Position Titles: Technology Sector Business Development Representative and Technology Sector Business Associate Organization: Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development, Government of the District of Columbia Supervisor: Business Development Sector Director Salary: Commensurate with Experience The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) is charged with executing the Mayor's economic development strategy which encourages growth and investments across the District. DMPED is responsible for managing catalytic real estate projects and promoting business expansion within the city. The team led by the Director of Business Development and Strategy oversees DMPED efforts to attract, retain, and grow businesses throughout the District. The Business Development team focuses on expanding targeted sectors such as technology, health care, higher education, and federal contracting. The team also manages implementation of the Mayors 5-Year Economic Development Strategy and directs efforts to attract international investment and increase exports. To accomplish its goals the business development team works closely with the Workforce Investment Council and Department of Employment Services to ensure District residents have access to new job opportunities. The technology sector is at the forefront of the District of Columbias economic development efforts. The growth of DCs tech sector is one of 6 pillars in the recently released 5 Year Economic Development Strategy and has garnered much local media attention. The sector currently boasts over 22,000 jobs and more than 2,000 companies. It is targeted to double in size within 5 years. More information is available on the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development website at www.dmped.dc.gov Position Description: The Technology Sector Business Development Representative and Technology Sector Business Associate are responsible for relationship management, tracking data related to the technology business and investment, and encouraging the expansion of the technology sector in the District. This information is used in business attraction, retention, and expansion efforts, and development of targeted marketing materials. The candidates will participate in meetings with prospective tenants, real estate brokers, business associations, and non-profit organizations. In addition, the Technology Sector Business Development Representative will make policy recommendations to support job growth within DC-based technology companies. Upcoming large-scale projects relevant to these positions include project management for a

program to connect startups to corporate purchasers; a national marketing campaign for DC Tech; coordination of a tech transfer program for local universities; and project management for programs to connect DC youth to positions within technology firms. Specific responsibilities include: Maintain up-to-date database of business prospects and company interactions. Research and recommend tech-related economic development policies. Track and analyze trends related to investment, business subsector growth and tech firm talent acquisition. Identify grants and other funding opportunities to support innovative business development. Identify strategic business prospects, meet with their leadership, and market DC as a superior place to do business. Provide project management support on technology initiatives within the 5 Year Economic Development Strategy. Manage relationships with technology company service providers, industry organizations, and community leaders. Coordinate and support special events to recognize industry leaders. Experience/Qualification Requirements: Technology Sector Business Development Representative o Undergraduate degree required, graduate degree a plus (especially Technology Policy or Urban Planning) o 4-6 years work experience in relevant business, including technology policy, economic development, and technology business development. Technology Sector Business Associate o Undergraduate degree required, graduate degree a plus (especially Technology Policy or Urban Planning) o 2-3 years work experience in relevant business, including technology policy, economic development, and technology business development, and urban planning. The ideal candidate will demonstrate: Presentation and public speaking experience; advocacy and promotion. Understanding of local economic development tools. Familiarity with technology policy, equity investment, and workforce development principles. Understanding of commercial real estate development and leasing transactions. Quantitative analytical and market research skills, especially investment, leasing and workforce data gathering, analysis, and reporting. Genuine interest and experience in entrepreneurship and job creation. Experience working with relevant District agencies. Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks in fast paced environment. Positive attitude; problem-solver. Ability to take initiative and set and meet independent goals. Ability to communicate and build partnerships with different constituencies. Excellent organizational skills. Ability to market a product successfully. Ability to converse with business leaders at all levels.

Understanding of the key business concerns of tech companies from the startup phase through acquisition, IPO, or sustainability. An existing network of entrepreneurs, technology companies, startup service providers, venture capital firms, and entrepreneurship advocates.
