more reliable top picks. 1 = Drillers Pick 2 = Picked from rock sample 3 = Operators Log Top 4 = IHS modified pick
13
Elev Trans Tab An Elevation Translation file can be used to map several elevation codes to one of the standard elevation zone items. The file record has two record types: The 1 record defines the standard name to load to the database The 2 record contains the IHS elevation code that is to be renamed to the standard name: KB, DF, GR, and SEIS The file format is displayed on the screen.
Enable the option and use the Browse button to path to the file; an example is shown above.
14
Dir Survey Tab This screen controls the selection of the survey type into which directional surveys import. The default is Actual. The Survey Def Maintenance button allows you to create new survey names for import.
Queries
The Queries button allows you to select wells from a saved Enerdeq query list. Click on the Refresh Query List from Enerdeq button to view your saved queries. Select a Well data query and then click the Run Selected Query to Create UWI listbutton.
15
297 Tab
This screen allows you to create a 297 file from the chosen options.
Report Tab
This screen displays a real time visual of the well data import. Example shows Report before importing wells; note blue background.
16
NOTE: Before exiting the Well Data Loader, you can save your settings and AOI by selecting File>Save Options As and File>Save AOI File and load these for future use.
17
View the well import in the Petra Main module. (The number of wells imported is less than the number to import since the option to Skip IC Numbers was selected.)
NOTE: If this is the first time accessing Direct Connect, the prompt for User ID and Password displays, as shown in previous section, before the Loader screen opens.
The IHS (US) Well Loader screen displays with additional Well selection options from those in the previous section.
18
You can use this option to redefine your current AOI. (See previous section).
B: Make AOI and UWI List from Currently Selected Wells
This option uses the wells currently selected in the Main module to create a new AOI and UWI List.
C: Make UWI List from Currently Selected Wells
Use the currently selected wells in the Main module without modifying the current AOI.
D: Search IHS Server for All Wells within Current AOI Limits
You can use this option to search for all wells in current AOI, and limit the search to those changed since a specific date. (See example below).
E: Use Previous UWI List
19
Option D: Search IHS Server This example uses the well list downloaded in the previous section (for a new project) to search for any wells within the AOI added or modified since the last change date. There are several options available for restricting the selection of last change date, such as in the last 2 weeks, or last 30 days; use the dropdown list for selection. The example below uses the option Since My Last Download. Petra saves the previous download date and uses that to fill in the Last Change Date.
The new UWI list displays showing 58 wells added or modified since the last download.
20
Import Options
The import options are selected as described in the previous section, with the exception of the Well Update Mode. In this case be sure to specify Add New Wells and select the appropriate Update Wells option.
Set the import options or load your saved options file and then click the Import Wells button.
21
The project now reflects 10,180 wells in the project; 1 well added and 57 updated.
22
23
NOTE: If this is your first time using the Direct Connect feature, you will be prompted for your username and password. See Well Data section for more information. The IHS (US) Prod Loader initial screen displays. Choose a well selection option to determine the UWI list used for importing production data. An option to restrict by a date when updating production is also available.
In general, use option 1 or 2 for your initial production import, since they use all or most wells in your project. The last choice, Ill Decide Later, gives you a chance to think about which wells to select before you actually import the data. Select the Source menu to reactivate this screen.
24
The optional date restriction for updates provides the same choices as in the Well Data Loader and works the same way. This example uses the 10180 wells selected in Main. Clicking the OK button generates an immediate Enerdeq request for a list of production IDs (PID) for the wells in the UWI list, unless you choose the option Ill Decide Later. CAUTION: This request can take several minutes to complete. You will NOT be able to cancel this request!
The Status screen displays the results of the PID search: of the 13,079 production IDs selected, 10,773 will be used in this Texas Allocated import. This is the sum of Allocated PIDs (Oil) and Well PIDs (Gas). The Unallocated (Lease) PIDs are not used. At this point you proceed to the General tab and begin selecting parameters for import.
25
General Tab This screen provides selection options for production streams and type.
Production Streams
This section provides choices for which streams are loaded; both options can be selected. Load Production into Standard Streams (OIL, GAS, WTR, and DAYSON) Check this option when you want to load data into streams called OIL, GAS, WTR, and DAYSON. The cumulative values are stored in the WELL Zone as CUMOIL, CUMGAS, and CUMWTR. Multiple producing formations are summed together. Load Production into Individual Formation Names Check this option to load data into separate streams by producing formation name. The formation names are selected on the Formations tab. A stream code, such as O, G, W, is appended to the formation name as a prefix or suffix to form the production stream and zone item cumulative (total) names.
26
For projects with wells in Texas and/or Louisiana, you have to choose which production type to load for those wells: Unallocated Only reported as is at well or lease level Allocated Only assigned to Well level via IHS allocation process
Production Stored As
This option provides selections for storing production as streams, CUMS, or both. Choices are: Load Monthly Production Streams and CUM Values Load Monthly Production Streams Only Load CUM Values Only
Method to Apply Unallocated Lease Production to Individual Wells
This option is important when loading unallocated production from leases with multiple wells. It determines how the lease production is applied to each well in the lease. Load Production into First Well Only Listed in Lease stores all lease production in the first well on the lease; the remaining lease wells receive no production. Load Production into Each Well in Lease (Subdivide) - total lease production is subdivided equally among all wells in the lease (i.e., 6 wells in lease, each receives 1/6th of total production). Load Production into Each Well in Lease (Store Total) All wells in the lease receive the total lease production. May result in inflated production! NOTE: This option is ignored when importing Allocated Only production.
This section displays the results of the PID query, as shown on the Status screen.
Fluid Types (Streams) to Load
This section determines which Standard streams are loaded, and which fluid types are loaded for individual producing formations. Only the fluid types selected are loaded; uncheck all but OIL, if you only want oil data loaded. Options: OIL DAYS ON GAS WELLS ON WATER Injection Data
27
Options Tab This screen provides a variety of import options, as well as another chance to restrict the import to a particular timeframe, if you did not choose this option on the initial screen.
Only Import Production Streams that have been Updated on IHS Server
This option is a repeat of that displayed on the initial screen; you can select the update method here, if not chosen previously. Recall that PETRA saves the last import date in memory and uses that when you select an option such as In the Last 2 Weeks. Use the Get Counts button to check how many production IDs (PID) would be downloaded.
MISC OPTIONS
This section provides various options for import. Check those of interest to you. Load Production into INITIAL COMPLETION Wells Only Select this option when you want to load production into 0000 wells only, for all wells in the project. This restriction is accomplished by matching 10 or 12 digits of the API number, as selected at the bottom of the screen.
28
Use INITIAL COMPLETIONS Only from Multi-Well Leases Select this option when you want to load production into 0000 wells for only those leases which contain multiple wells. This restriction is accomplished by matching 10 or 12 digits of the API number, as selected at the bottom of the screen. Update OPERATOR and Save Current Operator as Historical Operator This option assumes the production data Operator Name is the current operator for the well. When checked, the existing operator name in your PETRA project is copied into the blank Historical Operator field and replaced with the operator name from this import. Update Well SYMBOL CODE from Primary Product Code Select this option when you want to change the existing symbol code in your PETRA project to the updated symbol based upon current production status. Load Producing Fm Name into Well Header This option updates the Producing Formation Name field in the Well Header with the value from the production data import. Store current STATUS in WELL Zone as PDSTATUS This option stores the well status (Active or Inactive) in the WELL Zone as an item called PDSTATUS. Store GATHERER in WELL Zone as GATHERER This option stores the gas gatherer in the WELL Zone as an item called GATHERER. Store Production Tests in PdTest Table This option stores all production tests in the PdTest tables in the database and displays under the IP Tests tab. Display Detail Info in Report This option creates a detailed report of all monthly production values, which can be saved in your projects REPORTS folder. Update Non-Blank Lease Number with UNIT WELL SERIAL NUMBER This option replaces the non-blank Lease Number with the value of the Unit Well Serial Number, if it exists. In some states this is a Permit number. If Unit Well Serial Number is blank, it will replace the Lease Number with a null field. Do not use A in prefix/suffix to designate Allocated Production When loading Allocated Production, this option removes the default A prefix/suffix stream code appended to the producing formation name on Totals and Formation tabs.
Use Digits for Matching Initial Well Completions
This option is used only in conjunction with the miscellaneous options for loading initial well completions. It sets the API number of digits used to match with wells in your project.
29
Totals Tab This screen controls where the Cumulative values for each producing formation stream are stored, and how they are named.
Choose the Zone in which to store the Producing Formation totals, or use the New button to create a new name. TIP: For best results, always create a new Zone for storing these data rather than placing in the WELL zone. It streamlines data management and project refresh rates.
Zone Items
This section contains a list of the Zone items and associated names. The first 4 items store the cumulative values for Oil, Gas, Water, and Days. When loading production by producing formation names, each stream has a production code appended to the name as either a prefix or suffix, as selected on the Formations tab. The code relates to the stream and type of production loaded. In this case: AO = Allocated Oil
30
AD = Allocated Days
June 30, 2011
The next 3 items store additional miscellaneous information: Lease Name: stores the text of the Lease Name in the item PRDLSNAME Lease Well Count: stores the number of wells in the multi-well lease for the current producing stream; relates to how the production data for the lease are subdivided. Prod ID: stores the IHS production entity ID or PID text string. Formations Tab This tab is active whenever you select the option to Load Production into Individual Formation Names on the General tab. It provides a listing of each producing formation name and a count of the number of wells with that name.
Buttons
The All and None buttons allow you to either select all, or clear, the formation list. You can also select specific names using either the Shift or Control keys. Refresh with Translations button uses the translation operation selected on the Fm Subst tab. Export Fm List button creates a file containing the information listed in the formation list box.
31
FM Name From
This option allows selection of the format for the producing formation name. Fm Name Code: uses the IHS alphanumeric age and formation code, such as 403BCGM or 354BRNT Fm Name Desc: uses a descriptive code such as BEND CONGL or BARNETT/SH/ Fm Name Code (Age Only): uses the IHS age code only, such as 403 or 354 Reservoir Name: uses the reservoir name, such as BEND CONGLOMERATE GAS or BARNETT SHALE
Prod Stream Name Qualifier
This option allows you to select the application of the stream code as a Prefix or Suffix. Examples are AO_403BCGM for the prefix option and 403BCGM_AO for the suffix option. CAUTION: Be consistent with selection of the Fm Name and stream qualifier formats. Changing these formats for subsequent updates can result in duplication of production, since producing names are unique to each import. For best results, you can save your import settings and reuse them for updates; see later section for more information. PdCum Tab This screen provides options for storing production cum values in the Prod Cums table of your project. Cumulative values are computed by summing the monthly production streams.
This option controls how data are stored in the Prod Cums table. DO NOT STORE in PdCum DB: no data are stored STORE PdCum Data using ProdID as FmName: stores PdCum data, but also stores the PID in the FmName field and the producing formation name in the Altname field. This results in 1 Prod Cum entry for each PID.
32
STORE PdCum Data using ProdID as Altname: stores PdCum data, but also stores the PID in the Altname field and the producing formation name in the FmName field. This results in 1 Prod Cum entry for each PID. STORE PdCum Data using FmName Only: stores PdCum data, but only the producing formation name is stored in the FmName field; Altname field is blank. Multiple entities for the same producing formation are summed.
PdCum Name Qualifier
This option allows you to add a qualifier to the producing formation name stored in the Prod Cums table, as either a prefix or suffix. Leases Tab This screen controls which leases are used for the production import. The default is all leases. Use the None button to clear the list. Use Shift or Control to select specific leases. The list displays the lease name along with the well count for that lease.
33
P/Z Tab This screen provides options for capturing the P/Z (compressibility) data streams for gas wells.
Selecting this option activates the import options for loading this data.
Load P/Z Decline Data Into
This section contains the names for the P/Z data streams. P/Z: creates a stream called PZ for the P over Z pressure Gas Cum: creates a stream called PZGASCUM for the Gas volume from test BHP: creates a stream called PZBHP for the Bottom Hole pressure
34
Fm Subst Tab This screen provides a mechanism to change the names of the IHS formations using a name substitution file. This files format follows the same rules as those described in the Well section.
The formation substitution file can be used to load several producing formation names into a single entry in the project database. An example of the file format is shown above. Browse to the file location so that the complete path appears in the field. Use the Test Your Translations button to verify the file works correctly. This file must be selected to use the Refresh with Translations button on the Formations tab. Query Tab This screen allows you to select a query from a list of your saved Enerdeq queries. You cannot create any queries from this screen. Click on the Retreive IHS Enerdeq Queries button to view your saved queries. Select the query and click the Run Query button to use the query for well selection.
35
Save Settings Its a good idea to save your settings and load them when updating production. This ensures no duplication of production by selecting different formation name formats or stream qualifiers. Select File>Save Settings. Type a name thats meaningful, such as Production Import Settings. When updating production, select File>Load Settings; this restores current selections. Status Tab Click the Import Production button, click the OK button, and view the import progress on this screen.
36
The system processes a batch of PIDs at a time until all production is imported. The time required for import depends upon the number of wells and producing formations selected.
The completed import shows that production data imported for 7,700 wells, with total import time about 32 minutes. Save settings and close the IHS (US) Prod Loader screen. View the results in your project. The examples below show results for WSN 18 (UWI = 42497000160000).
IHS Production Zone: Individual stream totals with A prefix
37
WELL Zone: Cumulative values for Oil, Gas, Water from all producing formation streams
38
Choose the appropriate well selection method for initial production import. In this case the wells in Main are selected.
Click the OK button. View the Status screen for PID results and proceed to the General tab.
39
Notice that the field is grayed out, since all the wells are in Colorado. This occurs for wells in any states except Texas and Louisiana. The NOTE indicates Unallocated Production as the default.
Method to Apply Lease Production to Individual Wells:
Recommend Load Production into Each Well in the Lease and subdivide production by number of wells in lease. This option stores an equal share of the total production among all wells in the lease.
Production available to Load:
The results show 105 PIDs with 25 at the Lease level and 80 at the Well level. This information can help you select the appropriate method for applying lease level production.

Totals Tab Select parameters as noted in previous section. Select or create new Zone for storing individual streams.
Zone Items
The item names are similar to those in the Allocated import, except the stream codes are O, G, W, and D in the Unallocated Production import. Remaining Tabs Select all remaining parameters as described in the previous section under Allocated production.
41
Save settings for future use and then click the Import Production button.
The completed import processed 98 wells with production data in about 14 seconds. A WSN list of updated wells was also created and stored for future use. Close the Production Loader and view the results in the project for WSN 42.
IHS Production Zone: Shows individual producing formations and Lease Well Count of 3. This
means the production values listed for this well are 1/3 of the total lease level production.
42
3. Click the OK button and view the PID results on the Status screen. Proceed to the General tab for parameter selection.
43
General Tab 1. For the Texas/Louisiana Production Type, select Allocated Only. The default of Unallocated applies to the Arkansas wells. (See Note on screen). 2. Select the Method to Apply Unallocated Lease Production for the Arkansas wells. The Subdivide Production among wells in the Lease is recommended. 3. Select other parameters as described in previous sections.
44
Options Tab Select the miscellaneous options of interest and skip the Change Date section since this is an initial production import, not an update. In this example the option Do not use A in prefix/suffix to designate Allocated production is selected. This selection simplifies the stream names and subsequent bubble mapping, by using consistent stream codes for all wells.
Remaining Tabs Select the parameters on the remaining tabs as previously described. Save your settings, if desired, and then click the Import Production button.
45
View the results on the Status screen, close the Loader, and view the results in your project. The results indicate that 631 PIDs were processed for 446 wells.

Best Practices
1. Be consistent with selection of producing formation names and stream qualifiers (prefix/suffix) on import updates to avoid duplication of production. Use the Save/Load Settings options. 2. Be consistent on the number of digits in your API numbers on import updates to ensure production is stored with the same well. Again, using the Save/Load Settings options will help for imports in which the Initial Completions only, and number of digits used to match the API number, options were selected. 3. Create a Zone dedicated to storing individual producing formation CUMs and related data. This action improves data management and project performance by not overloading the Well zone. 4. Create a WSN list of all wells with monthly production to streamline viewing and analyzing production data.
48
49
The availability of this option is determined by which data are available. Currently, allocated data are only available in Texas and Louisiana. The options include: Unallocated Only available for all states Allocated Only available for Texas and Louisiana ONLY
50
Sum of Allocated and Unallocated this option applied to Texas and Louisiana, but is no longer necessary, as Texas Gas is reported at the Well level and imports via the Allocated option; Oil and Gas are both allocated in Louisiana
Method to Apply Lease Production to Individual Wells
This option is important when loading unallocated production from leases with multiple wells. It determines how the lease production is applied to each well in the lease. NOTE: The NAME of this option changed in the current version. It always applied to Unallocated Production only, and is ignored when importing Allocated Production.
Options Tab This screen provides a variety of import options, as well as another chance to restrict the import to a particular timeframe, if you did not choose this option on the initial screen.
Fewer options available! The remaining tabs have no significant changes from current version.
51
Notice that the field is grayed out Unallocated Only is the only option available, since the wells are in Colorado. This occurs for wells in any states except Texas and Louisiana.
52
53
4. View the PID results on the Status screen. In this example there are 938 total PIDs; 513 allocated, 307 unallocated, and 118 well. Therefore, 631 PIDs will be imported: allocated + well.
5. On the General tab, for Production Type Loaded, select Allocated Only. Choose other options as applicable. Recall that the Method to Apply Lease Production is ignored when importing Allocated Production.
54
6. On the Options tab, select the miscellaneous options of interest and skip the Change Date section since this is an initial production import, not an update. 7. On the Totals tab, select the zone for storing the individual producing formation stream cumulative values and the items to store. In this example the data are stored in the IHS Production zone. The streams use the AO, AG, AW, etc. codes to indicate allocated production in your database.
8. On the PdCum tab, select STORE PdCum Data using ProdID as Altname and use A as the PdCum Name qualifier. This helps in identifying which PIDs relate to the allocated production import. (The qualifier is optional).
9. Make your selections on the remaining tabs. Save settings, if desired, and then click the Import Production button.

Second Import Once the first import is complete, you launch the importer for the second import, in this example Unallocated Production. 1. Select the WSN list for the Unallocated Production import. In this example the list contains 307 wells from Arkansas. 2. Launch the IHS Production Loader as in step 2 of previous section and select the wells for import. In this example, the 307 wells are already selected in Main, so thats the option selected. 3. View the PID search results on the Status screen. In this example there are only 54 total PIDs: 0 allocated, 52 unallocated, and 2 well.

4. On the General tab, select the Method to Apply Lease Production, in this case the Subdivide option, and all other parameters of interest. Production Type Loaded (Unallocated) is grayed out, as there is no other option.
58
5. On the Totals tab select the zone for storing the totals, in this case IHS PRODUCTION. Notice that the stream codes are O, G, W, etc. This differentiates these producing formation streams from the allocated streams.
6. Make selections on the remaining tabs as previously described. Save the unallocated settings, if desired. Click the Import Production button, view the results on the Status screen, and then close the Production Loader.

Once both production imports are complete, you might want to create another WSN list of all wells with monthly production, to streamline viewing and analyzing production data.
