Agenda

A BRIEF ON THE ORGANIZATION

NEXTGEN YOUTHWORLD INTERNATIONAL is a youth development and mentoring non-profit making organization which seeks to prepare young people to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood through a coordinated, progressive series of activities and

experiences which will help the youth to become socially, morally, emotionally, physically and cognitively competent. Thus, they will be enabled to: 1. Find their places in the world 2. Find opportunities to try new things, meet new people and face new situations so as to learn. 3. Develop into useful members of the society. 4. Find support, guidance and mentorship which their parents alone may not offer. 5. Socialize and find appropriate fun. We lay emphasize on the importance of vocational and life skills; the development of positive personal characteristics, latent talent and key competencies through our knowledge-laden, but highly interactive seminars and talk shows. Research shows that all young people have basic needs that are crucial to survival and healthy development which families and schools alone cannot provide for. These needs include a sense of safety and structure; belonging and membership; self-worth and an ability to contribute; independence and control over ones life; closeness and several good relationships not limited to the family only and competence and mastery. Furthermore, to succeed as adults, all youths must acquire positive attitudes and appropriate behaviours and skills in five areas of health; personal/social; knowledge; reasoning and creativity; vocation and citizenship. The above informs the non-academic activities and programmes which we run in schools (Senior Secondary and Tertiary) and communities. With the permit from the Ministry of Education, over 20 schools, 3 tertiary institutions and 3 communities have hosted our activities. Our experience makes us believe there is the need to scale up these activities.

THE NEED

A combination of factors has exposed the youths to an unusually high level of challenges and risks. This is aptly captured by Dr. Thoraya Obaid a former head of United Nations Population Fund when she noted that: The biggest young generation in history faces unprecedented dangers from AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, early marriage and pregnancy, broken homes, drug use, violence and sex slavery. Nigerian youths are not spared these dangers considering the high level of unemployment and poverty. These have led to kidnapping robbery, militancy, cultism, risky travels through the deserts

and seas in search of elusive greener pastures abroad and prostitution. HIV/AIDS has orphaned many young people who themselves are also highly exposed to the virus due to risky sexual escapades. Rural youths are worse off in this regard. Many young people do not have well enlightened parents who can give them counsel, guidance and enlightenment that are relevant in this century. The loneliness, anxiety, depression, unhealthy selfesteem etc, which the youths face often lead to suicidal thoughts/tendencies and drug abuse which have filled our streets with mentally deranged youths. There is therefore the need for programmes and activities that could bring about behavioural and attitudinal changes among young people. Youths also need to be empowerment to be self-reliant.

PROGRAMME DESCRIPTION Youth and Community Development through Mobilization, Empowerment, Enlightenment and Training (YCD-MEET) is a special initiative of NEXTGEN YOUTHWORLD

INTERNATIONAL which provides special fora for youths to be enlightened, trained and empowered to lead life of focus and responsibility. It ultimately enlists them into our special mentoring and sponsorship programme which will see them pursue careers after education, skills acquisition and talent development. Special focus will be on HIV/AIDS which is ravaging youths and women often them knowing it. Activities The programme will involve the following activities:

1. Seminars/Talks Shows 2. Educative Film Shows 3. Interactive and Q & A Sessions 4. Skills Practical Sessions 5. Sports 6. Drama /Dance 7. Community development activities such as sweeping the market 8. Individual counseling to solve personal problems/challenges.

It will be rounded off with a day or night of variety featuring dance, drama and special skills exhibition. Areas of Focus The following areas will provide the fulcrum on which the programme will run: 1. Moral Development: This will emphasize the disadvantages of engaging in pre-marital sex, abortion, cultism, drug abuse and the other antisocial bahaviours. Young people will be helped to handle the challenges they face at the stage of their lives such as emotional issues, disorders, family problems etc. 2. Entrepreneurial and Vocational Development: The emphasis here will be to discourage young people from depending on formal/paid employment. They will be encouraged to develop and leverage on their talents and passion and acquire vocational skills, which may not necessarily be in tandem with whatever course of study they are studying or intend to study in tertiary institutions. These skills will come handy in times of employment or job loss. There is no doubt that many Nigerian youths have excelled and been made rich through developed talents and skills such as sports, music, acting/drama, dancing, fashion and modeling among others. 3. Educational Development: Young people will be encouraged to pursue formal

education and give it their best, if they have all it takes. Furthermore, they will be taught ways of acquiring the much-desired formal qualifications through institutions that are not the conventional tertiary institutions such as: National Open University

Professional Programmes/Bodies Vocational, Innovative and Enterprises Institutions Part time Programmes.

4. Health: Talks will be given to both the old and young on steps to good health. NEXTGEN will seek to collaborate with qualified persons and bodies who can provide health services and support such as medical examinations, drug dispensation and counseling. Areas of interest include Cancer, Diabetes, and STDs among others.
